Gaming Addiction now recognised by the WHO

Gaming addiction classified as disorder by WHO - BBC News

Quote:
The guide contains codes for diseases, signs and symptoms and is used by doctors and researchers to track and diagnose disease.

It will suggest that abnormal gaming behaviour should be in evidence over a period of at least 12 months "for a diagnosis to be assigned" but added that period might be shortened "if symptoms are severe".

Symptoms include:
  • impaired control over gaming (frequency, intensity, duration)
  • increased priority given to gaming
  • continuation or escalation of gaming despite negative consequences
Dr Richard Graham, lead technology addiction specialist at the Nightingale Hospital in London, welcomed the decision to recognise the condition.

"It is significant because it creates the opportunity for more specialised services. It puts it on the map as something to take seriously."

Whether or not you want to give it an official "name" could be debated, but I think if you are hitting those three symptoms for more than a 12 month period, you certainly have a problem you might need help dealing with. (I say that as someone who played hooky and called into work twice the first month I discovered Second Life.)

is there any article that breaks it down even more? at what point does it become an addiction over obsession or love?

loss of sleep and social is common in the digital age.

theres lots of people who prefer Digital women over real life woman. they don't even know how to deal with a real woman. i know I've turned down several occasions to hang with co-workers after work to instead go play games.

it's definitely an addiction if your ignoring your bodily needs of food and bathroom. there are articles of people dying after long gaming session.
BBC NEWS | Technology | S Korean dies after games session

Oh, right.
Because it starts off all fun and games down at the pool hall just, you know, playing a mean pinball. The next thing you know, shit gets really weird fast and you get this:
