| Hi gang, I've been trying to establish if soy milk is indeed better for me than cow's milk. Going through the internet briefly, I've seen arguments for soy milk being unnatural and needing to be fortified to make it nutritious, to cow's milk actually causing osteoporosis and breast cancer (presumably because of hormones given to the cows). I am not a vegan and am not lactose intolerant, and its not a taste issue. I need a good, nutritional argument to say "this is why I should put soy milk on my cereal" Any thoughts? |

My Mood: | I would look into Rice or almond milk. I have made it at home in the past. My friend switched from Soy to Rice milk. I hate cows milk, cow milk is for baby cows not humans but that is another topic. I can find the recipes I used but I would try these... Healthy, creamy, yummy rice milk recipe « Only Sometimes Clever Say No to Soy Milk and Rice Milk I am not going to preach the evils of soy milk, because I think that is really a personal choice, but I wanted to make you aware of other options besides soy. |

My Mood: | I have heard that Persephone Milk is smooth and creamy, pure, wholesome, nourishing, and tastes really good. Just saying .... My kids grew up on soy milk and have never had a glass of cow's milk. We tried rice milk for a bit, but it's very sweet and thinner than soy. Almond milk was much more expensive. I agree that soy has an odd flavor, but you get used to it in a few weeks. Of course, my children, never having had cows milk, used to drink soy milk with no problem at all. We have used cows milk in cereal or cooking, but not often. I agree with Eboni. Cow's milk was intended by nature to turn a baby calf into a cow. EDITED TO ADD: I also agree with Eboni that Soy milk isn't a perfect solution either. It's really considered a "junk food" in a vegetarian diet. I really don't see a reason to consume a bunch of it either.

| witty verbage here ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | soy milk is not junk food if you make it yourself. What makes it junk food is all the sugar and other crap they put in it. But the less of that crap they put in it, the weirder it tastes. But you do get used to it. making it yourself is a pain btw. Also both of those articles that were linked talk about the evils of pre-processed buy-in-the-store soy milk -- the same is true of rice and almond milk you buy in the store. So if you want good vegie milk, you are going to have to make it yourself. Almond or soy is almost sure to have way more protein than rice milk. For a no calorie sweetener, try stevia. Stevia is a plant that when seeped in water makes the water taste like it has sugar in it. Its kind of like tea only it has no caffeine. You can get some at your local health food store -- probably dried, which is fine -- I grow my own but its a little late in the season to start that now. Take some of your water (probably half?) and seep the stevia in it before making your milk. This might take a few tries to get right. Or you can just add stevia to the grain/bean/nut and water mixture. Again it might take a few tries to get right. There is nothing wrong with any of the vegie milks except that when you buy them in the store they have "stuff" in them that make them less than healthy.

| Hmm. Maybe I should switch to oatmeal and I don't need milk for that, lol. And I do a lot of cooking and baking and regular milk, unfortunately just works better. Soy ice cream is disgusting and not for coffee (black is my choice anyway) but soy milk over cereal in the morning is actually kind of good. Maybe I've trained myself to think it is. Rice milk sounds like a luxury, however I'm guessing its readily available in Asian markets, and maybe not that expensive after all, so its worth a try.... Wouldn't rice milk be full of carbs and be more fattening? |

Slutty and Slippery
| I don't drinkn de milk mainly cos most Cows over here have a nasty habit of eating Plastic Bags. The tastier alternatives to Soy (yuck) I take are Oat & rice (both unsweeten). I prefer Oat as it works better in Hot Chocolate. Being southerner Coconut is in many products. but I do not likie them. cocnut I read, one of few plant based products with cholestrol. But strange as it may sound, I consume truckloads of Yogurt... which is of course more or less fermented cows milk.. and me dos not add de milk or any of its substitutes in me Blue Mountain. yes yes I know... snobby me |

| I tried soy milk once. Once. It was the only time in my life I considered drinking my own urine to get the bad taste out of my mouth.

My Mood: | In the European Union they have decided that only milk that comes from cows can be called milk. So soy milk should be called soy drink. What will the producer of Feta cheese think of that? 'Made from goat drink'. There's an enzyme in our stomachs that we use when we're babies to be able to digest milk from our mothers. When we get older we don't keep that enzyme except if we keep drinking milk. And I don't think the question was about taste. But I can say that if you want to try soy milk, or almond milk or rice milk, try diffrent brands. They taste very different. And it takes some time to get used to. About the health benefits. Soy gives you lower cholesterol levels. It's high in protein. And helps reduce weight. And it's better for the calcium levels than cow milk since it doesn't contain the substance that breaks down calcium. |

My Mood: | Not sure you can get Tofuline ice cream (or maybe it's called Swedish Glace there). Tofuline icecream are delicious and a lot of people here that would never drink soy milk love the taste. I've even served it to people and didn't tell them what it was. When I asked them to guess what it was, they guessed italian icecream or maybe home made icecream made of cream The vanilla type is my favorite and contains real vanilla ![]() |

Think the European Union could do more important stuff than figuring out names for stuff. What does it hurt to call things that are milk white for milk. Cow milk is for cow babies anyway. We're grownups. | |

Back, where I belong.
| Ok the Silk vanilla soy is pretty good. But regular soy milk is teh sux. As far as cow's milk: There is a USDA campaign about 1 glass of milk a day being healthy. It is cause you got calcium vitamins and all that. It is also one of the best sources of calcium with prevents osteoporisis. More milk facts. Facts about milk |
