I want to try my hand at some for the first time but I am a little bit shy about my artistic abilities. I know that they are 2.5"x3.5". I don't know if I can find anything in that size, or I'll have to make them.
Anyway are there any tips, like what is the best type of glue to use? What kind of cardstock? Things like that....

Some of the best ATCs I've made have been from reading people's ideas. Just google ATCs and you will get a wealth of information. And I've always just used regular old Elmer's glue, never seems to be an issue. Here is a snippet from a website:

"It is best to use cardstock, watercolor or acrylic paper as the base of your card. Of course, anything goes as long as it is not so thin that it cannot be considered a "card" and not so thick that it changes the dimensions of the card. It is possible to use thin cardboard or paperboard. Another great way to start making ATCs is to use a standard deck of cards or a set of trading cards and modify those."

If you are really worried, I would be willing to do a private swap with you so you can practice.

Sounds good, I like mixed media so I'll be giving that a go then. We can set it up formally to increase both our stats

Now you can! Swap-bot has at least 10 ATC swaps a month. Also modified matchboxes (another thing I want to try) and a variety of handmade swaps.
