There's a lot more where that comes from.

Yay! Collectible sex card game is turning out fun.

The combat is cool as well. I hadn't expected this to be possible with the Aurora Engine.

But the biggest bonus for me is the story. I love how your actions have consequences. Like in Act I I sold weapons to someone, and in Act II I find one of my main quest contacts is found dead, killed by the weapons I sold to that group, and by dying he has ensured that instead of being able to use a signet ring to get into some guarded areas, I now have to bribe people.

Wait, you had sex with her? All I did was lay down on the bed with her, drop my sword to the floor, and then cuddle for bit. I pulled up her shirt and blew raspberries on her belly for a while (omg her giggle is infectious), and then we spent some time drinking wine out of each other's belly buttons. We kissed a little bit, and I told her stories - most of which I had to make up due to my memory loss. She has an amazing voice and she sang for me while I laid next to her stroking her long red hair. Oh yes, it was fun and I was quite turned on, but it was nothing like sex! I don't know Joshua, I think you are role playing this game in a very twisted way that reveals just how silly you are. Just sayin ...

That's because you probably have the censored American version. Import the European version or run a patch to re-enable blood and titties.

I have been playing for about a week now - about an hour a night. I just finished the first chapter. I must say that the boss battle at the end of chapter one was surprisingly difficult, in a game that has not really offered much of a challenge so far (I am playing on the middle difficulty). In fact, I think I tried this boss ten times before I finally beat him, and was forced to go back and learn alchemy so I could make a couple of potions for the fight.

So far I am really enjoying the game. The story is pretty good, and I am doing as many of the side-quests as I can. I think I am level 10 now. Sometimes the dialog is awkward, but my imagination smooths over the rough spots. Yes, I have bedded a couple of maidens. Not much to that really. I sometimes get frustrated with the style of combat. But I really like that you can pause the game and rotate the camera to consider your next move.

Joshua, are you still playing? Are you enjoying the game?

The camera is the only thing that really bothered me so far. In confined spaces it always gets stuck in an annoying corner.

So far I've only had two fights that gave me any trouble. The first being the end boss of chapter III.

The second is not long after that, early in chapter IV, where I am faced with the Wild Hunt. I was pretty stupid in replacing my blue silver rune sword with a red silver rune sword. The red one has a good chance of blinding or incinerating enemies, but that's not useful against many types. The blue sword had 50% more damage and that was really noticeable. With the right oils on it I was dishing out nearly 200 damage per hit in strong mode at lvl 27.

The problem is that rune swords can't be bought back. The three blue runes I spent are forever lost, so now I can't get it back. I think I'll use a Witcher save game editor to replace my red sword with the blue one again.

Yes I'm still playing, it's taken a bit of a backseat though so I've only gotten to the beginning of the first chapter, after the Beast first attacks the village.

I had the camera first set to the over-the-shoulder mode, which then got flipped on accident to isometric. I didn't think I would but I LOVE that one much better. Combat initially has been one of the things I don't particularly like that much since it seems somewhat cheesy and the stances are a little ridiculous to deal with. But changing the camera oddly improved it.

I'm only a bit in so far but really I do like it a lot. (Minus the gratuitous sluttery!)

BTW. The combat animations become much cooler later on in the game when you spend some upgrades on your combat styles.

Ah, thanks for that. I am going to give the alternate camera view a try. I find the combat frustrating, but I bet it's mostly the camera. Sometimes it seems like when I click, nothing happens. I am sure there is a reason, but I can't quite figure it out.

I think there is a reason, there's a dinky multiplier system for combat where you do more damage if you click at a *specific* time, but if you click too soon or too late it fucks up and you have to start over.

Oh yeah, I do know about that. I am chaining combos like my grandma chain stitches embroidered pillows (wtf?). I am talking about something else, that I can't quite describe, because I am probably imaging it. Just a general non-responsiveness during combat. Could be the wine, really.

Yeah. The combat does feel a bit non-responsive now and then. I think it's caused when the camera moves a little, since it makes it easy sometimes to click right beside the monster instead of on it -_-

I think that is probably it. I notice it more when the camera is zoomed in close, which probably makes the camera rotate more quickly. I think I had the same problem with Diablo 2. I have been drinking wine and gaming for a long time now.

