So something that has been in the back of my head for a while was that it would be cool if we could make a transparent texture blur anything seen behind it, like frosted glass.

Well, when renderglow came out I tried a bunch of things but it didn't really "click" until today, I'd bet some people may have already stumbled across this but I think its pretty useful and worth mentioning.

Create a prim with a blank texture, set to 10% transparent, colored pitch black, and to about 0.9 glow. The resulting object should look like the attached image.

The darkened texture counteracts the bright glow effect, so even at only 10% transparent our piece of glass is very "transparent looking" and blurs everything behind it.

Of course it will still "glow" along the outer borders, or something in front of the piece of glass will have a bit of a glow-halo around it. You can lower the glow effect and make the texture color lighter to minimize this effect, at the expense of weakening the blur effect.

I've found this sort of thing quite interesting for photography. You could create a pseudo-depth of field effect in-world using this effect, avoiding having to post-process the DOF blur to some degree. And the soft glow can also look quite nice when you're taking snapshots. Just place a semi-transparent prim between you and the subject, basically. Also quite handy for giving a photo some soft tones (like sepia, for example), again without having to do it all via Photoshop.
