Hola! Ciao! Boas Tardes!

With roughly 60% of Residents based outside of the United States, localizing the Second Life experience is an important area of focus for us, so we’re pleased to share two pieces of good news on that front.

On Wednesday, we launched SecondLife.com in three additional languages: Portuguese, Spanish, and Italian. We now have websites localized in English, German, French, Japanese, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese, and are looking forward to continuing to grow this list.

Additionally, as you may have seen, we’ve recently signed an agreement with Gisland (actually, you may have seen it called Dragonfish or 888 - 888 Holdings is the public limited company, Dragonfish is the brand name of 888’s B2B Division, and Gisland is the operating company). This is a company with a great deal of experience in providing secure payment processing, andthis relationship will enable us to begin accepting payments from Residents outside the US in a broader range of currencies than we currently do.

We're working together with Gisland on a cashier interface and other tools that will give Residents more than 20 payment options and make it easier for Residents to pay in a wider range of native currencies than they can now. Gisland will also help us implement appropriate anti-fraud measures as we expand these payment options, and will help us to provide payment-related support in seven languages. We’re not yet ready to launch these new services, but more payment options are coming, and we think it will make things easier for Second Life Residents outside the US. More to come, and we’ll keep you posted.

.

Grid liberal or conservative ~ which? (absolutely not about RL politics).

I've brought this up on official forums before, and the response was... well, I won't say flawlessly intelligent, but it was perhaps a cut above...

I've brought this up on official forums before, and the response was... well, I won't say flawlessly intelligent, but it was perhaps a cut above normal. Yet it was a really restrained discussion, and I'm wondering how much was self censored due to the rules over there. Hence bringing it up here.

Always there is a danger in categorising people in any way, shape or form... but sometimes it's handy for people to categorise themselves (i.e. form groups) in order to promote common agendas.

And I've been giving a lot of thought to what those agendas might be.

Time after time, post after post, action after action... it seems that there definitely *are* agendas out there; either purely philosophic or possibly for monetary gain, or lulz, or what have you. Some pure of heart; some less so.

I've often wondered about how wonderful it would be if people quit pussyfooting around sometimes, and just came out and stated whatever their agenda was, or itch they really needed to scratch in a plainspoken and sincere manner. There's no example I wish to make here; but we've all seen this sort of thing all over the internet.

And this is in *no way* about real world politics. I don't even want to discuss real world politics in this thread ~ it's irrelevant. For instance, you could have the last name of Cheney, work for Halliburton and invest heavily in tobacco stocks only, but in no way would you be called "conservative" on the grid if you ran with the PN. Or sometimes even the most effusively liberal, bleeding heart liberal schoolmarm in real life turns out to be the most pro~business, ban 'em all, hang~the~crooks~high virtual dressmaker ever seen.

All that said, this is sort of how I see the world:

:tophat: Grid conservatives: Usually status~quo loving business types such as land barons, content creators and so forth. Stability being more important than revolution; happy customers and a good business environment being seen as key to having a world at all.

:loveflag: Grid liberals: Usually free expression types, more interested in the transformative properties of a new frontier, and those looking ahead to a time when traditional business and social roles have moved on to something better. Freedom and innovation on both business and social fronts is the very raison d'etre of having a world at all.

:yarrr: Grid libertarians: Can be either a bit liberal or conservative, but generally guided philosophically by the philosophy of "what I do is absolutely none of your business" overall. These types might be seen trying to block additional restrictions or policies most of the time.

:star: Grid authoritarians: Can be either a bit liberal or conservative, but generally guided by a sense that "yes, what you do *is* my business" ~ for example, if there are enough people out there gambling, ageplaying or whatnot it would put the whole grid at risk. These types might be seen petitioning service providers to enact more rules or social policies.

* * * * *

Examples.

Well, I can't really speak for anyone, save myself. I'm fairly pro business and pro content creator; more conservative than liberal on the grid. I don't run with any griefer types really, and if the grid ran just exactly as the real world did, I'd be fairly cool with it. This doesn't necessarily match my real world politics, but all that belongs in a different subject area and is irrelevant anyway.

So... tell me who are you?

I really wanna know.

Started this as a new thread, altho I originally wanted to put it into the SL Shoppnig Site Tracking one..but it just seemed too off-topic.

Anyways,

I just wish somebody would give the non-xstreet sites a visual and partially functional overhaul :/

The only site that blew xstreet totally out of the water was OnRez, in that regard. It was so awesome and polished, so really well done and inviting on first glance.

