I understand the disappointment with poor performance on some hardware but if you have the 360 version why do you even bother getting the PC one? The game should be old hat to you by now.
The most impressive thing to me is how seamlessly the euphoria engine blends with Havok... that's platform non exclusive

I would rather spend $200 to upgrade my video card than spend $400 on a crippled computer loaded with DRM (what they call a "console" these days).

I had it playing in 1080i on a 32" HDTV and no frame rate issues. I got it decent on the PC version but the shadows looks odd and the draw distance had to be put down almost to bottom levels.

Consoles don't have DRM you just have to have the disk in the drive and that is it. Which is what they use to do with the PC.

Put out a good polished, tested and true product and it wont matter what season it is, word will spread and it will sell. These companies really need to stop kicking thier asses with thier own deadlines. Im so dissapointed. I had to sell my 360 a while back because of hard times so i was looking forward to this title so badly. Oh well, now that were all caught up and doing well I may have to go buy another 360
I've watched several dev teams do this. A few come to mind immediately.

Maxis - The Sims Online

Blizzard - WoW

EA - Motor City Online

Consoles have DRM. However unlike PCs they only use one type of DRM and that is the same for all games. So it doesn't cause any real problems like on PCs.

If consoles didn't have DRM, you wouldn't need modchips to play pirated games.

With the norestrictions thing, I did get it running at some odd resolution at a decent rate, but I am sure it is melting my video card or something. As far as the 1080i thing, I have a 1080p tv and run the XBOX in that resolution, but the native resolution for GTA IV is 720p. Most XBOX 360 titles are 720p. Here is the list of games that natively support 1080p:

I was able to get the game running OK but the texture details are stuck on low and the draw distance is down to 1. Even then there were occasional slowdowns on the screen. I guess this will get me to finally upgrade my computer since the one I have hasn't been really upgraded in about 2 years. I was able to find a quad core 2.66 GHz for just under $300 with free shipping from Newegg.com and around the first of the year I should be able to get the motherboard for it.

Ok, so my guy's birthday is coming up (on Sunday) and he said he'd like GTA4 as a little gifty. I told him the PC version has come under scrutiny, so we looked up some reviews. Most are saying what you guys said, that the graphics requirements are ridiculous for its having run perfectly on an xbox.

Well, he doesn't have an Xbox, doesn't want an Xbox, and has never played it on the Xbox. His computer has the recommended requirements listed on the wiki, not just the required. 512 video memory, quad core, more than 2 gigs of memory etc. Would you recommend the game for him then?

I've heard of some people with quad cores having texture problems. It might be better for him to get it for a Christmas present. Maybe by then Rockstar can figure something out.

P.S. Then again I just read that a patch will come out in the next few days. Not sure if it will fix all of the problems but at least its a start. At least a few of the complaints will hopefully be fixed.

• A fix to the crash after legal screen that some German customers were reporting.
• Numerous improvements to the video editor: Smarter naming of videos, improved rendering quality, better fx during replays
• Fix to bowling while using certain sensitive mice
• Fix for ATI 1900 shadows
• Overall savings to memory
• Graphic improvements to particle systems and mirrors
• Multiplayer character settings are preserved
• Support for DirectInput controllers. Note: The current hack way of supporting these controllers may not work with the improved functionality. So we recommend you remove the hack before upgrading to the patch.

Microsoft has to approve it first though since its going through Games for Windows Live.

with some messing with I got it running perfect on my PC... and I will say this, it is smoother than the 360 version.. no jaggys.

but my PC was pretty expensive and bought for gaming.. the requirements are ridiculous. and it took me the better part of the day to tweak it...

As did I and still had no jaggies and the same for Cris I believe. Maybe it was just your Xbox 360 that was the problem.

It doesn't look as smooth as it does on my monitor.. and I wont even get into the difference a mouse and keyboard makes to the game..

Driving with a keyboard sucks. The rest might be true but it was a much better driving experience with an Xbox 360 controller but that's just me.

NVIDIA recommends to use the 180.84 beta drivers for GTA IV. It supposedly works much better with it.

Grand Theft Auto IV by Rockstar Games

P.S. I tried it and the only difference is I could sign into the Social Club and it didn't crash the game.

I use right mouse for accelerator and arrow keys left right, then z as handbrake, but z is mapped to my extra button on my mouse, the drivings great.. I got used to it pretty sharpish, even still I have an xbox controller down stairs if i couldn't.

trying the new drivers now.

Siyu, the (signed) plugins at these links will tell you whether it should run on his system.

YouGamers - Grand Theft Auto IV System Requirements
Can You RUN It?

(Obviously, you'll have to follow those links on his system. )

Mine meets minimum requirements, but doesn't quite hit the recommended on account of having a Geforce 7950GT, and dual-core CPU.

I'm gonna buy it anyway because I'll never get a console, and I've been meaning to upgrade the graphics card for ages. The quad core will come later if I really need it. I know that will be easy to install after upgrading my own system to a dual core earlier this year.
