Well, I was really upset at someone who is no longer on SLU. but I was feeling harassed and angry. The last time I got fed up with his-or-her treatment of me, I went through, deleted my shortcut to SLU, disabled instant messaging, and set myself as "invisible", so that I could hopefully avoid any further drama should I occasionally pop in to check the snapzilla forum or read announcements... since this person was seemingly omnipresent, and had nothing better to do all day long.

So, I disabled it. And I've just not bothered flipping it back on, now that said-person is no longer here, and I've returned to posting.

That's the thing though, it doesn't work on me. Invisible names appear in the active list and also in threads for me, the invisible names are just shown differently. That is how I realized so many people were invisible.

It's a privacy thing. I don't want everybody to know whenever I'm browsing the site, which post I'm reading, which post I'm responding to, whose profile I'm reading, when I'm looking at the chat window, etc., etc., etc.

Although I'll often become visible if I want to partake in chat.

I'm not embarrassed by my invisibility in the slightest.

In fact I wish there was an easier way to toggle it for when I'm feeling sociable.

It was obvious to me that you would know, you being moderator an' all. Hell, even if vbulletin didn't tell you who was online, it wouldn't be difficult to guess from the server logs.

Im invisible most of the time because I verge on the psychotic about my privacy, if I want people to know what Im reading or doing Ill tell them. Conversely Im not overly interested in what others are reading or doing. If my curiosity is ever piqued I just ask them.



I also have to step away from the computer at short notice and dont log out, sometimes for hours if a family problem arises. I wouldnt like ppl to think that I was reading a 2 post thread for 3 hours

I knew there was an invisibility feature (it does actually ask you if you want to be visible or not when you register) but I don't think I have much use for it. I'm not hiding from anyone, and I have no shame about how long I'm here (otoh just cos I have a tab open doesn't mean I'm necessarily reading - I often have half a dozen other tabs open as well, plus photoshop, plus SL itself. And I might not even be at the keyboard.

I don't use invisibility - I like to pretend that often I'm the only one here and the rest of the posters are some AI experiment (with more emphasis on the artificial than the intelligence ) which helps support my psychcosis that none of you really exist, other than as special routines in the master program.

But seriously, I don't use it because I don't see it as important - I have seen cases in some of the Flame threads where one antagonist has mentioned (or even goaded ) another antagonist as lurking in the thread because of their online presence - I suppose if I was more confrontational then it may be useful to hide ones online presence .

Wow. It never occurred to me that I could be invisible, or that other people are sometimes. You learn something new every day.

So the reason I'm not using it is that I didn't know you could, but I don't think I will in the future either. I don't mind people seeing what I'm up to, or how long I'm here (answer: far too much). Although as others have said, I often have tabs open for hours without looking at them.
