Camping crafts and activitys?

Ok so in a few weeks in May our campround we stay at opens up and I'll be spending more time sitting around my camper than in SL. Just wondering if anyone had any cool camping type crafts or activity's to suggest. Like along the lines of making fire starters out of egg cartons dryer lint and wax kinda projects. We are there a lot so the more ideas the better. We don't really do traditional vacations because this is what we love and our kids live for. So share some camp or fire ideas!

I took four books on the last family camping weekend.

I finished three.

You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things. Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

I usually like to play sltrivia and see if any fruits have rezzed on the money tree....

Oh, you mean really. Uh, the things I like to do while camping require photo ID to purchase, unless they're sold by the gram.

Books are good tho! Books and lots of birth control.

We do a lot of board games, and ride a old golf cart all around. Golf carts are LOTS of fun to drive.

I don't know how old your kids are, but my son always enjoys being the hike leader. I give him a disposable camera and tell him to shoot away with it. Then he leads the hike - making sure everyone stays on the trail, warning us of obstacles (like puddles and rocks - imagine that, a rock on a hiking trail!). I always try to have a field guide along for id'ing weird plants and birds.

I get the strangest pictures from him. It's sort of an insight into what the world looks like from a child's perspective.

Take wax paper and make stained glass windows with an iron and interesting leaves they collect. Play a rousing game of Bean the Squirrel with a Peanut. Toss weird stuff into the camp fire to see how well it burns. (no plastic, styrofoam or egg shells. The first two are noxious when they burn and the egg shells stink!)

- Brush up on Ghost stories before you go. Tell your kids to each make one up (maybe during the car ride) but not share until you're all around the campfire.
- Don't cook your hot dogs in foil, (the skins peal and stick) Actually, might be fun for the kids.
- If the kids are bored, tell them they can make fire by twirling two sticks together. You'll be able to read an entire book before they get bored, (the fact that they will be able to see some smoke gives them hope...)
- Flower crowns.
- Bug hunting. They have to find 10 different types of bugs in a limited time period.
- Late night star gazing.
- Who giggles first. You know, you all lie down on the ground and each lay your head on the next person's stomach.
- If there's a creek nearby, have a leaf (boat) race. You can drop one of those bugs found earlier on each leaf, name each one if you like, and watch them sail off (or get caught on a log). Winner gets to eat the hot dog skins stuck to the foil paper.

I had a Nat'l Park Service ranger show my 9-year old and me how to start a fire with sticks. OMG - the labor involved in that is insane. My shoulders hurt for days. The Ranger got one going. I got two hot sticks and a bit of smoke. The Ranger said he could start two, maybe three fires a day, tops before his arms gave out.

I spend every second I can get in the backcountry, so my navigation skills are pretty good. I make the kids navigate on hikes. Give them a compass and a map and let them have at it. It's good for them. Make sure they notice things like the angle of shadows, the direction of the slope, and have them triangulate on known landmarks or identify formations on the map. If they're younger, give them some crayons and paper and have them draw a map of the campground or wherever, then follow the trail on the map. It makes for some odd hikes, but it can be pretty fun.
