The Random Fact Game Thingy

Well, not really a game, I guess...

Because I'm a dork, I sometimes get a bug to research odd things. Or things that perhaps aren't so odd, but yield odd results. These little bits of trivia are typically useless, unless by some crazy fortune they happen to come up in conversation.

Such as: Did you know there are three correct plural forms of hippopotamus? Hippopotamus, hippopotamuses and hippopotamii.

Or tonight. Reading up on Salvador Dali, I read that his lifelong muse, Gala, gave him a black eye when she was 81. He responded by breaking one of her ribs. At one point in his madness, Dali was convinced he was a vampire and asked Gala what he should do, and to tell him "in an obscene way, so that I can be both a man and a beast." Gala said, "Kill me!" and then suggested how. Crazy couple, those two.

So. Got any good useless info?

I hereby declare Winged Hussars the most awesomest military idea in history.

Quote:
The innovative Poles developed a very simple solution: ride straight through the musket and pike formations. They employed a very long lance, which was hollow to keep its weight manageable, to hit the pikeman before he could hit the rider or his horse. Furthermore, the impact often threw the pikeman into the ranks behind him, thus adding to the chaos at the receiving end. At Kircholm (1605), Swedish pike and musket formations were simply wiped off the face of the earth.

The Husaria, or winged hussars, were more heavily armored than the familiar Hungarian hussar. The Husaria wore leopard furs over their armor to terrify opposing horses that were not used to them, noting that a horse’s sense of smell is comparable to a dog’s. The wings, which emitted a rattling or hissing noise during the charge, had the same effect. In addition, they prevented lariat-armed Tartars from lassoing the Husaria.

PS: Wonderful idea-- i have a lot of mildly relevant information in my head, too, that could use a forum. Of course, one could argue that a liberal arts education is a just bunch of mildly useful information.

Richard Milhouse Nixon was the first US President whose name contains all the letters from the word "criminal". William Jefferson Clinton is the 2nd.

I'm not sure if I should be amused that someone took the time to figure that out or scared.

That's an old one that I remember reading, no way I would bother. Besides, with those two it's almost a given.

Paul Daniels toupe is in fact a symbiotic sentient life form of unknown origin.

The Washington Monument is actually the vitrified remains of the shaft of his penis, and unlike the other heads on Rushmore, Washington's is actually life sized.

A blink lasts approximately 0.3 seconds.

In 1982, a high school student from Los Angeles, California unscrambled the Rubik's Cube in 22.95 seconds.

A dime has 118 ridges around its edge.

In New Mexico, over 11,000 people have visited a tortilla chip that appears to have the face of Jesus Christ burned into it.

St. Paul, Minnesota was originally called Pigs Eye after a man named Pierre "Pig's Eye" Parrant who set up the first business there.

What we now call French toast used to be called Battered Bread Arme Ritter in American cookbooks prior to WW1.

Would it be Freedom Toast now?

The classic vision of the Viking hordes all wearing the large double horned helmet is a fiction.
No archaeological evidence has ever been found to support the image, which probably was invented as part of an anti-Viking propaganda campaign.

The raping and pillaging part is probably accurate though

Lots of polar bears typing "stewardesses" then?

How's this:

The Dutch Tulip Mania of 1637 sounds ... eerily familiar. People dumped all their savings into tulip bulbs, believing they would go up in value. One person traded goods (including four oxen, eight pigs, 12 sheep, a bed and a lot more) worth 2,500 florin for ONE bulb! Speculators like him got into the tulip bulb futures market, bought them on contract at one price, and without ever actually seeing the actual damn tulip bulb, resold them to ... tulip bulb collectors, I guess you would call them. And then, the value of tulip bulbs did something unfathomable: they lost value! People were left holding onto tulip bulbs that now were worth a fraction of what they bought them for, and family fortunes had been lost.

The more things change...

I was just now researching the roots of the word "bupkis." Did you know that:

Quote:
A colorful usage, though more emphatic expression (in Yiddish more so than in English) is "Bupkis mit Kuduchas", translating roughly to "shivering shit balls" - kuduchas referring to the condition of generalized shaking palsy.
SHIVERING SHIT BALLS. Srsly.

The famous Roman orator Pliny the not as elder as the elder and not as young as the younger died in 33 AD from a twister related injury.

Cleopatra's needle, is not in fact a needle... it is a dressmaking pin.

The London Underground route from Leicester Square to Covent Garden is the most popular for tourists despite the fact that it's much quicker to cover this distance on foot. There is only 0.2 miles between the stations, and the route is hardly complex.