I finally got around to downloading the enhanced version and playing into the tutorial. So I'm not very far along, but right now I have to say:

* The graphics are incredible. The vistas are breathtaking.
* The sword combat gives me a headache. Possibly because I'm super-intense when I fight in a game. (I actually break a sweat when I play Saints Row 2). It got very frustrating trying to kill 3 bandits at a time when I could barely hit them and had such a hard time getting the mouse cursor to stay on the target.
* The female NPC has way too much impossible negative gravity setting in her boobie bounce. She's liable to give herself black eyes.

* Why can't I play the female mage?!

The combat system doesn't seem to be its strong suit to me either.

Still it's good so far.

If you are constantly missing an enemy with an attack, try switching to a different style. Most of the focus is on using a certain style for a certain enemy.

Big lumbering bandits usually take the strong steel style, small quick ones take the fast steel style, and if there are more than 3 of anything you can usually get away with using the group style and killing them all at once.

Monsters take more damage from the silver sword once you get it, but there's the same strong, fast, group styles for it as well.

It takes a bit of getting used to, but I think it works well.

Deciding what combat style to use is pretty much the crux of the combat yeah.

Using the right sword, using the right style, and with the right damage enhancement oils - you can defeat pretty much every enemy in the game without a problem. There are only a few examples in later levels which get really tough.

Also remember that if you use Swallow potions for your health, that it's best to drink them BEFORE combat. Since they work gradually.

Anyway ... for monsters that don't appear in the journal yet and you can't figure out what combat style, just try strong style first. If you miss more than 1/2 of your attacks, switch to fast style, you'll only do half damage that way but you'll almost never miss. Group style does even less damage than fast style still, but has the advantage of doing damage to every enemy in range, so when fighting 3 or more enemies at once, it's total DPS is higher than the other two.

Also, at very high levels group style becomes the best style to use against weaker enemies. For example drowners keep bothering you all the way into chapter IV when you're around lvl 30, but they don't really become stronger than they are in chapter I. They got one power upgrade from drowners to drowned dead, but even the drowned dead die in 2 hits by the end of chapter III/early chapter IV. At this level I just use group style as default combat style and only switch to the other styles when I'm fighting bosses.

I did note that I'm still in the tutorial. So the narrative voice did come up and say "This brute moves slow. Switch to Strong combat style".

I got that part. I just can't hit anything yet. The sword attributes say "-30 to hit" which also might have something to do with it.

Please tell me I can get a super-uber longsword of KILLEVERYTHING at some point? I could use it right now.

Well, kind of. It does use the Aurora engine, but it has been massively extended and the entire rendering engine has been rewritten.

Quote:
The Witcher is powered by a heavily modified version of the Aurora Engine by BioWare, enhanced for a single-player experience. A number of changes have been introduced to the original engine; some of them are described below.

One of the most important features of the Aurora Engine is that the world is designed exactly as the developers envisioned, rather than using a tile-based system. All the environments are developed in 3ds Max and then exported into the game engine. As a result, developers can create unique game worlds, rather than recycling the same tiled objects over and over again. CD Projekt's version of the engine supports lightmaps generated in 3ds Max. Shadows generated this way are reported to look more realistic, and provide better game performance.

The modified engine also includes texture paint, a special tool that allows the developer to paint the environment using custom textures. This enables the developer to make the game world truly unique. New realistic skyboxes and water effects designed specifically for The Witcher were added to the engine. The natural light during various phases of the day is realistically altered, and the day and night transitions serve to enrich the game's ambience. The weather can dynamically change from a light drizzle to a dark, stormy downpour accompanied by thunder and lightning.
A screenshot of an outdoor scene in The Witcher displaying additional lighting effects.

All the in-game and tool set rendering is done using DirectX 9, and the engine now supports many different shaders (water effect, bump mapping, environment mapping, etc). Additionally, the whole rendering system has been unified and a new light manager was added.

Other important changes include motion-captured animation, improved physics modelling, new mechanics and combat system. Additional modifications include the introduction of portals and the inclusion of additional graphical effects (glows, advanced dynamic shadows, blurs, etc.)
