Does anyone know what this is called?

I might have even heard of it here, but it would have been a long time ago, because I haven't had one on a LONG time.

You take a thick slice of sourdough bread and use a glass or measuring cup to cut a neat hole in the middle, so you have sort of a bread doughnut. You butter it and drop it in a hot frying pan and then you break a couple eggs in the hole in the middle. When the eggs set up enough, you flip it and brown the other side, so you end up with the fried eggs in the middle of the toast, only the egg soaks into the toast a little as it cooks.

I know there's a name for this, and I can't remember what it is. Plus, I want one.

I googled 'egg in a hole' and found this in Wiki.

Quote:
Egg in the basket is a chicken's egg fried in a hole of a slice of bread. It is also known by a large number of alternative names, examples being "frog in a log," "hen in a nest," "Rocky Mountain toast," "Soldier in a Boat," "moon egg,"[1] "cowboy egg," "egg-in-the-hole,"[2] "one-eyed monster breakfast," "hobo eggs" and "One-eyed Jack".[3] In a movie, the term "Guy Kibbee Eggs" was used.[4] In some places it is known as "toad in the hole", not to be confused with the British sausage dish. In the movie V for Vendetta, the dish was made by two leading characters, resulting in a comic reprieve.

I always just called it egg toast, but I do it with frozen waffles sometimes too (we call them just egg waffles). My son loves it, it's one of his comfort foods. A fried egg in the center of a crispy cooked (he likes them extra crispy) frozen waffle with syrup drizzled over.

edit: Ahh I see others found names, nvm.

I've always heard it called Toad in a Hole. No idea what toads have to do with it though.

I swear I thought I answered in this thread already and my post just isn't there. Weird.

Thank you all. It was driving me batty. I did it with a slice of sourdough about an inch thick and the hole held two eggs. It was all fried golden brown and crispy with runny egg yolk in the middle. Pure, Grade A awesome.

I like Frog in a Log. That will make my kids laugh when I make it for them.

I always called it "egg in a basket" or "eggy in a basket" -- you serve the bread from the circles you cut out of it as a kind of "lid" on top of the egg.

It's delicious -- it's taken me a little bit of practice to perfect, but I've learned. It's like the perfect breakfast (there are lots of perfect breakfasts, but this is one of them). I like it with rye (but I like everything with rye).

I don't think I've made one of these in years, and now I'm going to have to. Amazingly good and terrifically simple never really had a fancy name for it. egg in toast. egg in hole, whatever works.

5 "yays"

Hubby calls it House Annie Eggs. IHOP calls it Eggs in a Basket. It all depends on where you grew up. Until I met him, I'd never had anything like it.
