1920's Urban Clothing Creation Contest - 50,000L Prize

The sim many of you knew as City of Perdition has temporarily closed and is being recreated as a 1920's urban roleplay sim to be known as Shady Falls.

Our biggest challenge in opening an urban sim set in the 20's is to help roleplayers find the kind of quality mesh clothing they've come very quickly to demand. Our build is going up with modern SL techniques, and roleplayers want their clothing to match those high standards.

In order to address the shortage of "modern" vintage clothing in Second Life, Shady Falls is hosting a "1920's Outfit Contest" with a 50,000Linden prize. To enter, all you have to do is create a new 20's outfit (it can be for sale in your stores or at Vintage Fair right away) and post a photo of it to our Flickr Group at: Flickr: Shady Falls [Secondlife Roleplay] . You are welcome to include URLs or SLURS in your entry. We want to help you sell clothing - it helps us sell a new type of roleplay to those accustomed to modern.

The contest runs from now until August 30th and anyone is invited to participate, provided the outfit is original and their own creation. This is not a photo contest, but a clothing design contest - though a nice looking photo can't hurt.

In addition, even for those who don't win, we are happy to provide free advertising in the form of inclusion in our sim notecards with LMs and possibly even a single prim vendor at no cost for those designers who submit great entries. Our only goal is to encourage development of period clothing so that our players have a lot to choose from. For details, please contact Jon Vetinari in world - or just go ahead and upload your new creations to Flickr.

Bumping this. We've had a few excellent entries so far. Just 17 days left to enter.

Again, no cost to enter and our entries will be judged by our sim roleplay group (open voting - over 400 members (though no clue how many will cast a vote))

The group is at: Flickr: Shady Falls [Secondlife Roleplay]

I wish you a lot of luck and hope you get many entries.

Finding period or genre specific clothing is always a difficulty in roleplay sims, especially for men. There are some good, current items but they tend to be swooped on by everyone and it's hard to individualize.

Excellent foresight in doing this.

This is great, I hope you gets loads of great entries!
Is there a limit on how many items a given designer can submit?

I've learned never to assume, so I'll just go ahead and ask a couple of stupid comments:

> If your purpose is to spur new creations, shouldn't you specify that it has to be a NEW outfit, not currently on sale? Otherwise, you know, a store like Donna Flora may win through sheer volume

> Women can find things for this era in SL, but there are SO few decent men's outfits available.

To answer questions thus far:

1) No limit, as long as the outfits are new and your own work. We want to encourage people to make as much 20's clothing as possible, so it would work against ourselves to put a limit on entries.

2) Yes, they must be new outfits! Frankly, with the quality mesh work being done these days, it would be hard for one of the older designs to win. There is an associated notecard going out from our billboard at the Vintage Fair in world that specifies new designs only, but I think you have a point that the poster should be updated.

3) I am personally hoping for a lot of men's outfits. Vintage suits are great and so is the working-man's suspender look. Either would probably sell to "modern" SLers as well as the vintage crowd.

The sim will be ready to preview very soon. We have a couple insanely talented builders working around the clock. Among the highlights will be a mesh hotel based on the real-life Emily Morgan, immigrant-centric neighborhoods and a twisty, winding Chinatown that's a mix of original work and a few of the most amazing prefabs I've run into in SL.

4) One more point. If anyone is making quality vintage accessories, vehicles or even weaponry, we'd be happy to advertise your work. Just shoot me a notecard in-world.

I wish I knew how to make mesh, so I could compete. Seems making things with system layers and sculpts doesn't stand much of a chance.

I'll try anyway. It's time I made more menswear from the 20s.

Nothing says mesh has to win. And even if you don't win, you'll get a lot of happy men buying your clothing. I'm dying for a hat like this:

I've submitted a design to the contest, and it appears I have the only male design in the lot.

Anyway, I've been meaning to make some stuff from that era for a while now, so thanks for the kick in the butt.

I am sure Die Frauen und Der Herren from 1920's Berlin would be constant shoppers as well. There seems to be a lot of 1920's vintage roleplay going around

I visited Berlin today and I'm about a head taller than their recommended avatar height, so I figured I would just be an overly tall Knickerbocker there as I took my pictures.

More really nice hats would be good - and so would more suits. And I'd love to see more trousers with a proper waistband. And...

What, you don't like low rise slacks that show off four inches of crack?

I always thought Mr. Humphreys from Are You Being Served was a really nice example of a vintage suit.

1920's Berlin is well known, but folks who design for this era may want to consider an outlet in New Toulouse, 6 sims of early 20th century Louisiana.

Their yearly "Hurricane" is coming up next week or so, very fun, the streets flood and a lot of folks come through to see it. MUST HAVE BOATING OUTFIT .... DAMMIT ....

Vintage Fair - Starchild has a men's gift that includes a mesh suit and fedora. No mod, but it is free.

Excellent contest!
I hope you pick something authentic, so many people seem to think that 1920s style clothes means just gangsters and flappers in miniskirts.
As a historical consultant on tv shows, movies and for museums regarding daily life in this era, it is somethings a bit hair raising to see what is being sold in SL as 1920s.

I love the more common clothes, what real working class people wore.
We don't all want to look like moviestars.
Took me AGES to find a simple outfit that I liked.

I'll send your contest to some of our creators, although I'm not sure any of them have had time to create Mesh clothes yet, they are the best vintage fashion designers I know.

Why not post some clothes you like, that you think are needed? Also, I did find some nice laborer clothes, I'll post pics and link when I find them again.

EDIT: creator of the laborer clothes is Katri Kaligawa, with a marketplace link at https://marketplace.secondlife.com/stores/72950

EDIT: Also Nix Sands, although most people in that period of roleplay know about him already.

I managed a Petite version of that knickerbocker outfit. If I have time (doubt I will because of stuff), I will make something a little more formal and suitish.
