Ryzom - it's made be a French company, it died on it's arse, now it has been bought by a new developer and aparently it's pretty sweet.
I have been messing around with this tonight and it is interesting if nothing else, you have no level, but your skills do, skills like magic, fight and things like that. I have trained my magic up and am now killing things with ease.
It's a little like WoW, but not really, hard to explain, but it does seem to have a lot of quality about it, and best of all, it's free!

There is only one English server, and the chat is full of people answering questions, and chatting in a nice way - always a great sign to me.
So far I have learned that you can edit your skills, do all kinds of things to your character, and wierdly, you can use a level editor to create quests for other people!
Yeah, using the editor, you create a quest, create a mini world, then submit it and it gets added to a quest hub, that anyone can do.
I played around with this, and it seems like Second Life crossed with WoW - you create the content for others to complete.
I am still early into this, so I cannot answer any in depth questions, sorry.
Oh, it's pretty too:

Give it a go! - like I say, the very best thing for me so far is the community, ask a question, you get an answer, there is no 'lolz u r doin it rong' bullshit, just a fun group of people.
It's early days for me, but this could either be the best or worst thing I have ever downloaded.

What I am reading so far, it seems like the world after the starter zone is a total sandbox, and pretty much everything is user made that is fun.
This seems incredible to me.

I did try Ryzom way back when, cant remember why it didnt hold my attention. Actually I cant remember anything about it - lol.

And that's why it died. It was a pretty game, one of the prettiest I ever tried. Still is. But originally there just wasn't anything to do. It was like the developers worked soooo hard to get it up and running and looking great

and then forgot all about that 'quest' stuff

I remember seeing this at E3 in 2004, I probably still have the beta disc they gave me at their booth. Sad thing is, I never touched the game, by the time I decided to give it a try it was already out of beta, oh well, heh. I guess I'll give it a try now that it's free

I signed up to beta this back in the day but it never took off. It's nice to see it back.

khamon is set up but the client is going to take three hours to download so I'll see y'all there eventually. The Ring is apparently not released yet? Looks loads of fun though. WoW may have to suffer my absence for a while. Do you think they'll be okay with that?

I started it. So far it's fun.

I'm now in my third quest for the fighter in the newbie area. Have to hunt down these big pig like animals. *grins* It's BACON TIME!

I tried this game out during beta and was not very impressed by it, but since its been awhile since then and a different company is working on it I'll try it again. I've already registered for it and there are now 271 more slots available.

Initial report: pretty well crafted, nice graphics, confusing gear/leveling/combat system but I do forget how hard the learning curve on WoW was.

Worth more time learning.
