iRacing

Started my month free trial on this "game" yesterday. It really is something to behold. Tracks accurate to the real world counterparts to the millimeter.. including track side objects trees, buildings and details down to patches of resurfaced track, breakpoint markings on the road, bumps, potholes and camber on the tracks.

The correct scale of everything compared to other games like Rfactor and live for speed is instantly noticeable.

Cars drive beautifully too.. I'll let the PR blurb say it all:

Quote:
Thanks to the iRacing.com physics engine, that data comes alive. It is no longer just a graphical representation of a stockcar, formula car or sports car. It is now a complex set of interrelated, mechanical systems influencing a myriad of ever-changing forces to control physical consequences. It feels real because, mathematically, it is real.
check out this side by side:

er.. The Downside is it's 20 dollars a month and extra cars are $15 tracks $20. you Start out with some lovely tracks like Limerock, Laguna seca and Silverstone and 3 speedways for Oval racing in initially Legends Ford '34Coups, your first Race car is a Pontiac Solstice.. you get a SCCA Spec Racer Ford too for advanced Rookie racing. I find it a bucket of shite to drive personally, my favorites the Solstice.

A Race wheel is /required/ to play as is a CC and you use your real name.

The game launches through your web browser and the layout is slick and always fast.

Oh and I kinda suck so my safety rating is shot after a single sessions live practice

Hope I'm not the only internet race fanatic here

I'm not going to get too much into what iRacing (formerly known as FIRST) did to the add-on/modding community when they bought up Papyrus' code.

Anyone who was there knows.

If you guys think SL is whacked out when it comes to the way they treat their customer base, you should have seen what happened back in '05 to the NASCAR 2003 community.

The way John W. Henry (yes, Boston Redsox owner John W. Henry - still? Maybe...I don't know) and company fired off C&D orders to every corner of the modding community (legally modding with the tools provided by Papyrus I might add) and taking people to court left right and center would have made your head swim.

I thought anyone who went through it would never get sucked in by them but after doing some research -it appears that many of the sites damaged by legal threats and action are swooning over this release.

Oh well. Many have short memories I guess.

Personally, I will never have anything to do with them even if it was the greatest racing simulator in the history of racing simulators.

ETA - Congrats on the podium finish Richie!

I wasn't, thankfully around for all that stuff. It certainly would have shaded my opinions of the project some.

I think those that forgave must have actually tried iRacing though, it really is the best racing sim money (lots of it) can buy..

Are they still like this about the NASCAR mods?

I'm not sure. Last I heard they couldn't acquire a NASCAR license because EA holds (or held) it. What they did try to do (and successfully as far as I know) was kill any and all updated tracks, signage, physics, and two separate, highly anticipated, NASCAR Modifieds mods.

Thousands and thousands of hours of work by countless people all brought to a screeching halt by shady legal maneuvers.

This debacle spurred several big modders and devs to create their own racing sim which, in it's early stages made iRacing/First's efforts look bush league. It was quite promising and was full mod - physics, 3D, everything - allowing for any kind of 4 wheel racing you could imagine. The name escapes me right now but I put in my $29 US to help support the project and contributed some small bits of work to it but the project was slow developing and I moved on.

I wonder what ever happened to it. I'll try to remember the name.

I just did a quick Google. It looks like the NR2003 community is still alive and the Whelan Modifieds mod is out there.

Maybe some time after I left iRacing backed off or a deal was struck after I left but community is a shadow of it's former self.

Still trying to figure out the name of the other sim.

Some pretty exciting news from the Iracing, espesially for fans of the NASCAR series:

Quote:
NASCAR and iRacing to Partner in Online Racing Series: Official NASCAR Series to Begin at iRacing.com in 2010

CONCORD, NC (May 16, 2009) - NASCAR and iRacing.com Motorsport Simulations announced today that the two organizations are joining forces to create a NASCAR-sanctioned online racing series, a new competition division that will be licensed by NASCAR and organized and hosted by iRacing. Beginning early in 2010, NASCAR fans anywhere in the world will be able to log onto the internet and compete against one another, as well as a number of NASCAR drivers, in an official NASCAR series featuring digital duplicates of real-world NASCAR cars and tracks in the most realistic NASCAR racing environment ever created.

"The online world is an ever growing marketplace filled with NASCAR fans. To provide those fans with the most realistic NASCAR racing environment, iRacing was the right partner for us," said Blake Davidson, NASCAR managing director of licensed products. "Bill France, Jr. had the original vision for this series more than ten years ago. He foresaw a day when NASCAR fans could experience NASCAR's side-by-side racing from the comfort of their own homes; that day has come. The iRacing product is so realistic, that a number of our NASCAR drivers, including Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Brad Keselowski, A.J. Allmendinger, Marcos Ambrose and Colin Braun are already iRacing members, which makes it even better. From the beginning, these drivers have raved about the incredible accuracy of the cars and the tracks that iRacing has produced and their involvement, along with NASCAR Competition, in the development will make the experience even more authentic."

More than 12,000 members have signed up for iRacing's online racing service since it was opened to the public in August, 2008. iRacing uses laser-scanning and other advanced technology to produce tracks that are millimeter-accurate duplicates of their real-world counterparts and race cars of similar visual and mechanical fidelity. The inventory of vehicles currently available to iRacing members features racing cars from Chevrolet, one of NASCAR's automotive partners, including the Silverado, as raced in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, and versions of the Impala SS as raced both in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. iRacing has either completed or is in the process of building virtually every track on the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule.

"Our members are passionate about racing," said John Henry, iRacing's co-founder and chairman. "They love to drive, and they love to compete. And they do it in the context of their overall love for racing in both the physical and virtual worlds. We're pleased that iRacing has been chosen as the home of NASCAR-Sanctioned Online Racing and expect that many of NASCAR's most avid fans will find iRacing's NASCAR-sanctioned series a great way to deepen their connection to and enjoyment of the sport."

Henry noted that iRacing's online racing is available to anyone with a current PC, a broadband internet connection and an inexpensive PC-compatible steering wheel and pedal set (available from most consumer-electronics retailers) Subscriptions to iRacing's online service, which permit virtually unlimited racing, are $19.00 per month, with annual subscriptions available for just $13.00 per month.

"This is one form of racing that is affordable to the average racing fan," Henry said. "We provide our members with the opportunity to develop the same driving skills they see their favorite NASCAR stars using every weekend, for a fraction the cost of their monthly phone bill."

It's up at the end of this year and there isn't going to be a NASCAR '10.

yea, the games a little light on non american content, you get Silverstone but its lack of elevation changes bores the Christ out of me..

As far as I know they are coming to europe this year to scan more tracks... I'd be very surprised if they missed Brands Hatch...

I personally am holding out for Zandvoort, Cadwell park and the Nurburgring.. a few European race cars wouldn't hurt either.

Bump this with some news from the front lines, Lotus 79 has been added to the inventory of cars, with the VW jetta TDI being released soon where if you're between 18 and 25 you can actually win a seat in the Real world series. The Corvette C6.R will also be added... beast, I cant wait

quite a quick car :yikes:

Chicagoland speedway has also been added and two great British tracks announced for 2010, Brands Hatch (sweet) and Oulton Park. Circuit Park Zandvoort too!
