Problem with DrLife Vendors? + Creating an Asian Av

I've been trying to put together an alt that looks Asian without looking too anime-like.

In my various wanderings, I was turned on to DrLife for skins. Viewing their store and demos, they're quite nice, but it seems like they have only one vendor that works. All the others simply dispense demos.

Has anyone else run into the same problem? How do people buy DrLife skins?

On a side note, does anyone have recommendations for other places to look for Asian skins? I think I saw The Free Dove, Metabirds, Poco, Edo, Unique Megastore and Mamesandou mentioned in the anime avatar thread.

The other challenge I've had is creating the right shape. I'd like to work off a Mod shape, but seem to be turning up only NoMod shapes so far. Suggestions welcome.

Thanks.

Honestly, "Asian" is less about the skin, and more about the shape. I've found that the Tuli Elizabeth line does really well for Asian face shapes, as does their "Hope" line.

If you're looking for female skins, I find Fleur's Shoujo skins to make Siyu look unmistakably Asian. They're specifically shaded to have no eyelid fold and to have soft and rounded shading on the nose, and they're just beautifully done. Skin Within also has an Asian skin called Alaysia, but I couldn't get it to look quite right on my shape.

Blowpop's Mellie 2's (not even sure if they're still available, but if they are, they'll be dirt cheap) work nicely because they don't have eyefolds either, but the look would definitely be more Americanized depending on your shape

My experience has been otherwise. You do need a good shape, of course, but there's no substitute for a skin with properly textured eyelids.

funny thing tho .. in RL theres a huge biz behind the eyelid fold thing..
theres those who were born with them (god bless you mama)
theres those who have surgery
and then theres this

and this

and a million other glues, papers, picks, sticks, pinchers, prodders to achieve some semblance of an eyelid crease.. or 'double eyelid' as its called around here

I hope Mochi doesnt mind me using this here..

This is Mochi Milena using Tuli's Hope group gift. (an unmistakenly 'white' skin)

And this is me, wearing one of Tuli's Hope skins in a different makeup option.

The skin itself doesnt have any "stereotypical" asian flavoring to it. Its not oddly yellow, or squinty. The face makeup isnt caked on geisha white foundation, with heart shaped lips.. and we dont look like the dragon lady owner of an "oriental" brothel in the 1300's. And yet I would say that we both do look unmistakably asian.

gag.

Ive found the Adam n Eve Mei Li skin is good, thats the one I use now

This is another one I like from a small Japanese maker Snow Rabbit:

This one is from one of the larger Japanese makers..which I forget (im at work will edit this when I get home)

Never found a good commercial shape I liked so I made my own

Edit to add, Snow Rabbit sells mod asian shapes that are not to bad

With respect to Miriel's response later, I'm willing to say it's a combination of both and neither will stand on its own to create the desired look.

Once upon a time I thought that Redgrave's Moon looked somewhat Asian, but then I put it on my shape the comments point my look toward South American.

I suppose it'd be a lot harder to say what makes a shape have Asian features. I've tried fiddling with sliders a bunch of times and I've never been satisfied with the results.

Oh, and I'm looking for female skin/shapes... for now. At some point I'll give making an Asian guytar a try.

One of my favorite things to do in SL is to create avatars of different races.

These two are basically both Asian -- one is Southeast Asian, which I am (Thai), and she sort of resembles me (but I'm actually one of those Asians who could look like anything brown -- even Latina) and one is more obviously Chinese/Japanese.

I believe that looking "Asian" is a perfect marriage between the correct skin and shape. Remember that Asians generally have small, flat noses, a shallow bridge, and a small, full mouth.

I made these skins so I can't help you there, but I saw one at Redgrave that I liked -- "Hana".

To address the other part of this thread... I've never heard of DrLife, probably because everyone else who's tried to buy from them has run into your same problem

I did try to make my shape with Asian features, because I find small, wide bridged noses, almond shaped eyes and smaller lips beautiful. I've sort of figured she's a fourth generation immigrant or someone with some time to roast in the melting pot.

But, with Fleur's Shoujo skins she's really very Asian.

Thinking about it a bit more, I don't think it matters at all if the skin is "yellow or squinty", what's most important is that the shading be appropriate for Asian features (aka, you made a shape with Asian features and does it look good?) Thinking about what skins look best on me, I realized all of them have very soft and subtle nose shading that have no strong shadows on the bridge or near the nostrils. They also have even shading and highlight on the forehead and cheekbones, which suggest a broader face. The lips have to be soft and not enormous or pouty, with no strong shading between the bottom lip and chin. I think that's why Ayumi and Mochi had such success with Tuli's Hope skin, because it's all of those things. If you find one that has a lack of eyefolds or specifically shaded nose bridge it could just be considered a bonus I guess

All of the above were just added to my normal shape, which is a tad anime. Ethnically speaking, i guess i would say the Issigonis Makoto skin is fairly stereotypical Japanese - I don't wear this often because the creases are a tad odd on my shape (they look fine on the provided shape, however). L'Oeuf strays in to Vietnamese territory for me, and D-Skin is probably the most stereotypical asian/caucasoid mix, imo.

As for the no-crease issue, some Asians have it, some don't. It's largely a genetic difference. It does seem to me the farther north you go, the fewer creased eyelids you'll find. It has to do with muscular differences and fat ratios in different parts of the face. There tends to be quite a push culturally speaking towards having the crease, as it allows the eye to appear more open, and one can look more alert. As a kid, I was encouraged to stick tape on my eyelid to fix the one side that didn't crease properly (and still doesn't).

//Edit to say: i hadn't been to Issigonis for a while. they actually have quite a few asian skins here with varying (but very asian) features.

There is a korean surgery called ssangupul that means like.. double eyelid fold. I dont know what the Japanese or Chinese name of the same surgery is.. but I think the surgery itself is predominantly korean because of the number of Korean pop stars that get plastic surgery :X

I kinda made a rough effort once. Still sticking with Eloh's templates. The problem was the profile... I stuck the eyes out too far. (T_T)

futae i think in japanese..
or thats the slang for it ..
but a surprising amount of my friends have popped off to Seoul for a long weekend and had their eyes done.

in Korea outpatient plastic surgery is way more common and affordable than in Japan... so is the esthe (my favorite way to spend time in korea when not eating hehe)... go for sauna, akasuri and then full body esthe ... yay

oh and heres a great video to watch bwahahaha

(Kyllie i love the redgrave sakura tanned on you )

I've been messing with some different shape and skin experiments to try and get a decent looking epicanthic fold.

I don't really like the way a high number on the upper eyelid fold slider deforms the eye, so I went the other way—a really low upper eyelid fold with some skin hackery.

The downside is permanent eyeshadow (and plus eyelashes just don't go that way with an epicanthic fold)... but I'm still messing with it

I actually did this too and was really happy with the result -- I think showing more of the lower eyelid/subtle undereye circle goes a long way: it conveys a flatter cheekbone.
