Business: Madhu's Cafe Blog Entries: 3 | Just to unscientifically take the temperature of the group - is the position on group chat different from group notices? Asking for purely mercenary reasons - I have been known to send a group chat when my event starts. And I'm talking about an almost weekly event, not a one time thing. Again, I don't want to use the group for this if there's a general consensus (or a decree) that it's not what the group is for.

My Mood: | I don't care about group chat; that doesn't send me offline messages to my email. I know some people are really militant about that, but you can always just close the IM window if you don't want to see. |

| I honestly didn't think the "spam" was all that bad. I get a lot of group notices from other groups which are much more active than SLU (like Free*Style), so SLU is pretty mild compared to those groups. And most of what I saw was notices about events being held by active SLU people, so I didn't think there was anything wrong with that.

My Mood: | I kinda like the notices, just hate when they are used by people not really part of SLU. Why not discipline the people who spam the notices rather than take away the ability for all to send. |

"-ish"
| My .02 L$ on group notices: It's always been considered rude and inappropriate to advertise events or sales for one group via another unrelated group. At least in my world. I've kicked people from groups for it, and left other groups because of it (including the use of friends lists to advertise your event). Like someone else said: if I want to hear about your specials or your DJ events, I'll join your update group. The SLU community is tied together by this board, for the most part. I see nothing wrong with people sending free gifts to SLU members, or even promoting SLU parties through the group, but that should be where it ends. That said, I think every other group I've ever started or belonged to only allowed officers to create notices. I've seen what happens when notices were available to everyone, and it wasn't pretty. If nothing else, officers reduce the number of people who could potentially spam the group - plus they can be demoted easily without completely kicking them from the group. At some point I hope Cris sees the wisdom in giving Create Notice rights to officers, along with the clear directive to only send notices related to SLU events. I don't see how that could become much of a problem. And chat: I like seeing SLU chat when I'm on. Usually you guys either tell me about a cool sale on shoes or you're making me laugh. That's what you're there for - to entertain Cindy! |

Unless this has changed, group notices count against your offline queue, as well. As someone whose IMs cap pretty easily, I avoid ANY group that sends group notices more than twice a month. My life is much easier when I can respond to IMs straight from the communications window without having to go root through my gmail and look up all the people whose IMs overflowed the queue.

Business: ANOmations Blog Entries: 16 XBOX Leaderboard: 22nd | Ok, a little follow up on this now that I am settled. It is a shame that it was necessary to restrict the group, but I suppose it is to be expected when the site reaches a certain size (and you ban enough people). I do want to clarify that I made a quick list of people to initially be officers. I was preoccupied with the move so I closed the group and added a couple of officers, and gave Joshua a list of the rest of the names. If I overlooked anyone, I'm sorry. If you would like to be an officer, please let me know. As far as the notice situation, for now, they will remain officer only. I will change that eventually. The main reason for this decision is that I did receive a lot of complaints about constant group notices. Yes, you can turn them off, but then you miss all of them. In the meantime, if you do want to announce something, contact an officer that is online. I will leave it to their discretion for now. Please remember you can also use the event forum here to announce events. Finally, if you are not in the group and would like to be, simply IM an officer that is online to add you. Thank you to all those who are already part of the group, and to the people who have volunteered to help with the changes to the group. |

Business: Madhu's Cafe Blog Entries: 3 | Thanks, Cris. Just to be clear - not to harp on things but because I don't want to annoy anyone - what is the policy on announcing events in group chat (as opposed to notices)? And to everyone, I apologize for the couple of times I used the notices to announce my regular events. I assumed it was acceptable because others had done it, but I didn't mean to annoy anyone. |

Business: Desperation Isle Estates | [Note- this is not directed at Madhu or any other individual; it is my general opinion on the matter.] I don't like disabling group notices, because as mentioned, you end up missing important/relevant announcements. I don't think an SLU-devoted group is an appropriate place for notices about clubs and whatnot. SLU does have an events forum, which is the best place to list upcoming events, for people who are interested in that sort of thing- because people who don't want to see it just won't look at the threads. Also, if you want to announce an event that's actually in-progress, just announce it in group chat; there's nothing wrong with that, and even I sometimes appreciate the heads-up. But group notices are invasive and they clog up the inboxes of people who are offline. Unless the announcement is administrative or has to do with an actual SLU-sanctioned event, it's spam. I only bother mentioning this because I know there are others who feel the same way, and they usually don't speak up. They're more likely to just silently quit the group when they get fed up with the spam, which ultimately defeats the purpose of having the group to begin with. |
