Madhu,

Announcing an event in group chat is fine. It was the notices that were problematic (not from you, just the sheer volume in general).

I've an event notice in my email inbox this morning - are we going back to using notices to advertise events?

Dancien's weekly music event went out on group notices last night, rather than on SLU chat. I must have misunderstood the guidelines for usage because I thought that was the sort of thing we were clearing out of the IMs.

I would think that Forum Night at PMG would go out that way. Maybe we need clearer guidelines for officers.

Well I thought that it had been decided that advertising events in chat was ok, but advertising them in notices wasn't.

That was my opinion, unless they are Group events - e.g., PMG Night.

But somebody had to send that for Dan, unless he has been made an officer.

So how is it decided which events are group events and which are not? I think it's best to keep it simple - either (any) event adverts can be made via notices, or they can't. I would personally prefer that they are kept to chat, but that's just my opinion. Which ever way it is to be, we all just need to be clear.

That distinction is completely lost on me. I thought it was unique events that might qualify for a notice -- ie, one-time events of special interest to SLUers, although I'm not quite sure who makes that judgment.

Dancien's notice about Baby Seals last night, PMG Night, Madhu's Cafe Monday Night are all group events that happen more or less on a regular basis. Cris told Madhu it was perfectly fine to mention her Cafe Night in chat, so wouldn't that apply to Dancien as well?

I'd like to get a handle on this since I run a social club too and will on occasion have events (if I can get my ass in gear).

I'd like to have it clear, too, in case someone asks me to announce PMG tonight.

I posted this notice and did so primarily for this reason.

I logged in yesterday to an immediate IM about the event and given that said event is commonly patronized by a fair number of SLU folk, I passed it on for them.

I am sorry sending this notice bothered you.

Right. Also, just so there are no further problems with it. There will be no notices sent via SLU group for anything on my parcel, Club Baby Seals or PMG.

Hope that clears anything up.

I wasn't bothered by it, I'm just trying to figure out what the guidelines are for social events of a regular nature. Both Dancien and Madhu, for instance, have regular events attended by a number of SLUers, so I'm presuming that whatever applies to one will apply to the other. And that in turn will apply to me in the future as well.

So what can we all ask for without creating confusion? I'm comfortable sending out my own announcements in chat or notices, whichever is considered appropriate.

Just an idea - we had this same problem with SC / Phreak Radio. I'd like to get a once-daily summary of upcoming events. We have some clever people on here. How about a bot that grabs "today's events" off the event forum, logs in as an alt we create who's an officer, creates a notecard and sends it out once a day with the events for the next 24 hours? That'd be kind of cool. Adam could do it in his sleep!

Well speaking for myself, that one notice didn't bother me, but it would bother me if it was just one of many. The reason I posted in this thread about it was I just wanted to be clear on what had been decided on this, as I thought we were going to avoid posting events in notices.

It's be kind of cool. But do you think people would bother reading the notecard? I mean apparently there are issues with unchecking the receive notice button.

Since there's no way to block some notices and not others, that option really isn't the root issue.

As a "user" member of the SLU group, as opposed to my role as someone who would consider posting, personally I'd prefer not to get notices about recurring group events that I'm already very familiar with, but wouldn't mind getting one-time events that I might miss otherwise. But if those are ruled out too, I'm okay with that as well.

Getting a heads up from Chat works really well because it doesn't affect my IM cap and catches me only when I'm inworld and possibly in the mood to attend.

I'll just state again that I liked getting the group notices, even if I couldn't attend most of the events. I like knowing what you all are up to, and I just don't have enough group slots open to join your individual groups to keep up with your events. Without the notices, for me it's "out of sight, out of mind" and I won't attend at all. I never thought that anyone was being particularly spammy, and I pretty much recognized the names of everyone who sent out a notice. I truly didn't think it was a problem at all.

When people act juvenile about this, all around, over a free group that's provided for fun, not an obligation on behalf of anyone involved, you look stupid.

If you can't discuss your point of view, and this goes for all involved, without pitching a fit and threatening to take your toys home if you don't get your way, you look like a child.

There are enough headaches to deal with about this stuff without having to put up with grown adults threatening to "quit" if they don't get what they want. Stop it.

I was glad to receive that notice, Aki. I had logged in a short time prior and was wondering whether there would be an event at CBS.

I also didn't think it was a big problem. It seemed like recently the issue really involved one person using notices to spam, although maybe I am missing something.

In my opinion, I completely agree with Beebo. The only thing that needs to be sent through SLU notices are for events and things directly related to SLU. PMG would be fine, it's related to SLU. "Hi I'm DJing tonight at this club if anyone's interested" is not. If you invited other people into your DJ group and made them officers would you be okay with them sending notices for their own DJing event, club opening, store sale, etc? Probably not. It's not quite the same thing since none of those things are competing with SLU, but they're still using the SLU group to advertise nothing related to it, when SLU itself already provides many options to advertise for events if you want to utilize them. Ways that are probably seen a lot more often than a group notice anyway given that a lot of people turn them off outright.

Passing a gift to the group members is fine, advertising that you've placed a gift at your store on so and so parcel and incidentally there happens to be a sale right now is probably not going to be.

Group chat is totally different in my opinion, spam away whatever opening or event or club night you're doing. Those can be ignored easily, group notices have a very detrimental effect to those of us who reliably need our IMs uncapped. I don't get group chat when I'm offline, but invitations to clubs do go to my email.

Beyond that, people need to join up groups specific to the events and stores and clubs and DJs; I know that there's a limited number of group slots, but the SLU group is not an aggregate for all disparate interests within SLU and a free source of advertising. There's lots and lots of ways to post events and such here. And if that's not generating enough buzz that's something for the event-operators in question to think on, because I don't think the SLU group should be a method to promote other people's events that aren't related to the forum.

This is only my opinion, nullified if Cristiano has other intentions. Either way, people sending out notices need to be a lot less selfish about being asked not to and not threaten to leave the group if they can't. People receiving notices need to stop freaking out and going "OH HE'S BREAKING THE RULES, HE'S BREAKING THE RULES!" the moment they see one. This does not need to be a point of contention, it is so ridiculous.

Well then ... if I can't stomp my feet, pitch a hissy fit, whine like a 3 year old, and call people names, well I'll ... I'll ... I'll ... I'll just take my dollies and go home. You big poopy head!

I think posting a request for clarification on the situation is VERY different to whinging about someone breaking rules. If I wasn't an officer, I wouldn't give a flying fuck. But if I am going to help out in that capacity, I WOULD like to know where I stand, and I would like to know what the rules are. Hence my post.
