Will Wright also made SimLife, which DID allow for completely emergent life forms to occur if you let it run long enough. Actually, in most cases you'd have a barren wasteland if you let that game run, because it was a lot freakin' harder than learning Spore.

Well as Muka predicted, I was bored after 2 days. I was pretty pissed I spent money that could have gone to something more entertaining.

I decided to start a fresh world, this time on hard. I also changed my game plan. Instead of playing just to advance to the next level, I put more thought into my game plan. I watched my history page, tried to predict what would happen next and did not just kill every other species like in my first attempt.

I enjoyed it much more. The hard level is fun, so much more challenging. I am not even out of Creature Stage yet and played for nearly 4 hours on it.

So now my final review, on a scale from 1 – 10, 10 being the ultimate gaming experience……..I would give this a 6.5

God's been having problems with his latest Linux build.

God made a planet - something that is pregenerated in Spore - another reason that it's pants

But you can't start a game designing a planet, then designing creatures to populate it.. all you can do is change what an existing planet looks like.
If it wanted to be a sandbox, you should be able to create from the start - the starting planets aren't even randomly generated.
Even populous let you generate a random landscape then modify it as much as you liked before starting to play on it.
That was a sandbox.
Spore fails as sandbox and as a game

I'm predicting a slew of money grubbing add-ons for Spore, like an aquatic creature track expansion (underwater civilizations zomg!) and a planet/plant maker. But yeah, actually, after having unlocked quite a few terraform things, I can make my own planet the way I want it, and any bald moon suddenly becomes just a default model. It's true that to truly be a sandbox, you wouldn't need to unlock things, but some games require you to win a campaign before you can skirmish, and Spore requires you to play through each stage before you can revisit one.

I don't think it fails But I'm famous for making my own entertainment from any sort of thing (*cough* which might be one of the reasons I can spend so much time on SL)

They have already removed parts classed as completed, before selling it. Why? The only reason I can see is to charge for expansion packs.
Will Wright said that underwater civilisations were fully functional, until the game was released.

Not for me - they have convinced me that pirating rewards people who deserve the money and only punishes the people that churn out shit.

I was really hoping I'd get some Genesis Torpedoes like from Star Trek III when I reached the center of the galaxy. Instead, I get a limited use instant terraform. Yawn.

What?! Fuckers! The "Genesis Device" was one of those things Will Wright showed in many of the demos.

Those whores. Those fucking whores.

No underwater stage, no genesis device, no creature interaction.

Fuck them with a wooden spoon.

The flora editor was pulled as well, and will be in an expansion pack.

Yeah, they showed the underwater civilisations in a demo at one point too, but they made a HUGE show of the genesis device!
Also, showed off a creature exploding, spraying blood everywhere when dumped on a planet with no atmosphere - with the blood removed, you can hardly tell what is happening to the creature.

Spore expansion pack with flora editor planned - VideoGamesBlogger
There is no way people should have to pay for these things that were going to be included, and the plant editor has to have been finished, since they've used it to make all the plants (all the attributes are written into them even down to "created by Maxis" on each plant)

Quick Summary: Spore is a buggy, flakey pile of crap. Don't waste your money, because you KNOW you're not going to get any resolution from EA when it doesn't work for you.

Detailed Summary: I played it a LOT when it first came out; I earned my 50 hour play badge in just about one session (I know. I need help.)

But then it corrupted my save game files. All of them. Six in progress games. I didn't have a crash (though I have had several - Spore has a huge memory leak somewhere), it all saved and exited fine, but going back to any of my save games OR starting a new one, it CTD's after the initial load screen.

Following a four day email ping pong match with EA’s support chimps, they have closed my case as resolved by telling me to stop running the game on two video cards, stop running it on two cores, and stop running it on my sound hardware, and if I get any problems, get back to them…

Firstly, none of this actually helps, since my initial description was that I cannot save any games or start and save any new games because the single file that links ALL your game saves is corrupt, and they have done absolutely nothing to resolve that.

Secondly, how pathetic is it that I have to disable half the hardware on my pc to run it? I know they started coding it like 6 years ago, but does it only work on six year old pc’s or something?

In fact, apart from SLi, under which it flat refused to run, as I said, I ran the game fine for around 70 hours on dual cores with hardware accelerated sound, which really just adds up to EA not knowing what the fuck they’re talking about.

Because I don't want to lose an activation by reinstalling, I deleted said file (obviously I backed it up first) and that resets your star map to a fresh one. Except I now have another issue... EVERY empire I meet in space stage is the same species.

Apart from anything, it's ridiculously disorientating... imagine... I am at war with the Deceptilows, the Deceptilows, oh, and the Deceptilows. Fortunately I have alliances with the Deceptilows and the Deceptilows. Lets ask them if they'll attack the Deceptilows for me?

Sooo, since that didn't work, and I refuse to lose an activation, I'm off to download the cracked and DRM free torrent, like I guess I should have done before buying the game.

One of the first species I met who hated me, was er, me. Surely it should check to see what you are playing as at the time, before adding yourself as species you can meet - I am all for species you have created being in the galaxy, but not the one you are playing as at the time

It goes without saying: If my experience with the basic game wasn't all that great (and it hasn't been), don't be talking to me about expansions. I'll save my money.
