Is Bioshock a personality test?

Don't read on if you haven't played this game. It contains spoilers.

--

Until a fortnight ago I didn't know there were multiple endings to this game. So I played the last stages again and killed two little sisters so I could see how it would conclude.

It felt bad. Really bad. I'm almost ashamed to admit it here.

When I first played the game, I simply couldn't bring myself to 'Harvest' a single one. I rescued them all. I didn't trust Atlas before I knew the truth about him, partly because he urged me to kill one of these little girls.

I wonder -- did you kill any little sisters before you knew it would affect the outcome?

Do you think it says much about the kind of person you are?

There's three endings one kindof bad, one really bad, and the good one if you didn't kill anybody.

You can view them all on Youtube though.

Oh, I thought the REALLY bad one was the same as the bad one but with a harsher sounding Tennenbaum.

I think I'll watch that one on YouTube because there's no way I'm going to play it again just to kill all the little sisters.

/yes I'm a wimp.

So, did you kill any the first time around Joshua?

I'm not too keen on kids myself, but I just couldn't do it. I suppose it says a lot about the immersive qualities of the game. I don't have these pangs of conscience after taking out innocent civilians with sniper rifles and cars in GTA.

No I didn't kill any, but I also knew about the whole attempt at "videogame morality" which is never all that realistic and usually is a cross between making a bunch of deliberate choices to be an asshole with the same evil ending, or a bunch of angelic, morally white choices to get a dinky good gun one.

Now I'm wondering how many games I've played that had alternate endings.

This moral outcome thing is a new one on me.

Good on you for not killing the little girls.

Part of me was so curious to see what would happen, but I still didn't do it. I'm amazed at that fact alone. I mean, it's just a game for gad sake.

I was the same way, Walker. I just couldn't do it. It seemed like I was able to work through the game without any real issues with running out of Adam. I could have used some more, but overall, I was managing with what I got without killing the little sisters. I just couldn't bear to kill them, so I took out my aggression on the Big Daddies instead. Man - those things can soak up a lot of abuse before they die!

Yeah. My heart even went out for the Big Daddies after a while though. I mean, they don't bother you unless you mess with them or their charge (the little sister)... and to hear their wailing as they banged on the wall to get a little sister's attention was so sad. Maybe I'm just a sap and not cut out for gaming.

Do you really get more Adam when you kill the little sisters as opposed to rescuing them? I didn't even notice when I killed those two just to see an alternate ending.

Rescuing them always resulted in some Adam, but you'd often get tonics, and Tenenbaum would reward you with lots more Adam after rescuing one of the little sisters on each level anyway.

Fable is fun until it gets grating. I *loved* the ability that blew everyone back, it was great fun.

Oh beth if you get your guile high enough on the pc version you can pretty much print money...

I knew about the multiple endings and wanted the bad ending, but when it came to it, I saved all the girls because I felt guilty.

If Jack Thompson had been in the game, I would have used the wrench. It's messier. Either that or I would have lured him into the water, then ZZZZZZAP!

Edit: Before I hear from his lawyers, which I suppose he needs, considering the status of his career as an attorney, I'd like to say that the foregoing was meant satirically, and is in no way an indication of what I would do if I met Jack Thompson in person. It was not, nor should it be construed to be in any way, a threat.

yeesh. Can I say the guy is a flaming jackass without getting sued? I hope so.

I would have used the Ice Plasmid on him, then shattered him into a million pieces with the shotgun.

On the downside there would be no loot, but on the upside, I wouldn't want his stuff anyway.

I knew there was multiple endings before I played. I didn't kill any of the the little sisters. When I go back to play through a second time I'll do the opposite. I did the same thing with Mass Effect. I played through the first time and maxed out the paragon stat. The second time I played through I went out of my way to be a jerk to everyone, purposely picking the most inappropriate and dickish responses in every conversation. That was actually hard to do since it so went against my nature. I was disappointed that there was no real consequence. Still an amazing game, but it would have been better if your choices had a real impact on how the story unfolded.

Bioshock is like a Turing test for Randroids.

... oh wait, you were talking about killing little girls? I don't know about that one, but I still feel a little guilty about those deer I killed in Oblivion earlier .

GTA IV has the same sort of dilemma in at least two places (or at least I think so) but I'm sure if I talk about it further someone will read it and yell at me for spoiling their fun with the game .

Yeah, don't ruin my GTA:IV fun.

I'm still holding out for the PC version.
