APB Beta Test Starts Next Week

From gamesindustry.biz:

Realtime Worlds CEO Gary Dale has confirmed that the beta for APB will go live next week.

The exec dated the beta during the Tech Media Invest conference taking place at the Emirates Stadium in London.

The studio began taking applications for the beta last month, with the developer promising to increase the number of participants as the process evolves until launch.

The company has raised over USD 70 million for the development of APB and other projects, with expectations high for the title after the success of Xbox 360 exclusive Crackdown.

The disc-based version of the game will be released by Electronic Arts.

I signed up for Beta a few weeks ago, and they DID ask for a lot of information. However, I'm really excited for this, I'm hoping it's as good as it looks like it will be. Can't make up mymind yet if I want to be a "good" guy or a "bad" guy.

Certain fansites got priority invitations, so odds are none of us will get in for a while yet.

I'm ok with that. I used to write for a gamers blog and had more beta invitations than I knew what to do with, most of which I had absolutely no interest in playing

The betas I did enjoy, however, also burned me out on the game before it went live. I lasted about 3 or 4 months in each of 'em before cancelling my live subscription. I blame being in beta.

So if I don't get into APB beta, I'm not going to fret much. I'll be buying it after release and feel like the whole game is like a mystery Christmas present

Soooooo....What is APB, and why should I be excited about it? I'm getting it's an MMO, but is there something groundbreaking that's not being discussed here?

It's kind of a GTA/Saints Row MMO with some tweaks and an amazing character creator interface. You can play as law enforcement or crime syndicate!

APB All Points Bulletin MMO Game

APB is, apparrently, a sort of freeform, multiplayer version of "Grand Theft Auto". The game recently become known to Second Life players because the game's "avatar" mesh and customization options are far nicer than those offered by the 2002 era Second Life character building interface.

Little things, like you know.. toes.

Anyways, the trailer for the game is out there.. and it seems that you can choose how you'll play, and whether you're going to be a vigilante or a criminal or what.

EA describes it as a "persistent online multiplayer game" whatever that means. I guess it means "it's still running even if you're not online"

Mmmmmm, sounds interesting...I will admit to playing GTA: Vice City fer awhile. I'm a terrible driver, tho...which I think makes the game more fun.

Course, I'm more on the social and casual ends of the gaming spectrum...How much of this will be accomplishable by one player (or a couple of freinds), and how much of this will be huge raids of druglord compounds and police precincts? And how annoying will the PvP be?

I realize I could just Google APB and be done with it...but it's more fun reading others posts and riffs on the game.

EDIT: Oh, and it looks like my questions might be answered by the videos, but I'm not in a position to watch them, ATM. Sowwy.
