and the reason that i groaned at the initial post is because that while i agree that its good form, i disagree that somehow it will earn you goodwill or give your argument any additional credibility.

Well it's true, good conduct will not make a person's bad argument become a good argument. I could very politely, civilly, and maturely explain my views that the sun revolves around the earth ... my good behavior won't help me much, nor should it.

But bad behavior will do two things. It will cause your audience to become defensive and less receptive to your ideas ... even if they are good. It will also cause people to hesitate or abstain from expressing their own ideas ... and that is a loss for everybody.

People who don't care about expressing ideas or hearing other people's ideas will not see this as a bad thing. These types of folks can go around bashing people and enjoying a sense of power as they rule SLU like it were professional wrestling ring. They may not even feel the loss as the thoughtful folks slink off to have thoughtful discussions somewhere else.
