as a kid my mum always gave me a whole apple to eat.. you know just bite into it and eat it (after washing) if i do this in front of many of my friends.. they get a shocked look on their face .. like they want to say...
WTF are you doing.. peel that apple.. cut it up.. and share it with 9 other ppl FFS.
That's interesting how we take for granted things that we might consider ordinary on this side of the world, but are seen as special treats or luxury items elsewhere.

It might be a bit tricky at first but once you get the hang of it, it's super easy and most folks have the basics of white sugar, butter and cream laying around .. and it's sooo good lol.

I wasn't craving anything until I read this thread -- now I am dying for honeydew melon with poppyseed dressing -- and cherries.

Why is fruit so expensive in Japan? In Minneapolis, 1500 km from any coast we get fresh fruit in the middle of a Siberian-style winter from New Zealand and Chile and heck even Afghanistan (pomegranates) and who-knows-where-else. I'm sure its a lot easier to keep it fresh then any kind of fish you can think of...

Can't figure out the chicken thing either. You can grow those practically anywhere and feed them just about anything.

Craving a Mexican Torta (sandwich) from down the street. I have absolutely no idea what all is in it, what kind of hoagie bread it is, what the meat is or anything else about it. My Spanish is not good enough to really understand anyone at the store because they are from El Salvador. I just kind mumble "un Mexicana Torta por favor" and anxiously wait the 10 minutes it takes them to make it. I just know that it has some kind of sauce slathered on the bread and the meat is incredible and there is avocado and a bunch of other stuff and it is heavenly and I am addicted to them. Every single person I have introduced it to has said it is the best sandwich they have ever had.

Oh and they sell Coca Cola from Mexico there too. The old recipe in the glass bottles that uses real corn syrup!!!!!!!!!!!!

And damned you all!!! It is 12:38 AM night now and I am going to be thinking about this until noon tomorrow when I can finally get another one Fortunately I have a half gallon of Edy's Cherry Chocolate Chip ice cream in the freezer that I am going to go take my frustrations out on now.

I was recently reading an article about how the Mexican Coke fascination might be based on a myth.

Oh and you can take your ice cream frustrations out on this video instead if you'd like ;P

i have no idea.. a lot of fruit is grown in japan.. same with veggies..
and especially with veggies if something starts getting cheapish.. before too long youll see them ploughing the stuff back into the field just to drive prices back up again.

bananas come from philippines, peru.. and assorted other places.. theyre really cheap compared to other fruit.

chicken portions you can get anywhere.. relatively cheap .. but a whole chicken.. they only sell in non speciality supermarkets around xmas time.. otherwise you pay stupid prices from speciality shops.. or like we do.. order them through a brazilian food delivery place.. where we get out meat from too.. because its so cheap. (compared to the normal shops)
we only make an order once every 2 or 3 months and the chickens are the first to be inhaled.. (by me) so something that should be a cheap .. easy treat .. is really something special.

we also dont have many frozen or canned veggies, compared to western countries. and what we have is in very small bags and rather expensive too. Brocolli, peas, carrots/corn/peas mix, chinese stirfry mix, garlic greens...sometimes green beans or okra ..for frozen
cans.. peas, corn,tomato
canned fruit.. white peaches, yellow peaches, pineapple or a mix of fruit with nata de coco and kanten (seaweed jelly)

eku is so going to hate me now......................................

When I used to live in Texas there was a fruit stand between Aransas Pass and Rockport and the owner loved watermelon even more then I do(which is saying a lot). Every time I went he would have 15 or 20 different kinds. Forgot the name of the one but when you cut into it it was blood red and the juice was very dark. ZOMG, I would put on my painting clothes and sit on the porch and eat half of one in a sitting until I was stuffed and could barely waddle back into the house to take a shower..........................................

Next up: Fredericksburg peaches and the Blue Bell Creamery that would make fantastic ice cream once a year from them........................

Right now I'd love to be eating a freshly picked, warm from the sun, vine ripened tomato with a sprinkling of coarse salt and freshly ground pepper. Unfortunately I only have ones that are tasteless and hard as a rock.

Eku I was thinking about what you were saying regarding how expensive fruit is in Japan compared to North America, and I came across this NYT article talking about the culture of giving beautifully grown fruit as a gift in Japan that I thought was pretty interesting. Not sure if that entirely explains the price differential but I loved how they explained how some types of fruit are so tenderly nurtured like an ancient bonsai plant. Kinda cool in this era of mass produced everything ... although I still wouldn't want to pay those prices for a melon!

my wife [fiancée at the time] and the urchin visited me in california before I moved east, and were stunned when they saw that I had oranges and limes and avacados growing in my own back yard!. I was equally stunned that it was so strange for them. i took them for granted, it never occurred to me that some climates don't have that.

I miss fresh fruit growing in the back yard, but I love pulled pork sandwiches, so I try to make the best of it

For lunch I just had a chicken sandwich and some milk with coffee and some canned pumpkin (the kind that doesn't have sugar in it).

But what I really craved was a corporate sponsored happy meal with a girl toy. And extra onions.

Not sure why I am craving onions.
