I like the blended Irish Whiskey.

Midleton Very Rare is my current tipple. -

I don't get it very often though, as it retails at about £100 a bottle!

Having visited Scotland a few times in the past three years, and sampled many whiskies, I think my favourite so far is Aberlour, which is a Speyside whisky. I'm also very fond of Talisker.

Famous Grouse is my favourite blended whisky.

I have to admit the Islays are the ones I don't like. I tried Ardbeg this year and it tasted like the remnants of a house-fire.

Islay malts tend to be peaty. Lagavulin is the classic example - very, very peaty.

When I was on Islay this summer, I stayed in Bowmore, and tried some of the whisky of the same name. Nowhere near as peaty as Lagavulin, but still a pleasant dram.

I also toured the distillery at Bunnahabhain, and had the dram that comes with the tour. Less peaty than Bowmore - it might be an Islay malt for those who don't don't care for the Islay malts they have sampled.

As for favorites - it really depends on my mood. Besides Lagavulin, I like Highland Park, and would certainly agree with Luc and Viv on what RLS referred to as "the mighty Talisker".

Incidentally, in countries with an "e" in the name of the country - the US, England, and Ireland - it's whiskey. But in Scotland, Canada, and Japan, it's whisky.

Edradour is a lovely place. If you decide to visit that area, the Glenturret distillery, near Crieff, could be done in the one day quite easily.

You could probably do all 8 distilleries on Islay in a fairly short time frame, too. Islay is pretty easy driving.

My husbands favourite is Jameson, from the same distillery. At least, that's his favourite that we can afford him to drink on a regular basis

/me packs his tent

It's lovely by Port Charlotte - we did have lunch there, and then went to a wee museum.

Port Ellen, of course, has 3 distilleries, and is a ferry terminal. You could probably do all three and camp in one day...do Bowmore and the Port Askaig distilleries the next day, without feeling too rushed.

Gentleman Jack.

And if you ever get to go to Lynchburg, TN, the tour of the distillery is an absolute delight. Also, Jack Daniels has a very special group called the "Tennessee Squires" that one can join by being recommended by a current member. You get a deed to a 1"x1" plot of land on the distillery site, a special gold embossed certificate, a wallet card, special discounts at the stores in the town, special tours at the distillery, access to an exclusive website, event invites, etc... it's neato.

I'm partial to Wild Turkey's Rare Breed, with a little water, in the bottom of a glass straight out of the freezer, for raised pinky drinking. But IMHO the exciting part of the price range for bourbon is the cheap stuff, and I've gotten accustomed to Old Forester for mint juleps and shamelessly mixing with cola.

You should try Laphroaig! It's just so peaty and smoky and salty and medicinal tasting. It's too much even for me.

In theory there is no English whiskey, however it's spelled. Distilling is illegal in England and Wales. That's why it's all done in Scotland. :-D

I did Glen Turret a couple of years ago and loved their whisky (for those who haven't been, it's one of the malts used in Famous Grouse). This year I did Glencoyne, and the Scottish Whisky Experience in Edinburgh. That's definitely worth a visit, I learned a heck of a lot there.

I have a nearly-full bottle of that stuff sitting in the back of my liquor cabinet. That's where it will stay until I move, or until an Islay scotch fan visits here.

This thread inspired me to go out and buy some whiskey this evening. Got a bottle of Bushmills. I was thinking of getting some Glenmorangie too, but they wanted $46 (USD) for it. That'll have to wait until another time.

I love Bushmills too, but mostly for making Irish Coffee or a Hot Toddy. But Jameson 12 is for sipping...sipping slowly, with eyes half-closed as I gaze upon Atia who is sitting by the fire with me sipping her red wine, and raising intemperate thoughts as to what might transpire before the evening ends.

Lagavulin is much more peaty than Laphroig. Laphroig is a great outdoor winter scotch
