WHISKEY

I thought I'd start a thread for the whiskey afficionados out there. And soon in a few months I can hopefully embark on a distillery tour of Scotland. So lets indulge. Which ones are your favorites and why?

Velm's favorite is Ardberg. Just because.

well in Scotland it's a whole other thing, a very serious thing I don't know much about.

out here i'll have a shot or two of Maker's Mark, it's smoky goodness, and great on cold winter nights.

Bourbon is whisky baby! As I understand it anyway. Just an American whisky I think. Anyway what's YOUR favourite?

no idea I shall wait for the distillery tour, and from what I learn here to make an informed decision. In college I was into Wild Turkey which is also a bourbon, or merely american whiskey.

I think when Scottish/Irish people settled in Appalachia they just started calling it Bourbon, but I don't know why.

I tend towards the Islay (eyelah) malts too.
And I once had a ridiculously priced Ardbeg 30yr old, which was bloody wonderful

The more modestly priced Ardbeg Blasda is very worth trying out.

bourbon = whiskey made in america, aged in oak barrels and made mostly from corn

scotch = whiskey made in scotland, aged in oak barrels and made from barley.

the whole "single malt" thing never made sense to me, cos I think that people... think that it means that "malt" means quality? or something. But in reality it just means the alcohol came from one distillery :/ unlike blended which is... more than one.

yey. I dont like whiskey very much, it gives me hangovers.

Wikipedia reveals that the Bourbon label arose because they started making it in Bourbon County, Kentucky.

And Ayumi, that DOES sound terrible. Hahah I think SoCo is technically a whisky-based liqueur.

The Islay malts are the dog's bollocks.

Why, liquor of life, do I love you so,
When in all our encounters you lay me low?
More stupid and senseless I every day grow,
What a hint - if I'd mend by the warning.

Tattered and torn you've left my coat,
I've not a cravat - to save my throat;
Yet I pardon you all, my sparkling doat,
If you'll cheer me again in the morning.

I understand that "better" whiskey and vodka makes you less sick and is easier to drink. More impurities in the alcohol is what makes you more sick

I love bourbon. One of my (happier) goals in life is to visit Kentucky and take a whiskey tour.

My favorite whiskey is Bushmills Irish Whiskey. I will occasionally drink single malt scotch, preferring Glenmorangie or Oban.

My favorite domestic whiskey these days is Early Times, a Kentucky Whiskey. (The Early Times whiskey sold in the USA is not technically bourbon, although the stuff they export is.)

BTW Lily, the Uisge Beath in Woodlands road in Glasgow, has an excellent gantry, and they do a platter thing where you can sample six malts at a time.

I took Flipper and Jen there when they were over.... and I got the distinct impression they enjoyed it

Yay! I love this thread already!

A year and a half ago I moved from northern california (wine country) to Louisville, Kentucky (bourbon country). A $8 bottle of napa shit wine costs $20 here, I found to my dismay, but boubon is cheaper than tapwater so i made the switch and have never looked back that I remember From what I'm told (and everybody talks bourbon here, from the hobo in front of the convenience store to the presidents of banks), the limestone-infused water is what makes ours so good.

Ok bourbon vs whiskey...sorry to quote wikipedia in a response but it's accurate in this case:

legal requirements to be bourbon

Here are some kentucky bourbons that i enjoy in no particular order:

Elijah Craig 18 year old reserve
it's made about 30 minutes south of me, and i like it because it's very oak-ey (as in oak-like, it doens't taste like an oklahoma immigrant). I also like it because they hand-write the barrel it came from so if you found an exceptional bottle you can go back to the same store and with some luck get a few more bottles from that barrel.

Woodford Reserve President's Choice This is made about 35 minutes southeast of me, in Versailles,KY. These people are funny they pronounce that town Ver-sails This is extremely mellow, sip it slowly enough and you don't even realize it's booze, it's just smooth.

Heaven Hill Heaven Hill is one of the 7 companies that own 90% of the bourbon in the US. They make the above mentioned Elijah Craig for example. They take their worst bourbon and just call it Heaven Hill (an interesting marketing strategy). If you know wine at all, this brand would be what you'd call table wine, this is a every day sippin' bourbon, not something to bring out for company. But at $16 per 1.75L it's a fine addition to most meals or wife beatings. *edit* I should point out that heaven hill makes an 80 proof and an 86 proof brand, and the cost between the two is about $2 for a 1.75L. Buy the 86 proof, it's a LOT better than the 80 proof and well worth the $2

I know very little about scotch whiskey, though i do enjoy glenlivet. I hope I helped with this thread, and hope it continues.

Wild Turkey 101, Jim Beam, Jam Beam Black Label, Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage 1998, and Crown Royal. I also enjoy Jim Beam Black Cherry and Wild Turkey American Honey, witch are both yummy :3

I've noticed a lot of distilleries in Scotland have restaurants or hotels. A friend told me Edradour is the nicest, who knows? And just having come from living in San Francisco and going to Napa for wine tasting, this activity when I move to the north of England sounds like a natural transition. But now I have an excuse to go to Kentucky. Just happiness and booze. I'd yay every post but that would make me look silly.

I just tried my first taste of Scotch Whiskey a little over a week ago, it was lovely. It was a shot of 21 year old Balvenie, and it was like liquid caramel and gingerbread... yum
