If this forum is a cross section of the gamers who purchased "Spore", it's not an overwhelming success by any stretch of the imagination.

Spore was awful. If they spent less money on DRM and celebrity demos, and more on game production then maybe it would have had a fighting chance.

The amazing thing is that Spore is number 2 on the PC games top 10 best-selling list for October 1st and has been in the top three since it was launched.

No doubt. It's been hyped for years. They even demoed it on TED. This was supposed to be the game that changes everything. Even I (not much of a game player, to be honest) went out and bought it. But it was a disappointment.

There isn't even a game behind it - the AI is the worst I have ever seen since Doom 3 (which had "oh, see player, run at player" only AI). It is horrendous and I have done as Aimee did and deleted it, not caring I can only install it twice more, because why on earth would I play that game ever again?
BTW, I rarely delete any game from my hard drive - I still have WoW installed and I have a perma ban from them! (and now I have a nice article on my website about how racist Blizzard are).

Spore is the shortest lasting game from install to delete that I have ever had.

I don't think I'm exaggerating my displeasure with Spore, and the reason is because the game is basically a collection of 5 mini games.

The first game is a micro-biological version of "pac-man" that could easily have been one of those little flash-based games you play while goofing off at work.

Then you switch to a second, 3D game where you run around and eat and fight other critters. The third game is nearly identical to the second, but you can then control tribal units. It's not horrible, but it's not really very good either. Then the fourth game introduces vehicles and modern weapons. Games 2-4 represent a 3-phase transition from a one-on-one fighting game to a RTS game. In theory it's a great idea! The problem is, both the one-on-one fighting and the RTS is extremely shallow compared to other games that are dedicated to their genre. Their one-on-one cannot compete with any FPS or combat game, and their RTS portion is ages behind games like Command and Conquer.

Finally the space game ... well I thought navigating around an actual 3D planet was damned cool. I hope the Google-Earth style representation of maps catches on becomes the new standard in games. But the gameplay itself just wasn't compelling.

But my biggest beef with the game permeated every part of it ... the complete nurfing of the natural selection process. Your creature doesn't "evolve" in any way, instead it "levels up" allowing you to add more weapons and defenses. The design of your critter is completely irrelevant to the game. Stick a claw on the mouth, or on the arms, or on the tail ... it doesn't make a difference. The critter get's attack damage for having a claw and that's it.

So was spore a lump of shite? Not really. But there are few professional games on the market today that do a worse job than Spore for any given genre. If you want a fighting game, an RTS game, a space game, or a browser-based time waster ... go find a good one rather than this collection of sub-par games.

What a silly assumption, that someone would pay for a game! Why do you think is has DRM? We're all just waiting for a slight lapse and wham the game is downloaded all over the world!

Why do you think it has DRM!