Sorry, Slapt.me just looks...meh. It is that everyday typical three-column, edged, colored-titlebar menu-on-top layout that's been seen to death on every average cms-driven site. The first thought I had when looking at it was 'Ugh, cheap'. I just have to be honest here..it was that reflexive first-glance thing. And that initial feeling sadly transfers to the expection of content that will be seen..darn human psychology. Darn it to heck.
Meta-life looks definitely better, but it lacks a certain finishing, slightly more seperation of space. And the product categories need another level of detail.
Apez..well, the site says that more features like reviews etc. are coming, but what that site also needs is a theme set if the owner wants to keep the dark and purple around for most people. Jesus, they really do. A dark website does not make for cheery inviting shopping. Its menu system is also a little too confusing in its terms and sectioning. I personally like the somewhat original design it follows..it makes the site more unique...but the shopping section needs an overhaul.

Right now xStreet still -does- tower them in terms of visuals (in my opinion...no, really.) and usability..I really hope that changes. I really do. OnRez did it right, and I believe one thing that makes people immediately stick there was that very first important moment...that first second the site opens and you see it.
Marketing folks can sing a song about the importance of that, and it would help those sites sooo much.

Thoughts?

Sooo... my honey wanted to surprise me with an early Christmas gift - - a larger amount of rental property.

Sooo... my honey wanted to surprise me with an early Christmas gift - - a larger amount of rental property.

I know *NOTHING* about property, except that there seems to be a glut on the market right now, if what I've read here and there is right.

What he's rented is : 32,769 SQM, 1875 Prims, at a cost of $95.00 USD per month. It's Mature, island property. The owners refuse to do any terraforming whatsoever. A goodly amount of the property is 'usable water,' which does not have value for me as I don't do water craft type things. Other sections have water features such as pools, streams, waterfalls, etc, impacting the 'buildable' space.

He went with this property because we've rented from the same company for 6 months, has a rapport with the rental agent, and this is another of their locations. It was a little bit of a spur of the moment thing, wanting to surprise me by the time I got home from work.

Question #1: is this a good deal and am I being an idiot to worry?

Question #2: If this is NOT a good deal, can anyone point me in another direction? He's said that if I'm not 100% happy, we'll find something else, and just pay rental tier in both places until our month is up at the spot he grabbed today.

I'm feeling anxious and semi-homeless, because if we're changing spots, I don't want to set down stuff.

Important things to me in land in order of importance?
- Mature or Adult rating
- Prims (happy to trade space for more prims)
- beach environment (just bought a lot of beach furniture)

Any help / suggestions would be *greatly* appreciated.

Please read on to learn more about Winterfest land auctions, how to submit content to the Winterfest Destination Guide, and a little bit more about Winterfest traditional events on their way!

Winterfest Shops

Linden Lab is pleased to announce Winterfest Shops! To complement the overarching Second Life Winterfest, we’ve created a small number of parcels available only via the Second Life Land Auctions page starting on Saturday, November 28th and ending December 5th. Auctions for parcels on Dasher, Prancer, Donner, Blitzen, Eggnog, and Turtle Dove will start at only L$1. In order to participate in auctions, Residents must have a premium account at least 14 days old. For only the price of a winning auction bid and no recurring land fees, you can have your parcel until February 26th--about 80 days!!

If you win a parcel at auction, you may open your shop and hold events and gatherings on your land. Winterfest Shops merchants are more than welcome to direct shoppers to their larger outlets in other Regions (”If you like what you see here, grab this landmark and visit my larger store!”). At the four corners of Dasher, Prancer, Donner, and Blitzen is an iced-over pond where a spectacular "Skating Under the Stars" event will be held from December 21st-23rd, making it a prime location for Winter themed fun!

Winners are allowed a rental of the parcel they win, but do not own the parcel they are given use of. Land rental lasts until February 26th, 2010. After February 26th, all land will be returned to Linden Lab and all remaining objects will be returned to the winner. No adult content please. All builds must conform to our Terms of Service and Community Standards.

Don’t forget to check out the Second Life Land Auctions starting Saturday, November 28th for your chance to win! If you have more questions, check out the Second Life Knowledge Base entry at the wiki.

Winterfest Destination Guide

The Destination Guide (inworld displayed as the Showcase section of Search) has been updated with a Winterfest category, and we need your help to populate it! What are the wintertime traditions in your part of the world? If you are planning a winter extravaganza in your region that demonstrates your traditions, read on to learn how you can have your location highlighted in the Destination Guide!

Just like last year, keep these guidelines in mind when you plan and execute your winter builds: We will be looking for builds that are engaging, well made, available from December to February, and that present your regional sights, sounds and traditions of winter. We will bypass builds that are commercial in nature, so if you’re basically decorating your store for the season, that’s great, but it’s unlikely to be in the Winterfest Destination Guide. Think of your build as a gift, freely given, to your fellow Residents, not as an opportunity to sell something. You are also welcome to submit winter related events that are open to public!

As submissions come in, we will send out Lindens with snowshoes to check out the locations and bring back their recommendations for the Destination Guide, due to be populated on December 6th. While space in Showcase is limited, we will try to fit in as many submissions as we can, with potential to rotate the listings throughout the Winter season.

