yah

I use the last version of Netscape from the AOL control of it.

it works fine.

But I am on the lookout for a time when it doesnt ...

like say some vertical ad appearing in the middle of the screen where it should not have.

Netscape is no longer secure. You're best bet is to use Firefox...

It's a lot friendlier, is way more secure, it updates itself, uses less resources than Netscape, crashes way less, has a zillion plug-ins, a lot of themes (skins), etc. The list of goodness goes on and on.

Before you make the switch, don't forget to export your Netscape cookies and bookmarks to your desktop or a backup/archive folder so you can import them into Firefox and not loose anything.

Btw, my wife and I both use the AOL client, and most of the time it works fine.

what do you mean by secure?

I have a firewall , virus scanner, spyware scanner, and so on ..

I have Internet Explorer when my husband uses that I get far more spyware items than when I use Netscape -- where I get zero.

Or do you mean Netscape no longer gets the security updates?

I think he's saying Firefox is more secure than Netscape as Netscape no longer has security updates.

Awww. Actually SLU is the only website I visit where I actually don't use adblock, and actually do click-through some of the ads. What can I say.... I hate shopping in RL but I like shopping in SL.

When was the last time Mosaic had an update? '96, '97?

Good golly Flip, you're showing your age.

This is the first time I've seen Gopher mentioned since '95.

I didn't think that the Gopher protocol was supported by anything anymore. Are there any other sites besides some universities (Columbia for one, U. of Waterloo?) and old some VMS installations that still have Gopher servers?

IE stopped supporting it in 2002, and I tried it with Firefox and it failed, but that may be my company's firewall that prevented it. Have you tried an old copy of Mosaic with Gopher? According to online documentation, current browser support is, "moribund".

lol- this thread is so timely. I just looked up Netscape today so I could indulge in nostalgia- I had forgotten what the old logo looked like which was a bit scary 'cause I spent so much time staring at it:

Now I'm thinking about Veronica and Jughead. Thanks, guys.
