Question Beading Madness!

I have to make something akin to a rosary. I don't want to buy one for various reasons that I am not going to go into.

The rosary is going to have to hang from a belt and withstand some high level of wear and tear. For those of you who bead, what would you suggest to use? Wire? Silk cord?

I am going to be putting some fairly nice sized stones on the rosary as well, mostly wire wrapped as well as string some bead so any and all ideas would help alot.

HALP!

geesh Verti you don't ask for much.

I'd use some sort of cloth rope -- silk, embroidery thread, ribbon, etc. Wire is going to break on you in 3 years top, less with a lot of wear and tear.

Are you thinking of beading the whole thing? I guess you'd have to with a rosary. With beads large enough to go on cloth that's going to be a lot of weight and it will lower the belt down and make it possibly uncomfortable. I'd prolly go with polymer beads rather than glass or stone just to try and cut down on the weight.

Is it an actual rosary? Like will it see prayer action and the like? Will it be fingered a lot?

Negative, it will be just for show only. It's part of costume that I am putting together (hence the hesitation to get a 'real one') so it will be looped onto my belt. Kinda like in a slip knot, so it's going to get a lot of wear at that point as well as potentially get caught on stuff as I move around.

I am planning on beading the whole thing cause there is a certain look I am going for, I have all the beads and potential findings, I am just drawing a blank on what to use as stringing material to help withstand the beating it is going to get.

If it won't be worn continuously for years, nylon fishing line is fine.

Silk cord is needed for very long wear (like a pendant I wear). If you want to use this Chinese jewelry shops (as in the ones that sell amulets) should have the right kind.

I am liking the silk cord idea more and more. I think I will try that.

Thank you!!

silk cord is more expensive and unless you go for the higher end stuff that is already on a needle, harder to work with. If it doesn't require the years of wear, I would so go nylon fishing wire or:

Accu-Flex® Beading Wire - 49 Strand - .019 Diameter - Fire Mountain Gems and Beads

I'd probably go with nylon too, but then again I've never worked with silk and am unfamiliar with its pricing.

Just be sure to post pictures, Verti!

I was talking with a co-worker who does beading as a side job and she agrees with the nylon idea as well since silk can rot over time.

Fire Mountain Gems! I love them. They get so much of my money.

I've put together a couple of rosaries, when I used to be into beading more.

I looked at this site recently, they have some really pretty crucifixes and centerpieces.

What kind of beads and accent pieces are you using?

Oooooh, thanks for the link!!

The rosary idea has changed a little bit. I've been doing some more research into accessories worn in the 16th century and girdle belts keep coming up. So I looked at some pictures of those.

I may be out of my head but I have to at least try it. As for what materials to use, I havn't the foggiest. Once we get fabric selection taken care of, then I can start looking to see what I can use for this.

Yes you are crazy. You should be able to find the beads for that pretty easily:

Pearl cross focal component, peach, approximately 31x23m. Sold individually. - Fire Mountain Gems and Beads

Pearl, cultured freshwater (B), white, 6-6.5mm round. Sold per 16-inch strand. - Fire Mountain Gems and Beads

Bead, 18Kt gold, 3mm round. Sold per pkg of 4. - Fire Mountain Gems and Beads

Not exactly alike but close enough for ren faire.

Gonna be expensive. Also since its pearls you will have to use silk thread.

Ooooh! Thank you!!

I havn't decided if I am going to go complete pearls just yet. I have an arsenal of pearls at my disposal so if I do go that route, I can soften the blow by at least half (which is good!).

I mainly like the design of the belt.

Doing gems and metal at the waist, where it will get alot of wear would probably be wiser to help the longevity of the belt, I would think?

Then leave the strand for the pearls and the ornate crucifix.

Thoughts?

Well I think pearls are lighter than rocks and I think silk is lighter than metal. Depending on the size of the waist, that is a LOT of rocks and metal.

It'll be for my waist so we are talking about something the size for Shamu. LOL

Seriously, You do have a very valid point. I will have to look around and see what I can come up with that won't break my wallet or my waist.

ok if you don't care what it is *actually* made of....

then you could get away with tin and plastic 'stones' -- which are a lot lighter than the real thing -- both on the pocketbook and on the waist.
