Does SL fashion influence your RL style?

Ok this probably sounds a bit silly but since being on SL, I have become much more interested in fashion and style in real life. I've learnt more about what looks good with what and experiment much more, wear colours other than black and grey  and started using accessories like hats, jewellery etc. Has this happened for anyone else?

On the flipside, when I first started in SL I would wear elaborate ballgowns, roleplay costumes and the like but the more I've been here the more I look like 'me' (only much curvier than in RL, humph).

I tend to stay away from the feeds now because I was starting to look like everyone else - not that there's anything wrong with that, and I probably still do to a certain extent because I shop at very popular stores like Maitreya, ETD (oh when will you open again!), but I go more my own way now.

I understand not everyone takes the way their avatar dresses as anything 'real', or it can be total escapism for some, and I respect that. But my experience has been positive/influential for RL, and I was just wondering if anyone had experienced the same.

If I had the money, I'd dress more like I do in SL for sure. It actually got me quite interested in dressing more "goth".

Oh yeah ... money is a huge factor in hindering my RL wardrobe. I'd love to 'purchase' a few thousand pounds in RL and go crazy like I can with lindens in SL!

It's actually calmed my shopping instinct. I'm a hoarder of beautiful sterling silver jewelry and almost anything black and flowy, things which I never wear because I always fall back to my favorite few pieces or whatever is most comfortable. Being able to shop on SL has made more satisfied with what I have, and I think the last time I bought a new piece of clothing was about four months ago, and before that, almost a whole year.

As for personal style... I think I've always had a pretty solid vision of how I want to present myself, I've just gotten more comfortable doing it

I'm still spending 200$+ a week to placate my shopping addiction :/

I've actually found the complete opposite to be true, my RL fashion style affects my SL fashion style. I tend to stay away from things that I wouldnt wear in RL when I shop.

I think it's a bit of both with me - I get inspired through SL, but my RL conservatism will still influence my choices. Er made myself sound like I dress in buttoned-up cardigans now ... I just wouldn't go around in hotpants and a bikini top while shopping or dancing in either life!

This is a great question ... I wish I could dress more like Carter, but I don't have the figure to pull it off. I'm thinking about it though ... I've been thinking about getting another piercing or two, and maybe cutting off my hair and dying it magenta again, it's been a long time ...

Thread Title of the Week
I only wish that my SL style could affect my RL style. I would dress in RL as I do in SL, except for recognition that such styling would be a detriment to my RL work life.

No one in my business wants to appear out of place. Brocade coats and pants with embroidered shirts and buckled boots would make me stand out among Docker slacks and polo shirts on the same level as if I wore a wedding dress to my next staff meeting

Do it! I think one thing about SL fashion etc. is that it can be adapted to RL, even if it's just taking one element like a funky scarf or style of killer heels. I would so love the Maitreya Billow or Soho boots in RL, the search continues

SL has played a big role in continuing to stave off the fuck it impulse regarding dress that grows more emphatic with age. I pay closer attention to fashion trends, which are abundant for most any age group I'm in or in range of, because of choosing to make choices about how my AV looks.

And I can't tell you how close I've come to bringing a laptop to the hair salon to show them how I want my hair to look. I haven't yet, but I have changed to a pretty close approximation of my favorite prim hairdo.

I think hair is the one thing from SL I don't cross-over - many of the hairstyles my avatar looks nice in would look either weird on me or just wouldn't go with my hair texture etc in RL.

I love your AV's glasses, derevaun. I would so wear them in RL!

Me too. Besides the occasional costume or theme for photographic purposes etc, Max SL's clothing tastes are very heavily influenced by Max's RL clothing tastes

(which must make me exceptionally stylish in RL )

Haha, no. Well, not since my late teens (he says, wistfully, as 40 looms large on the horizon).

If I did it now, I'd be having an official midlife crisis as opposed to an unofficial one.

Ah yes, it does. I used to dress like a woodchopper (minus the security helmet and the chainsaw). I am wearing prettier, funnier clothes now, and I like it.

What? We are supposed to "grow up" when we hit 40?

I missed the memo. Righto, who forgot to hand out the memo?

How am I supposed to know I'm old if people keep forgetting this shit?

Sheesh.

Thank you.

You know, I thought about this one a bit this afternoon after you posted it.

SL gives me a bit more freedom of expression than I consider comfortable in RL, but it's a mental thing. I'm fond of a number of people who are intimately involved in fashion in SL, but I just simply have never been one to follow the concept or aesthetic that you are what you wear, and that your clothes are the ultimate outward expression of your soul, or something.

I've always felt that it is who I am, and how I treat other people, that is the "clothes" I wear. I readily confess that I'm lucky, in a sense, that my occupation allows for both a wide range and some acceptance of the less-mundane - I go from tuxedo in the evening to wearing my red high-top Chucks to rehearsal the next morning, and not many bat an eye. But SL *has* given me allowance to indulge in some costumery that I'd never pull of in RL.

In my instance, SL is still the experimental, and hasn't washed over into RL.

But I'm way past my mid-life crisis, I never went the sports car route, so... who knows?

my RL self and my SL avatar dress completely differently. The only real influence RL has is that in SL I can wear all of the stuff I could never get by with in RL, like frilly dresses and kimono, stilettos and black hair. I do spend less money in general because SL shopping can curb my shopping itch for less money.
