Internet search giant Google has lifted the lid on its operating system, known as Chrome OS.
The free and open source system is initially aimed at low-cost netbooks and does away with many of the features of a traditional programme.
All programmes are designed to run in a web browser and all the user's data is stored on Google's servers.
Engineers from the firm said the first computers running the system would be available before the end of 2010.
"We are trying to offer a choice for users," said Sundar Pichai, vice-president of product management, during an event at the firm's headquarters in California.
"This model of computing is fundamentally different."
The event follows the recent launch of Microsoft's Windows 7 and Apple's operating system upgrade, Snow Leopard.

On one of the Galapagos islands whose finches shaped the theories of a young Charles Darwin, biologists have witnessed that elusive moment when a single species splits in two.

In many ways, the split followed predictable patterns, requiring a hybrid newcomer who’d already taken baby steps down a new evolutionary path. But playing an unexpected part was chance, and the newcomer singing his own special song.

This miniature evolutionary saga is described in a paper published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. It’s authored by Peter and Rosemary Grant, a husband-and-wife team who have spent much of the last 36 years studying a group of bird species known collectively as Darwin’s finches.

The finches — or, technically, tanagers — have adapted to the conditions of each island in the Galapagos, and they provided Darwin with a clear snapshot of evolutionary divergence when he sailed there on the HMS Beagle. The Grants have pushed that work further, with decades of painstaking observations providing a real-time record of evolution in action. In the PNAS paper, they describe something Darwin could only have dreamed of watching: the birth of a new species.

It's common knowledge that Scotch is best served ice cold.
But this particular cache of vintage McKinlay is a little more chilled than originally planned.
A whisky company has asked a team to drill through the Antarctic ice cap to find a lost cache of vintage Scotch that was left there nearly a century ago.
The drillers will be trying to reach two crates of McKinlay and Co. whisky that were shipped to the Antarctic by British polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton as part of his abandoned 1909 expedition.

Enlarge More ice, please: Ernest Shackleton's abandoned hut at Cape Royds, Antarctica, near where the cache of whiskey is believed to have been buried

Shackleton and his team might have been expected to drink every drop of whisky they could lay their hands on during the near-disastrous expedition - but somehow these two cases have apparently survived.
Whyte & Mackay, the drinks group that now owns McKinlay and Co., wants to conduct a series of tests that could decide whether to relaunch the now-defunct Scotch.
Workers from New Zealand's Antarctic Heritage Trust will use special drills to reach the crates, frozen in Antarctic ice under the Nimrod Expedition hut near Cape Royds.
Al Fastier, who will lead the expedition in January, said restoration workers found the crates of whisky under the hut's floorboards in 2006.

At the time, the crates and bottles were too deeply embedded in ice to be dislodged.
The New Zealanders have agreed to try to retrieve some bottles, although the rest must stay under conservation guidelines agreed by 12 Antarctic Treaty nations.

Fastier said he did not want to sample the contents.
'It's better to imagine it than to taste it,' he said. 'That way it keeps its mystery.'
Richard Paterson, Whyte & Mackay's master blender, said the whiskey could still be drinkable and taste exactly as it did 100 years ago.
If he can get a sample, he intends to replicate the old Scotch and put McKinlay whisky back on sale.
'I really hope we can get some back here,' he was quoted as telling the Daily Telegraph.

'It's been laying there lonely and neglected. It should come back to Scotland where it was born.
'Even if most of the bottles have to remain in Antarctica for historic reasons, it would be good if we could get a couple.'

The Griffith Observatory Sky Report
Anthony Cook
Astronomical Observer
This is the Griffith Observatory Sky Report for the week ending Wednesday, November 18. Here is what’s happening in the skies of Southern California:
The annual Leonid Meteor Shower reaches its traditional peak between midnight at 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 17 as seen from the west coast. About one Leonid every two or three minutes is expected. The earth may pass through enhanced streams of particles during the following afternoon, possibly providing Asia with an even better show, and may make the shower worthwhile to watch again from here between midnight and 5 a.m. on Wednesday morning, the 18th. Remember that urban light pollution will reduce the actual numbers of meteors that can be seen.
Jupiter, in Capricornus the Sea Goat, is high in the south during twilight. The giant planet appearings as a brilliant yellow star and sets at about 11:00 p.m. Jupiter is now the featured planet through Griffith Observatory’s telescopes.
Rust-orange planet Mars, in Cancer the Crab, rises in the east-northeast at 10:20 p.m. It is 74 degrees high in the southeast when dawn starts, at 5 a.m. Its position high in the sky will make it a good telescopic target from now until about March next year.
The ringed planet Saturn appears as a golden-hued star in Virgo the Maiden. It rises in the east at 3:15 a.m. and is 33 degrees high at the start of dawn. Its rings appear narrow through a telescope, tilted only 4 degrees from edge-on.
The moon is visible only in the early morning hours in waning crescent phase. It is last seen on the morning of Saturnday the 14th. On that date, at 5:20 a.m., it is only 10 degrees high in the east-southeast, and is only 4 degrees above Virgo’s bright star Spica. The moon is new on Monday morning, November 16, and returns to visibility in the evening sky on the following Wednesday.
If the weather in Florida gives it a break, the Space Shuttle Atlantis has a chance to launch on its STS 129 mission to the International Space Station this week. The launch can be seen live on NASA TV, available over the Internet on NASA’s Web site, NASA - Home. If it goes as scheduled, the launch will take place on Monday, November 16 at 11:28 a.m., PST.

Free public viewing of the sun during the day and of the moon, planets, and other celestial objects at night, is available through Griffith Observatory’s telescopes until 9:45 p.m., every night–weather permitting–except Mondays, when the Observatory is closed. The next public star party, held by members of the Los Angeles Astronomical Society and the Los Angeles Sidewalk Astronomers, will be held on the Observatory’s front lawn on Saturday, November 21. For Observatory information, please visit our website, Official Site: Griffith Observatory Los Angeles, CA, or call (213) 473-0800.