Submissions end on Monday, November 30th, so please check out the FAQ to learn about how to submit an entry to the Destination Guide editors for consideration. In the subject line of your submission email, please mark whether your location is a "Winterfest Event, (dates/times)" or "Winterfest Location." (Please note, not all correspondences will be met with reply.)

Winterfest Traditions

Of course, what would Winterfest be without Second Life traditions?! This announcement comes early so you can mark your calendars for some end of December fun!

On December 21st to the 23rd, get out your winter gear and join us for the "Skating Under the Stars" event at the Winterfest Shops regions, where a central bonfire will light the midnight sky and music will be provided for during select hours each day. Winterfest Spirit

In keeping with the spirit of Winterfest, it's important to remind about our previous announcement involving our partnership with Kiva.org, the world’s first personal micro-lending Website that empowers everyday people to lend to working poor entrepreneurs around the world. Content creators are encouraged to create special Winterfest Wreaths and enter their designs in the Winterfest Wreath Competition, sponsored by Linden Lab, hosted on XStreetSL.com - see the submission form here. All submitted wreaths will be displayed inworld at the region Zermatt. Though the competition ends November 23rd, all Residents will have an opportunity to purchase the six (6) winning wreaths on Xstreet SL through December 31st, 2009. All donations from sales of winning wreaths will go directly to help support Kiva's operational costs as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

At 11:19am this morning. I posted a comment to a thread on the SL Commerce Blog/Forum/Thing.

Well, *I* didn't.. but Winter Ventura did. https://blogs.secondlife.com/message/38250

At 11:19am, Meade Paravane typed in her name and password.. HER name and password.. and was logged in as Winter Ventura instead.

What happened next, was a small miracle in a weary world. Meade (or the person who owns that account), quickly noticed the issue, panicked, and LOGGED.THE.FUCK.OUT.. then IM'ed me every way she could think of.

But what if it had been someone less honest? Someone motivated more by personal gain? I have 102,558L$ on my account. With access to my web account, she could cash my money out on the Lindex, slap a throwaway paypal address into my payment info, and walk away 380USD richer.

But more than that, what if it was someone who didn't like me? with access to my web account, they could tier me down to zero, cancel my account, hell they could even "buy me an island" or 20.

What if it had been Stroker's account? Or Philip Linden? Or M? What if someone logged in as someone, and started posting threats, profanity, or child porn all over the blog, and got them banned, or worse?

This wasn't a case of someone guessing my password. This wasn't a case of someone hacking the system. This was Linden Lab's authentication server totally dropping the ball, and handing the keys to my business, my only source of income to someone who hadn't even asked for them.

I've contacted Live Help.. and they of course told me to "file a ticket". And I'm afraid that all that LL is going to do, is ban Meade for doing NOTHING WRONG, then get out their rubber stamp that says [RESOLVED].

No more using the Rainbow Viewer for slow machines on my other computer.
There's the regular viewer, there's the NEW and "improved" crappy framerate Emerald Viewer that goes down to 2fps if in a graphically intensive area with glow if I'm there for more than 10 minutes, and there's Snowglobe.

Happy happy joy FUCK! joy.

SL Blog: [BUILDING] Unraveling the mysteries of prim flicker

When two prims get too close and share the same surface space… no, they don't have a baby prim, although that'd be cute. Alas, they clash with each other and appear freaky-deaky. That's not so cute, because it can make your build look like crap. AHHH MY EYES!!!! This is called "Z-fighting", and the "Z" refers to the "depth buffer" used in 3D computer graphics – it's not just a Second Life issue.

You may've seen this and didn't know what to call it. Now, the beast has a name!

But! While a fix isn't as easy as apple pie, there are ways to keep your cool and handle this, such as resizing one prim ever-so-slightly. Wanna learn more, including why you don't see Z-fighting in "other games"? (I use that loosely, Second Life is no more a game than red represents the entirety of the rainbow.) Visit…

The Prim flicker page

^ Like many of our help articles, you can edit it and make it better. On-page discussion (which will be easier to refer to over time than these comments) has already happened, with Youri Ashton suggesting his ways to deal with Z-fighting. Add your insights – demystifying technical concepts for the masses is always endearing – and they could make it into the official help article!

Onwards, brave builders!

I am thinking about possibly making a second version of Robert Jung, a bit older, perhaps in his mid 40s. I want him to still look like me, but just older.

I am also thinking of creating a separate male alt, perhaps in his mid to late 50's and perhaps a bit heavier than Robert.

Most SL shapes and skins seem to be intended to look young. Can anyone recommend more "mature" looking shapes and skins? Thanks.

Hair too. Robert will stay bald but the alt would like some salt and pepper hair.
