My Mood: | Newbie Clothes Making: Where Do I Go? What Do I Need? I just realized that I should have posted my original question here, instead of the business forum. Anyways I have the question posted under the same title in the ' Business, Land and Economy ' section. Thanks Last edited by Quiplash; 01-08-2008 at 10:46 AM. |

| 1. Photoshop (or GIMP or Paint Shop Pro). Most tutorials are designed around Photoshop so if you have that, start there. A friend of mine designs SL clothes in GIMP and it's free. I've never used it so have no idea how it works. 2. Some starter templates. See http://robinwood.com for a good t-shirt template and lots of interesting stuff about SL clothing design. 3. The freebie SL Clothing Previewer. http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/10...9/slcp_win.zip This will save you lots of $L in uploads since you can tell how stuff will look and make sure seams match. 4. Either Chip Midnight's or Robin Wood's avatar UV maps. You need those to locate seams and cross clothing boundaries. Good luck. |

My Mood: SL Join Date: 27 Sept 2006 | A bit more - basically adding to what's said here already. I use Photoshop for making clothes textures and outfit shapes. Often I make an initial fabric pattern in Paint! and then enhance it in Photoshop. You need to know how to make transparency using alpha channels to make Targa files to upload to SL. Sounds complicated, but fairly simple once you've learned to follow strictly the set procedure. There's a lot of tutorial info on the official SL forum - I think under 'textures'. Transparency is important if you want to make garments that have more intricate shapes than can be achieved just using the in-world sliders. I use the CMFF templates creating when the clothing textures. They are free downloads, so if you damage one by saving wrongly, you can always get another! The templates have lots of layers with different giudes on - when you come to save your texture, you need to turn off (i.e. make invisible) all the guide layers, just leaving your actual texture (the Ps process I use requires one to add a blank transparent layer too, but there are various methods). It's best to try out textures on the Beta Grid, because uploading is effectively free. It still costs L$10 per time, but you always have lots of L$ although they are not 'real' in that they can't be exchanged for RL currency like on main grid.

Then you don't have to worry about the beta grid going down for hours, days or weeks (as has happened many times in the past). Hell, you can even carry on working in OpenSim if you home internet connection goes down.

yep and it is a HUGE time saver as the uploads are as close to instant as you can get. When I modded Eloh's skin to that freebie Zombie one I made I did the whole thing on my standalone. I am 99.9% sure Quip has it installed already but for others reading you can get the quick windows install version here: http://forge.opensimulator.org/gf/do...imSetup0.6.exe Other install versions: Download - OpenSim

| Apart from making alpha transparancy (tga files) you can also make png files. NCI teaches free classes on clothes making. Look for the class called Clothing - Graphics Templates. I teach it on Saturdays 6.30 AM, but there are others teaching it at other times. The schedule is here: http://nci-sl.org/education/Schedule.pdf |
