I am so easy... (Magika sale)

... and I was there. Half prize for the weekend, 99 L per color pack. And bought one? Two? No TEN hairstyles. Gah, I sometimes think sales was invented because of ppl like me.

I spent 990 L there, and guess what? I have a huge folder of ETD hairs over a year old, many of them I never worn. It was sale in Exile 2 weeks ago, I have not worn a single of the hairs I bought there. I am an idiot.

Last time magika had a 'sale' i went and spent a fortune.

The day she finished her sale she put 1/2 the hairs i had purchased (im talking 40 to 50 hair packs here) on the 10L a pack discount section

I was pissed

So now she no longer gets my money for hair until she has discounted it to 10L

Seriously, I don't think using those delete-and-report scripts is OK...they don't prevent Copybotting and basically just accuse everyone who buys from her of being potential thieves.

If you rez the hair on the ground for any reason - attach a hat, tweak a prim you can't reach while wearing, etc. - the hair screams at you, deletes the rezzed copy, and reports your name back to a database.

I love her hair, don't get me wrong, but I won't buy it anymore or wear any of the 100 or so I have in inventory. If the scripts actually did what they were supposed to, I might reconsider, but they don't. Copybot can copy worn hair, no problem, and someone determined to copy it by hand only needs to find a no scripts sandbox.

Exactly. The script does absolutely nothing, only annoys the customers, and inconveniences normal people who just want to mod their hair some.

The irony is that legal customers might get around that annoyance by copybotting the hair they bought for themselves. heh.
Or drop it into a noscript zone and delete the scripts. Seriously, the inconvenience those scripts cause is -not- worth risking disgruntling a load of customers for.

Vanity Hair (owned by Tabata Jewell) does it too Just found out when I rezzed an object from them, in a sandbox, not knowing it was UNboxed, got this lovely message:

" !VA! Come rain or shine shouts: Warning! Copyright by Vanity Hair! Rezzing this Item is unauthorized! Reporting & Selfdestructing! "

If you DON'T want people to REZ your creations, LABEL the item accordingly!! One more shop/person I won't shop from.

Looks like Atomic is using them too. I just bought their LE Look exclusive hair and the notecard says:

Quote:
IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not place this hair on the ground or it will delete itself. For the creators protection, we have placed a script that informs the designer who dropped the hair and location.
It's nice that the hair is modifiable now, but adding that script isn't any kind of improvement.

The last hair from Magika I bought was mod, so I just edited while it was on my head and deleted the script. Problem solved.

Not really. The problem for me is that she continues to use the script, regardless of the fact that it does nothing except point an accusing finger at her customer base. I'm not willing to give her, or any other creator using similar scripts, my L$ as long as that's the case.

OK, this is interesting. Apparently Sabina has been made aware of my rantiness and sent me a couple of offlines just a little bit ago. She says the scripts no longer report names to a database and, while they do still delete rezzed hair, it's mostly to 'scare' (my interpretation) the non-English speakers who have been responsible for the majority of the thefts she's experienced. In fact, there are instructions on her site explaining how to rez the hair without it deleting if you need to. To whit:

Does this mean I can’t rezz my hair?
No! You CAN rezz your hair. You just need to learn a little trick first. Wear your hair and select it while you are in edit mode. Go to the Tools menu and click “Set scripts to Not running in selection”. Now you can rezz your hair!

Now I'm not sure how to feel.

I haven't bought magika in a very long time. But I do feel for the woman, she's been nailed a few times if memory serves me correctly. You either have two choices, put a script in that screams at people and requires special ninja skills to rez on the ground OR realize that there are asshats out there and you can't let them rule how your going to do business.

Unfortunately, she picked the first one *sighs*

Honestly, the database bothered me the most. I knew there were ways around the auto-delete, but the idea of being dumped into a database of potential thieves because you didn't read the notecard or forgot about the scripts for a moment really rubbed me the wrong way. If all the hair does now is shriek and delete the rezzed copy, I could probably deal with that...it might startle people who aren't prepared, but there's no potential harm from it.

I will still refuse to give my money to any creator who is so out of touch with reality. It is no different then the asshat places that still use anti-Copybot scripts. It does not matter how good their product is.

Granted, I'm not a big hair buyer, but in the over-saturated competitive fashion market of SL, I can't believe that anyone's hair is worth that much trouble to wear.

/me grins. Okay, it's not as much trouble if you don't want to rez it. 98% of all my hair modifications is when I wear it, so that problem will not happen. If i was wearing ears all time in Sl, I would want to rez and link it to the hair. Or hats, so I could free those attachment points.

Ann, I have been very quiet in this thread, because frankly..hehe.. I had forgot that Magika had that annoying script. I am not a big Magika customer, I had 1-2 hairs from there prior to this sale. So three things happened the same time, it was sale, I saw a hair from Magika that I really liked in a picture, and I read that Magika had their hair ripped again. So I thought that I should support her a bit. For me, the major thing is modify rights. I saw it was mod, and shopped happy.

It's good that she has stopped that database thing, but I don't see the point. The ways to work around this script must be well known. Scare off a thief? Maybe, if it's their first try. Looks like worthless security, and forces her customers to edit out the scripts. I am not sure if I will support Magika next time her name appear in cases of content theft.

I don't either, but she says she hasn't had a new hair stolen since she started using the scripts, even without the database. The impression I got was that, since her usual thieves don't speak English and therefore can't understand her workaround instructions for rezzing the hair, she believes they don't know why the hair deletes itself or what to do about it when it does. But, as you say, the information is available elsewhere, so I don't know why that would be. She's also still very insistent in her belief that Copybot can't copy worn items, which runs contrary to everything I've heard.

I think it probably makes her feel like she's at least doing something, rather than just sitting back and letting the thieves take advantage of her. I don't personally see that the 'something' is particularly helpful, but if it makes her feel even a little bit empowered (and isn't labeling her customers as potential thieves), I guess that's OK.

I don't know...do Ellie's scripts use the database?

(I kid...that's entirely your decision. Just because I'm ranty about it doesn't mean you have to be, even if she does have a database.)

I know the first time I rezzed a Magika hair so I could attach a hat, it scared the living hell out of me. TBH, it made me pretty mad, but I still have a whole crapload of Magika hairs. xD

The viewer I tested copied my hair while it was worn and exported it to an xml. When I imported it, it assembled itself and then attached itself to my head, replacing the original hair.
