Spore Reviews

The first reviews of Spore are out - Gamespot gave it an 8.0 out of 10:

Spore for PC Review - PC Spore Review

PC Gamer UK gave it a 91%:
PC Review: Spore reviewed - ComputerAndVideoGames.com

Pretty good scores - it thankfully seems to hold up to most expectations. The fact that it took so long to be released could have potentially been a bad sign.

Spore comes out Sept 7. It will be available for download from Direct2Drive and EA's site at 7 am PST on the 7th:

Direct2Drive: Buy SPORE (Pre-Order) Download

Usually I consider an early release a worse sign. It means in many cases the publisher had it rushed and had features scrapped/poor QA in the process. A game shouldn't be released until it's done, period. I hate waiting for games as much as the next guy, but I rather wait half a year extra than end up with an unfinished crapfest.

I'll definitely buy this game, and look forward to seeing it in action. If done well (ie: low interference from EA), this could repair some of my faith towards other EA subsidiaries such as Bioware.

I have to wait for Amazon to express-ship next week, so I might be a day late, but I'll be there.

Another good review: Spore Review - Page 1 // PC /// Eurogamer - Games Reviews, News and More

Quote:
The many-Gods structure is a novel idea, but it's also the source of so much of Spore's appeal; the game-world is a Frankenstein's universe of inventive or funny or pop-culture or genital Adams-of-the-other-guy's-labours, and that self-replenishing variety (optional, if you're boring, and actually rather devoid of penis monsters) is as crucial to keeping the smile on your face and compulsion in your exploration as any of the game mechanics Maxis has implemented.
Score: 9/10

When you're talking Will Wright, the guy who with The Sims opened a huge gaming market long thought to not exist at all (female gamers of all ages, and elderly), who actually created sales phenomena with games that have no fixed objectives (The Sims and Sim City), I think EA knows to give him enough room to work.

Anyone know if there's any goodies involved in the pre-order? Oh, and does having the paid version of the Creature Creator get you anything other than a $10 rebate? (like, does it count as a pre-order? )

First person to correctly guess how many times Will Wright says "procedurally generated" in all of the interviews combined wins 500L!

Not really. But good luck to you, if you'd actually like to count.

I've been playing it for the last hour or so (was released midnight here!)

No goodies that I have found but I did get a extra 10% off on top of the Creature Creator rebate.

True. It's funny about The Sims.

I had never played any computer game (aside from a bit of a couple I got for my girls), or any online game.

I was in the store once and walked by a display of games and the box of The Sims caught my eye. I didn't even think twice about buying it for myself.

The only thing I've heard that was bad about the game is it can be finished in about eight hours, but I guess since you can use different creatures it has a lot of playability.

There was a larger proportion of female developers on this game than on most mainstream games, and this has been sited as the reason it was popular with female gamers. Makes sense really.

Alright, I admit it. I pirated it yesterday. I needed to see if my most anticipated game for the last 3 years was going to be another shitfest. I've been burned too many times in the past (The Sims Online, Master of Orion 3, Simcity Societies, that stupid Revolution game) to simply trust reviews or buy it blindly. Especially for a game as long-developed as Spore.

That being said, I'll be buying it as soon as I get off work next week.

I downloaded Spore at 1 pm yesterday. I stopped playing at 3am this morning.

It's full of polish and charm (the cut-scenes are adorable, Iv'e laughed out loud plenty of times). There is a LOT of detail going on, which is surprising. Space is immense, beautiful, and truly awe-inspiring.

Protip: SAVE OFTEN. I've had to restart three times due to a graphical glitch, an alt-tab crash, and a system hangup at a loading screen. Spore doesn't have an auto-save that I can see, so you can easily spend 5-6 hours going from cell to space and then lose it all.

Anyone with an ounce of creative spark is going to have a joygasm over this. Everything is player-generated, minus the plants (I suspect they'll become editable after an expansion or something, I'm sure). I didn't get to see any stuff "from the wild", as my pirated copy isn't allowed to go online. Maxis still ships with about 4 gigs of content though, and I've yet to see anything repeat.

All of the stages up to and including about a quarter of the space stage is basically an extended tutorial. Space is where it's at. It's a bit annoying sometimes, especially if you get into a war against someone - they have an infinite supply of ships, you have one at a time.

It runs great on my 2 year old rig (had to turn off depth of field and some shadows).

The creative tools are about as intuitive as you can get. If SL's tools were half as advanced as these you wouldn't ever see shitty builds. Everything is built just like the creatures.

The music is nice, although sometimes I wish I could pull some of the melodies or something to mp3 because some of them are awesome. It's all procedurally generated, meaning the music responds to what you do on-screen. It's like Rez, except very subtle.

Uh, what else. Lots of achievements to get, lots of unlockables (I don't have even a quarter of the unlockable stuff in space), tons of replay value. Your actions in previous modes determine your creature in later modes. So if you focused on peace in the tribal stage you'll be either religious or economic in the civilization mode, etc.

In short, I'll be first in line to buy this when it comes into town. You should too.

From Bigdownload.com:

Touted by many as a candidate for the greatest game ever made, we've invested several hours in the first portions of Electronic Arts' Spore in our quest to determine if it's really THAT good. So far, it's holding our interest. In the first few hours in playing the single player portion we can say that Spore's creator Will Wright seems to want to cram pretty much every game genre he can think of in one title (except maybe for first person shooters; maybe he just didn't have time).

Starting up Spore brings up the main menu where you have three choices: Play, Create and Share. Share is basically being able to check out other players' creations in Spore and sharing your own. Create opens up all of the game's various editors to allow you to make creatures, buildings, vehicles and space ships without the need to actually go in and play the game at all. We suspect a lot of folks might just ignore the actual game side of Spore and dive into making stuff.
