Changes to the SLU Members in-world group

As Cris is super occupied with stuff in RL I volunteered to help out with the issue with spammers in the in-world group.

The group is now closed to enrollment and requires an invite from an officer to join. Other than myself, I've elevated the following volunteers to officers:

Ann Launay
Cindy Claveau
Mocksoup Graves
Lewis Luminos
Aki Shichiroji
Meltemi Case
Quantum Destiny
Ned Easterwood

Any of these people can add members to the group. I don't know what criteria Cris wants to utilize but I would say it's probably best to not add someone who's not even posted on SLU before, but that's really up to him to clarify.

Also as per his request I've ejected all the users still in the group who are banned from SLU. However there were quite a large number of names in the group I didn't recognize who have never posted here, so I'm leaving it to him what to do about them.

Notices are also off now, Cris will make a decision on whether to allow those open to everyone or let officers post them on request, but there was a lot of spamming going on with those as well.

If anyone sees anyone spamming for things in group chat, please let Cris, myself or any of the other officers know so we can kick them out. And if anyone else wants to volunteer to be an officer, contact Cris.

Shouldn't the group charter say how people can join ? Currently it just says "A group for members of the SLUniverse.com web site" .

That's a good point; I changed it to say to contact an officer for admission, with a list of the current ones.

Cris can change it if he'd like something else.

Cool. Thankyou.

ETA: I'm not sure that I agree with turning off notices to be honest. It's been a popular way of sharing items that SLU members have created, as well as notifying people of events whre SLU members are DJing. That's been incredibly useful for me and I'm disappointed to see it go.

It works well when the officers can send them. The flood of spam from that other forum is a key issue here, and this way, we get to avoid this sort of nonsense.

Anyway, someone invite me please.

I turned notices off in the group months ago because of the sheer amount of DJing notices; frankly I don't think that's the place for any of them, but I recognize I have a militant stance on that. But people shouldn't be sending out notices for events six times a day, which has been happening recently going through the recent notices, and that's just inconsiderate. Cris only enabled them to be sent by other people than him around Christmas time so people could send out gifts and it's irksome that they got inundated in crap in just a few months. Before then nobody could send them out anyway.

That was a point of contention with the SC group too and the rule was "One notice per day." But it's really up to him to decide on.

I'll admit to not being too displeased that notices are off. I rarely learned of new events via group messages - it seemed to be the same one or two events advertised every single day.

Thanks Cris-by-Proxy!

I'm ambivalent about notices... I like getting notices for SLU-related social events, but I really don't need to see ads for someone's new shop, as much as I like shopping at the stores of SLUsers... to me, that's what the forum ads are for, and I'm totally cool with those as they help offset the hosting costs. Posting ads or going "hay guise I just put up a new item @ mi store lol buy plz" in group chat just feels like using the popularity of SLU without supporting Cris to me. I could also do without the random event notices from people who don't really post here, too. Especially if you've made a point of saying "This is why I don't post much at SLU anymore"

ps.: presents are cool, I like getting present notices. Haha.

I don't mind when one of our members is performing or dj'ing themselves. Other than that - I'd rather not see 'em.

With 8 of us as officers, including two Brits, it shouldn't be hard to find someone online.

Excellent news, the spam was getting silly.

Do we need to join up again then? Or is it invitation only from here on in?

If someone on SLU launches a new venture, then I don't mind hearing about it. Once. After that, if I want to follow anyone, then I'll join their own promotion group.

I've occasionally announced my events on the group, because it seemed other people were doing so. I never treated the SLU group as an extension of my own group but I do from time to time send one notice or one group chat as my event begins. (Usually group chat; I used a notice this week because group chat is broked.) If that's been an annoyance or counter to anyone's expectation I do sincerely apologize for it.

I have had people tell me that they don't have a slot open to join my group but "it's okay because you announce in the SLU group." :/ In fact members of my group receive other notices that I don't send to the SLU group but that's neither here nor there.

I'd love a clear statement of policy on this from Cris or from the group's officers if he delegates the decision to the officers. If the general consensus is that "hearing about SLUer's events" is not one of the purposes of the group, then I absolutely won't use it for that again.

I think this needs to come from Cris. If we had a clear statement of policy, we could then have notices back on.

I don't think one notice from time to time has ever been an issue.

It's multiple notices every day by the same handful of people that always causes frustrations; like I said this was a similar problem and argument with the Second Citizen group too.

I don't think that anyone expects no events or notices to be advertised at all, but personally I think that it's just inappropriate to constantly use the group as a secondary venue for your advertising. As Beebo said, if you have an opening or a big event by all means, and if you want people to follow you after that, utilize your own resources. When you also have people advertising who hardly ever post on SLU or have actively said they won't, that's also very frustrating. And the spam for the forum is not why notices got shut off, there was a lot of spam going around from people well before that started happening; any time I've logged in and had group chat pop up, people have been complaining about constant advertisements.

When notices are constantly churning, it makes a lot of people like myself shut them off completely; I have to have my IMs go to my email so I get support messages, since I hardly log into SL to begin with. There's no way to isolate group notices from not also being included in that without shutting them off. If I don't, I'm constantly getting spammed at home in real life as well as in SL, and capping my IMs off faster as well. So I turn them off when it gets to be a constant annoyance. Going through the notices in the last few days I completely missed all the nice stuff that's been passed out because of that.

^ is just my opinion personally; keep in mind though that before the end of December notices were off as well. Cris just turned them on so people could pass out Christmas gifts, then never got around to turning them off again. Before December no one was bringing it up as a problem.
