I need to give rice milk another try. When I was younger my first roommate drank it and I remember it being good.

I buy both Soy 'milk' (Silk brand, it's actually pretty good) and cow's milk. My youngest child & I drink the soy and my husband & oldest the cow's milk. Both have the same amount of calcium and fat and are fortified with DHA. None of us drinks milk as a beverage on a regular basis really so it's for adding to coffee, cereal or for using with Carnation instant breakfast on occasion. Personally I like it in coffee although not as much as cow's milk. But since I can no longer drink cow's milk it's been an acceptable substitute for me. I note that people mentioned rice or almond milk to you instead of the soy and those are both good alternatives, however I would make sure whatever you buy has similar calcium to cow's milk if you are looking to replace it. As far as the 'nastyness' of soy milk, I would just buy a small carton and taste for yourself. There are some brands that are not 'nasty' tasting. I personally recommend Silk or 8th Continent.

Americans rarely hear anything negative about soy. Thanks to the shrewd public relations campaigns waged by Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), Protein Technologies International (PTI), the American Soybean Association, and other soy interests, as well as the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) 1999 approval of the health claim that soy protein lowers cholesterol, soy maintains a "healthy" image.

This article is written for parents who need to know the risks of feeding soy formula to infants, or soy milk and other soy foods to growing children. It's designed for prospective mothers and fathers who need to know the links between soy foods, infertility, and birth defects. Finally, it will serve anyone considering soy as a preventive for menopausal symptoms, osteoporosis, cancer, heart disease, or other ills.
Mothering Magazine Article: Whole Soy Story The Dark Side of America's Favorite Health Food

I don't buy that soy protein isolate formulas are healthy for infants. Of course, I am a strong proponant of breastfeeding and breastfed my own child, so I'm biased. In the nearly twenty years that I've been a nurse, most of which was spent in neonatal nursing, I never encouraged mothers to feed their babies soy formula. I have noticed (this is just my observation of course) that babies fed soy formula have a grayish undertone to their skin. I can look at babies when I'm out in public and tell if they're breastfed, milk formula fed or soy formula fed. Soy protein isolate has never been approved for use in the United States for use in infant formula, but because it was invented before the agency that regulates its use was formed, it was "grandfathered in".

I don't drink tons of cows milk either, but in my family, I tend toward using things like butter, milk, real sugar rather than artificial substitutes. If something requires lots of chemicals to make it edible, I don't like to feed it to my kid or the rest of the family.

Interesting regarding soy milk fed babies having a greyish cast to their skin. I had such a terrible time trying to breast feed my oldest (and believe me I tried very hard to do so) that I had to put him on formula. When the animal milk based formulas were an issue I had to put him on soy. When his brother came along I opted to bottle feed after trying once again to breast feed with no success. He too had to be switched to soy as he couldn't tolerate the animal based formulas. Neither of my children ever had a grey cast to their skin nor have they ever been plagued with the ear infections that bottle fed children are reported to suffer. I think both have had one ear infection each their whole lives, and aside from having some inherited issues they are both incredibly healthy. *shrug*

I also don't buy foods with HFCS, artificial flavors, colors or sweeteners in them, this includes the soy milk myself & my youngest use.

Eh, maybe it's just my eyes. But I can remember babysitting when I was around 12 or 13, for this one particular neighbor's baby and he was on Isomil. When ever I saw him, he just looked kind of greyish. I certainly never meant to imply that they weren't healthy. And then, in my years of neonatal nursing, it was just something I noticed.

While I am a big proponent of breastfeeding, I always told the mothers I was teaching that the most important thing about feeding was being comfortable with the method you choose.

I would like to see a trend away from soy formula and toward using formulas like Nutramigen and Pregestimil instead when infants have trouble digesting cow milk protein. I even wish formula companies would look at using goats milk as a base in infant formula. I have a friend who's son ended up on canned evaporated goats milk mixed with corn syrup and water because he couldn't tolerate any available formula on the market.

Oh no. They definitely wanted to nurse. It was the lack of breast milk coming out despite doing all the things I was told to do to get it to come out that was the issue. After kneading and attempting to express milk from my very milk-engorged and painful breasts for three days...frantic calls to a lactation consultant who could offer no personal help as she had never breast fed...and being told nastily by another lactation consultant that it should all come naturally and that I obviously was doing it all wrong...yeah, I guess I just gave up, heh.

And that was the first time. The second time I tried on my own thinking maybe they (meaning my milkjugs) would be better behaved that time around, but no. FAIL.

Maybe I should have tried popping a hole in the nipple

Have you ever read the book "Skinny Bitch"? It will make you never want to drink milk from a cow again! If you think about it... we are the only mammals that drink milk after the infant years... we don't need it after that. Plus I think soymilk tastes so much better (Low Fat Vanilla is my favorite!)

Skinny Bitch is also the only book that Jessica Alba has ever discussed reading.
