Gah! Getting started!

Ok..so I've read as much as I possibly can. I've sat through a class. I've been to the Ivory Tower now.

I've rezzed prims, and fiddled with sliders, and cuts, and twists.

I've downloaded qavimator, gimp, wings3d, and even DAZ Studio, and Blender.

I'm a software developer. I've looked at LSL, and grok it.

And I can't think of a single thing to build! At least I can't think of a single thing to build with my artistic talent, which is on par with a sea sponge.

Does anyone here have any suggestions for 'getting-your-feet-wet' type projects? Really...I'm drawing a blank here. HELP!

Ahem. A great place to start is with a small plot of land that you terraform for a house of your own making. Then add furniture and landscaping items, like benches and winding paths, maybe a fountain.

If you find that you really don't enjoy doing that, then just delete them all and go party.

I've obviously watched too many cheesy horror flicks in my life, because I want Jerboa's avatar to be a marsupial werewolf.

Make a jerboa!

Possible script-type starter projects. These are all simple and you might be able to find the scripts out there, but for the sake of learning...
1. Non-physical elevator.
2. (if you are versed in control systems) physical elevator
3. Wall that lets you through but no one else.
4. Floor that opens and closes a hole when you touch it.
5. Avatar scanner

As for modeling
1. A hat
2. A high tech belt (like one I wear)
3. Boots
4. A headset
5. A robot avatar
6. A jerboa

Find a hole; when I got here there were only a few Linden plants available inworld. It became a mission to green the grid. Surely there are still some holes in the world that need filling.

Put those filthy minds back in their cages please

Above all, take your time. It's a whole new world to explore and experience and learn. Something will come to you and it'll take weeks or months to perfect your skills to the point of production. Unless you have money to flush down the toilet, don't commit yourself to tier costs until you've established a name and viable product line. It took me about eighteen months to reach that point.

And sometimes the holes find you.

Given my quasi-techie background (comfortable coding for ASP, .NET, C#), I assumed I would be a scripter in SL. Wrong! I ended up becoming frustrated with the narrow range of aesthetics for women, which started me down the path of gender-bending shapes and now skins for older women.

You never can tell just where you'll find a creative outlet in SL, so don't assume and leave yourself open to new experiences.

My first instinct is to suggest a table, which is a relatively easy piece of furniture to do. You'll practice building and texturing and -- if you're using sculpties -- modeling in your 3D program.

Of course, if you find tables hopelessly boring, this may not be the plan for you.

Thanks everyone.

Ok, now I have two doable project ideas.

Miriel's table. A sculpty tabletop, and regular legs. That way I can play with Wings3d a bit.

And in keeping with my avatar

a lasso

Thanks again, we'll see how this goes!

Just a follow up. Here is my first ever object. A basic table.
11 prims, no sculpties, and nothing fancy. But done!

Build a magic keyboard. A little keyboard that appears when you start typing, and vanishes when you stop. The best attachment point for this is probably either one of the "pecs" or the "Pelvis/stomach"

Requires:
  • Building
  • Texturing
  • Positioning Attachments
  • Scripting
    • Timer
    • llGetAgentInfo
    • llSetLinkAlpha

EVERY sandbox builder should build a cool chair. A chair is the A-number-1 best defense against 99% of all weapons in SL. If you're going to spend any serious amount of time in a sandbox, trying to build.. you need something to sit on. If you're going to be a builder, it should have some style.

Requires:
  • Building
  • Texturing
  • Scripting
  • Animation/Pose (optional)
    • llSitTarget
    • event: changed (for detecting sitting/unsitting)
    • llStartAnimation (if you wish to use a custom animation.. has other prerequisites)
      • llRequestPermissions
      • event: run_time_permissions

off to a good start next time in sl you get the urge to buy an object, or you just think it would be fun to have something, try your hand at creating it. and when you build, do so with the assumption that you'll just be throwing it away. that way if it doesn't turn out right you don't have to worry about it. after a while you'll be looking around in rl at things thinking about how you'd build them with prims.

Thanks Winter, and Parker.

After the table, I finally managed to do a lariat, for hanging on my belt. The rope textures are a bear to fiddle with though. It's not perfect yet, but as long as you don't zoom in too close it looks ok. Now to make it useable.
