Based on Malachi's test (using the same browser version as Bard), I'd say that's what's happening in their version of IE7.

I'm assuming that's the latest version for XP because the version I have installed on Vista doesn't freeze when the page is still loading.

Thanks Cris, and all. I didn't mean to crab about it as much as I did. I promise that henceforth and forever more I will assume that any such difficulties with SLU are on my side of the wire, and will deal with them accordingly.

Part of my problem is my own subborn attitude and technical laziness. I'm like my dad 40 years ago, slamming the top of the TV (a blonde wood Magnavox black-and-white swivel base) and cursing instead of going to the Thrifty drug store, buying a new vertical hold tube and popping the thing in (like we used to be able to do back then).

Bard, I don't think you said anything out of turn. You were as charming as ever.

Hopefully the next IE7 patch for XP will fix the issue....

Oh, that was not directed at you, actually - just the frustrating nature of technology and the weird little problems that come up. Believe me, this site has not been without its problems - I went nearly insane trying to track down the reset issue that turned out to be a bad hardware firewall and nothing on my server.

I am telling you though, give Firefox 3 a try - hell even the IE 8 beta is much faster than IE 7. It is not perfect, but the speed difference alone between it and IE in the way it renders pages is worth it, let alone all the other little usability improvements that become difficult to go without once you get used to them. One thing that is different about SLU is that the site is pumping out a tremendous amount of HTML to your browser, between all of the avatar images, signatures, giant posts, embedded videos, etc, plus all the underlying Javascript code that runs a lot of the features. Having a browser that processes all of that as fast as possible is key. IE 7 is way behind the curve in both HTML rendering and Javascript performance and is going to make for a lesser experience.

Ok well I thought i was fixed, but..... I press 'agree' 'disagree' or 'groan' and all is normal, but as soon as I press 'laugh' I get taken to that page again!

Obviously no one else is having this problem so maybe my computer really is emo.

There *may* be something wrong with the way the javascript for the laugh button is being rendered on your PC, or maybe the cached source for it is corrupted.

Code:
www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/clientscript/post_laugh.js

Try clearing all of your "Temporary Internet Files" in IE7 - Tools/Internet Options: Browsing History section - "Delete..." button, then under Temporary Internet Files click the "Delete Files..." button.

In Firefox - Tools/Options/Advanced/Network Tab - Offline Storage section - "Clear Now" button.

Then restart the browser and try the laugh button again.

That worked! I'm free to laugh once again!

Thanks

I started using Firefox instead of IE last night because I couldn't even type out a post. With Firefox, it's much better, but I'm still having some issues with pages taking awhile to load, random page freezes and also, it's not making me any more lucid or smarter when I post, which kind of pisses me off.

That sounds like problems with your network connection which you can't do much about except switching from WiFi to wired, or malware for which there are the free tools:

The home of Spybot-S&D!
AVG Free - Download antivirus and antispyware software for Windows XP and Vista

Many people find that running both checks is more effective than either one alone.
