Business: Sellin smiles out mah jansport
I think it all boils down to the christmas curse. These publishers and developers get so wrapped up in "we gotta get this out before christmas!" "gotta put this thing out for christmas sales!" that they lose sight of basic marketing and product development.

If you push out a pile of shit for the sake of beating christmas deadline, I'ts a pile of shit and word will travel fast. so yay for getting mediocre sales for the very very short christmas sales, and then flopping afterward. Put out a good polished, tested and true product and it wont matter what season it is, word will spread and it will sell. These companies really need to stop kicking thier asses with thier own deadlines. Im so dissapointed. I had to sell my 360 a while back because of hard times so i was looking forward to this title so badly. Oh well, now that were all caught up and doing well I may have to go buy another 360

Why are the system requirements so high?

What are the specs of the X-Box?

Hmm, /me Googles.

Higher resolutions and windows running concurrently adds to the overhead.

I wonder why games companies don't develop their own OS so their games can boot directly from a DVD.

I seem to recall a version of America's Army that booted from a Live Gentoo Linux CD. No Windows required at all.

So basically: Don't buy it now because it runs like shit.

Download it when you upgrade or buy a new computer in six months, because you'll be able to play it and the securom protection will be cracked by then too.

I'm sorry, I did try to warn you. Something is seriously flawed with that game, it's a disgrace that they released it and surprising from a company known for such high quality.

I hope other people will take heed - I'm not bashing on PC gaming here at all, which I love. I'm upset about a substandard product I just paid $50 and have no ability to even return it.

Sure, that's always a given, but in GTA4's case it's just plain shitty optimization.

Fallout 3 runs like a dream on PC hardware despite being multi-platform.

Also, apparently GTA4 won't use any gamepad except an Xbox360 controller. Considering how universal joystick support is, this really must have taken extra effort. Bullshit much?

I've never gone from "Ooh I can't wait I've always wanted this game I'm about to buy it whee!1" to "Oh shit nevermind!" so fast.

What's ironic is that GTA4 was the only game I was really looking forward to all year. I thought I wouldn't like Fallout 3... wound up loving it. I didn't really know much about L4D or had any desire for it, and instantly fell in love when I got the demo. Meanwhile, GTA4... sheesh.

My PC is OLD I built it back in the days to run Oblivion and NWN2 at max quality.

It runs Fallout 3 like a dream yeah.

I had GTA IV on my list of things to get. I still do, just pushed it back because I want the console version - and that's the first time I want a console version of a multi-platform game.

if you're feeling brave and want to force set your textures and stuff to high add "-nomemrestrict -norestrictions -novblank -texturequality 2 -percentvidmem 100" to the target line on your desktop shortcut!

Rockstar has put out an official statement about the problems that have been reported to them.

From Bigdownload.com:

On Wednesday we reported on our own issues with playing the PC port of Grand Theft Auto IV along with other concerns. Rockstar Games has now issued an official statement on these issues, as supplied by Voodoo Extreme:

We are aware that a small number of fans are having problems running GTA IV on their PC's and we would like to assure them we are working to help solve these as quickly as possible. We would ask anyone that is encountering difficulties to contact their local technical support helpline for advice and recommendations. These telephone numbers can be found in the game's manual.
There is also a regularly updated technical support page available on the Rockstar Games website where there are many useful faqs and information on how to resolve some common problems being encountered.

That official support web site has things like the official list of error codes (which oddly enough does not include the error code we and a number of other gamers have dealt with, MMA10) and on how you can improve your graphical settings (it states most gamers should go for medium settings saying, "Higher settings are provided for future generations of PCs with higher specifications than are currently widely available")

I hate it when game companies do that.

P.S. The last statement was mine.

The game runs fairly well on my rig (2.7GHz C2D, 3gig ram, 9800GT), I don't have an xblob to compare it to but it sure looks pretty. I get 33FPS average in the benchmark tool at 1920x1200 with settings on high. I'm sure the framerate will drop some during normal gameplay but that's the beauty of being used to SL. Anything above 15fps gets a "woo, smooth" reaction.

The important thing is though.. multiplayer runs smoother than single player!

I found out that shutting down the part where the game is recording video helps it out a little bit. I was able to get my resolution up to 1440x900 but I had to turn down the draw distance, vehicle density and shadows to almost the bottom levels to get it to do that. I still can't get it to look even close to what the Xbox 360 version looks like.

GTA4 (on my machine) looks way better than SL will EVER look. not to mention the vehicles. and you can beat up the hookers

I understand the disappointment with poor performance on some hardware but if you have the 360 version why do you even bother getting the PC one? The game should be old hat to you by now.

Usually you get a different experience from different platforms or they will have a different feel to it. Like I got the Wii version of The Force Unleashed through the rent service GameFly and it was more fun than the Xbox 360 version.

I've read that the game doesn't even have SLI support and there are sometimes texture problems. In one instance I read that all that was seen on the screen was the car and the road. In some cases Steam is even giving people their money back.
