Did something change recently?

So something seems different. When I view an updated subscribed thread in my User CP, it no longer immediately disappears when I refresh said list of subscribe threads, it just un-bolds. They used to disappear immediately until another person posted in them.

Also, the New Posts button shows a much shorter list, seemingly only those things that have changed since my last visit. It used to show a much longer list, and a cut off that said the threads following this line have not changed since your last visit, or something to that effect.

i use 'no email notification' in tandem with the usercp page and have noticed this anomaly as well.

I believe Cris changed it because it was bogging down the server too much during the day when there was high traffic to the site.

What I had noticed was that, when I read a thread through the "new threads" list, it doesn't disappear from the list. And threads where I was the last poster appear.
A bit disconcerting - but I'll get used to it. Good to know it's not me.

Oh no! Did he have to switch back to the cookie tracking of new posts?

I agree Mourna. Everytime I have to log out and log back in my unread posts are gone. I suppose I'll get used to this but I preferred the other format better. I didn't miss anything that way.

Yes, I did - the feature was increasingly bringing the forum down to a crawl. People were not marking forums read, so each new post query was generating a huge amount of load.

I actually prefer things to stay on the list, and unbold when you've seen/read the most recent activity already.

grrrr! I loved when they dissapeared, and i marked forums read frequently.

Even ignoring annoyingly long threads..

Alright, I switched it back for now to the database method while I try some other things to optimize performance. I did make some changes to it, however. Any thread or post not read within 2 days will be marked read. Also, I removed the display of who is browsing particular threads.

I'll take simplicity and speed over a slow site any day.

I understand. I might have come off as a tad hostile, but I'm just really disappointed, as that improved my forumsing by about 500%. But I appreciate that you tried it at our request. The change back just means I won't be around as much during the day.

And for the record, you never told us (that I saw) that marking posts read had such a large impact. Being 'tarded, I wasn't as diligent about this as I should have been.

Wasn't me, I did that habitually.

Cristiano, throwing a "LIMIT 100" at the end of the new posts query might help quite a bit (after the ORDER BY clause); does anyone really read beyond page 4 of new posts? They're all products by that point.
