RL Sculpters?

Let's try out this brandy new crafty thread!

Who sculpts? I'm curious to know what your preferred medium is, be it clay, metal, rocks, cheese wax, your belly button lint, please do share.

And pix or it didn't happen

Yes I'm replying to my own post, but I figured I might as well get my point across in the op and then talk about myself later.

I used to enjoy using clay when I loosened up and realized not everything had to be perfect, but access to a kiln is a little tricky and sticking things in your oven doesn't work as well if you're using the good clays. I went to RISD for a summer program and had this friend who was very, very rigid in her idea of what her abilities were (wouldn't try anything new whatsoever), and our crazy teacher (he was awesome) told her she had to completely leave behind her favored medium of pencil and carve a sensuous sculpture in stone. Well, she was also in my dorm, and the night before her stone project was due, all I heard was chiseling and cursing and muttering from her. So since I was all done with my own project and I wanted to help out, I came and kept her company. At some point, she wanted to show me how darn hard it was to carve stone and... well... for me, it wasn't. Frankly I think she just wasn't trying and was being a drama queen about it. But how it ended up was me realizing I really, really liked chiseling that rock, so I ended up doing most of her project for her. She did the sanding and such but I was the one who carved away the stone into a shape that she enjoyed. At the end of the summer, she just gave me all of the stone and carving tools and told me I could keep it.

So here are some of my stone sculptures

In soapstone

In alabaster

Befooooooore...

After!

These are a little blurry since they're done with my old camera (these pics are about three years old). But yeah, it feels nice to share the pretties

Oh neat! I love those pics! Was it one of those "Just lay into it and see what comes out" or did you have a specific goal in mind?

I don't sculpt but I like to play in mud. I use molds for mine though so not quite as free spirited as you are. I should give that a try!

Hopefully these fit here:

My friend, Pam (in the background) and I had to have about a baker's dozen of these done in a little under 2 months. We barely made it since it was still in the winter and the air was really wet. Kept the mugs from drying quickly and caused problems when it came time to smooth them out and prep them for painting.

Wow, those look really very crisp and clean, especially the decal. Gawjuss!! Doesn't matter if you used a mold, still looks good

I just like to lay into things, the stone normally has an idea of what it wants to be, based on the way the cleavages end up lying or where mineral deposits weaken it to make it more easily chippable. To get started, I have one motto: When in doubt, make a hole. Same goes for when I get stuck, haha.

Soapstone is very agreeable and will happily follow along with what you want to do, while alabaster is far more temperamental. It has its own idea of what it wants to be.

Thanks!! That really sounds like alot of fun!

I'll have to see what is available around here, material wise and see if I can't experiment a bit. You know...in my copious amounts of free time.
