Buying a skin for noobs

I thought I should buy a skin, so I went to Redgrave's (?) and was confused. It just shows the faces. How much can you change about the face, hair, skin color, shape, etc? Can you buy a skin and put it on, but still have your face look basically like the face you already have and just have the rest of the skin look nicer?

And any recommendations about places to go? All I have heard about is Redgrave's. It seemed nice, but it didn't seem to have a big selection.

Last question: People say to save your look before you try another skin. Is there any easy way to do this - to save everything and then put it in a file or something while you wear the other skin?

Sorry if these are brainless questions - the store didn't have any explanations that I saw.

Thanks!

Ok, what you are hearing about is your shape, the saved slider settings you have when you go into appearance. That stays the same even if the skin changes. Type in your inventory search: worn. It will show you everything you are wearing including a little brown icon that is your shape. You can copy it and back it up.

As for trying on skins, when you get a demo, you should see the whole body, not just the face?

There really isn't such a thing as good skins for newbies except for price. Other than that it's what you like.

Popular skin places are Gala (sorry I'm a gala whore), Abyss, Nomine, Laqroki... try a bunch of demos and see what kind you like.

You generally have to change your shape, the slider settings, to match your skin. One doesn't necessarily look good on another.

Some skins are modifiable, and allow for some slight adjustments to skintone or lipstick. Many skins don't allow you to make any changes at all. You can change your shape though, it is separate to your skin (the skin is just the texture on top of your shape).

Depends on the skin. I would not choose Redgrave if you want your face to look pretty much the same as it is now - Redgrave will make you look dramatically different. Always try a demo before purchasing to make sure the skin gives you the look you want.

It really depends on the look you want to achieve. Some people like photorealistic skins, others prefer hand drawn style. I like Fleur skins for variety and value for money, they also don't seem to make your face look dramatically different. So many other good skin designers, check out the Fashion Feed perhaps? Fashion World of SL You'll see tons of different skins on there.

Yes. Go into appearance mode, and at the bottom choose "Make Outfit". You can then choose to have everything you are wearing including your skin and shape saved in a subfolder in the Clothing folder in your inventory. Name the folder to something you'll remember. Watch out if anything you are wearing is no copy though, it will be moved to that new folder.

Oh, sorry, when you buy a demo, it's like anything you buy, like clothing you can take it off and put it back on again, it's in your inventory and once you buy it, it's not going anywhere.

Generally speaking, the makeup's you buy with the skin are what you get. Sometimes they are adjustable, you can go into appearance and change the lipstick color, for instance, but mostly you get what you buy.

Hair is bought separately. I recommend ETD just because she has very good freebie hair and you can get a sense of what styles look good on you.

If you like, I will drop some of my Eloh skins and shapes on you tomorrow. They are free to download and play with in photoshop. And LMs to other places.

Thanks, Io. The "worn" suggestion is what I was wondering about - I didn't know how you could save everything at once.

I didn't try on a skin. I thought the "demo" sign meant that the picture was a demo and that it would look different on your avatar because you could change things - with these replies I realize you can't change as much as I thought. I also thought it was like clothes - you can't try them on (or is that wrong?). I'll try them on before I buy.

Thanks!

Arilynn, will you be in SL tonight? I'd be happy to take you to a few places to try on some skin demos to see what looks best with your shape.

Thanks, Stephanie. I'm glad I didn't buy one. I thought you could change more things - like skin tone and eye color - and I didn't like everything about any one skin.

Depends on the skin. I would not choose Redgrave if you want your face to look pretty much the same as it is now - Redgrave will make you look dramatically different. Always try a demo before purchasing to make sure the skin gives you the look you want.

That's good to know about Redgrave. I didn't like any of the Redgrave faces enough to want one without changing it. And I'll try on the demo first.

I will check out the link - thanks! The one person I talked to said that Redgrave if the only one I should consider. Now that I saw the store (which is very nice) I don't know why a person would think its selection would suit everyone. I don't know what style I want. I like my noob skin , but I don't know if it looks right with some revealing clothing. I'll look and see the variety available

Yes. Go into appearance mode, and at the bottom choose "Make Outfit". This is probably the same as doing Io's "worn" suggestion, right? This is all good to know - I need to organize my clothing inventory before it takes over the world. And thanks for the warning about "no copy" - I didn't think about that and know some things I have are "no copy".
Thanks!

Hi, Brig. I will be in SL tonight. I am supposed to go to a pajama party, but the club I go to is run by people in Germany - they never give the time on their notices so half the time the party is over when I log on. So I might not go to the party tonight. If not, I would really appreciate the help. Thanks! I don't want to pay a ton of Lindens for something that is not right, and I'm not sure if I completely appreciate all the details about buying the right skin.

Thanks, Brig!

Despite popular belief there are some quite nice freebie skins. Milky9 springs to mind as the place I got a lot but last night I discovered a freebie shop in I believe Colona that seemed to have an even wider range. Some not-too-bad hair styles too.

Add: Oh and SkinWithin was doing their Allegra Skin free for newbies if you get there in time.

Arilynn, I would recommend Tete a Pied, Pixel Dolls, or Nomine for skins; Citizen Politik is rather photosourced and is rather yucky in my eyes, but I know friends who swear by it. Brig has very good taste, of course, and I'm sure she'll know exactly what to do.

Thanks, Charlemagne. Does "rather photosourced" mean it looks too realistic?

And it's all about personal taste and what *you* want your av to look like. Some of the skinwhores in this forum (I love you all ) change their av's skin more often than their socks, others (like myself) can't bear to change. You're young in your SL experience! Experiment! Try different things!

Also, post pix.

Handpainted (my preference) is made in Photoshop entirely-- photosource is combining RL images into the mix. It can look horribly crappy with the wrong shape, in my experience.

Fleur had a freebie pack of skins that are really nice quality. If your going pale, fair, to light most skin makers do well.

Now if you're going for med - tanned and dark tanned.. then you'll have a hard time finding good skins.

You also mentioned changing eye color. Eyes are sold completely separate from skin. You can change the color by buying different sets of eyes - they cannot be changed via the sliders.

I suggest Miriel's for eyes.

I have very recently come to the same conclusion. Though I have some beautiful looking photo skins they are a devil to get just right in shape, maybe the 'real' contours just not being easily mimicked by the sliders whereas the drawn skins being 'flatter' map better?
I spotted a photo skin in Colona last night that was notoriously misshapen .. methinks my next project

I change my shape all the time. What is the fun of inflatable breasts if you can't do this? Also, some outfits look better with different sized hips, shoulders, legs, etc.

Are these basic kind of changes possible with most skins or would they make the skin look odd?
