Cloud Party | Facebook

I saw people post pictures on Flickr so I gave it a try. It's kind of like SL, but on Facebook... yes, you need a Facebook account. So that's probably an instant turn off for a lot of people.

Having said that, it loads really fast. You can build with primitives and upload mesh, and it has physics. From what I have seen so far it's rather polished for a Beta.

Anyone else give it a try yet?

Oh, and it looks like New World Notes already posted something about it.

It has some promise... but the Bug Report is bugged!!
I also miss being able to fly.

It would have a lot of promise if it wasn't tied so tightly to Facebook.
That'll be it's downfall, unless they separate it out into it's own thing.
I can't even log in as Kick since FB won't allow avatar profiles and they MUST BE RL.

Over on NWN, Ezra posted a link (http://its.cloudpartytime.com) where you can try it out outside of FB.
You can log in anonymously, but that limits what you can do (like not being able to enter build mode).
Arrow keys worked for moving too, instead of just click-move, but I would kill for "strafe" movement!

I love the right click teleport function. I also cloned myself by accidentally opening the same game in two tabs, so I had two avatars in the same room, able to interact with each other.

And there a 5 skin tone options currently.
From "white" to "black" and a possible "Asian" in the middle... with the other 2 steps of "maybe you identify with these colors" thrown in for good measure.

Although, since it's a beta product, I suspect they'll expand those options before it's out of beta.
(Although, if it's taking all these other cues from SL, I'm not sure it will ever leave beta! )

SL is still king and Cloud Party won't be taking over any time soon.
At least not long term.
They may get their own "2007", but it won't be lasting... at least not if they stay integrated with Facebook.

Facebook is past it's prime and is simply waiting for the next big thing to knock it off it's pedestal.
It's not like SL where there's a TON of stuff to get down just right, even for simple basics of the world.
FB is a 2D website with apps and pictures and chat... not hard to usurp.
(Give me the people and money and I could topple Facebook by the end of next year.)

While I'm amused/laughing/hyper with you... that's the second person to offer patronage if I could seriously put my ideas into action.
To me, that's a start!
(I just don't have the servers or programming knowledge, I'm more an idea/concept/design guy.)

Also... every time I see your name, I think "Prim" instead of "Polygon" and I'm all "Hey! It's one o' them Prim People!"
Then I'm like, "No it isn't... but who knows?!? :dramatichamster:"

To be fair, I have a damned frustrating time with skin tones in practically every game I try. The choices seem to break down to:
  • WHITE - like a 40 watt lightbulb
  • YELLOW - like a victim of jaundice
  • ORANGE - a lifetime diet of nothing but carrots
  • RED - like radiation burn victim before the swelling and blisters
  • BROWN - as if the face had a thick layer of dust on it
  • BLACK - same as brown but with less light.

Regardless they all just look awful. It's sad that skin is so damned hard to do nicely.

I don't know...
I tend to find there's a good choice of skin colors in many games these days.
Of course, that could be because I tend to play superhero and scifi/fantasy MMOs.

If they have issues with skin, maybe Cory should look into the SL community.
There are some amazing skin makers out there!

Y'know... I just started wondering, how easy might it be for SL and CP to be inter-operable?
o.O

Looks fun so far! Except I'm not very keen on the FB integration. If they plan on having a user-driven economy similar to SL, I hope they will offer some kind of merchant account that is not directly tied to an RL identity. The last thing I need is for people to track me down in RL because their virtual stuff doesn't fit.

It's also weirdly reminescent of SL - after completing two tutorials I was offered a starter house, and here's the neighbor - yes that is a sad attempt at a privacy screen, with the original starter house hidden behind.

Also, DAE uploads work - though I was unable to find my uploaded items in inventory last night so I didn't try rezzing them. Looks they land somewhere in the "Build > Browse" thingy but there doesn't seem to be a filter on "my own stuff" so I only found one of two items and deleted it immediately, not knowing what the exact permissions and accessibility is for the Browse thingy.

It doesn't look to be all that tightly integrated with Facebook, there is already a standalone entry point that allows anonymous connections. They could open it up to other login sources, maybe even their own, later, like some other startups have been doing.

My first impression is good and a nice step by step tutorial to get you started with your first build and home.

Take note LL.

This actually is very good. Getting around and building with prims is quite quick and easy, and although more basic that seems to give it some of it's charm.

The UI (my own interest) is really nicely done (well at at least 8 out of 10). All the controls are hidden nicely in a 'cellphone', though there are direct keyboard links. It all seems to hang together nicely. Only bugbear is the unresizable chat area that is too big on most screens. But taken as a whole is an excellent example to LL of how to make a simple, unobtrusive UI.

Also LL could learn from the startup tutorials that really led you into the basic functions while not feeling boring.

Good to see LL has some competition on the way. Am now looking forward to their reply - hopefully we won't have to wait too long.

Saw a comment on Hamlet's blog saying the devs want to spend time getting things working nicely before opening up to other logins but that they may eventually, i'll have a look if they do open it up to others, Facebook only login doesn't appeal to me at all.

I found the tutorials to be slightly annoying, as there was no way to just skip a task (so I had to tp back to the newbie sandbox to find an interacteable object) but other than that, it was very nicely done indeed. And I liked how at the end of the second tutorial, it offers you a free house.

And I agree, the smartphone / apps analogy works as a very natural metaphor.

I am not a fan of point-to-goto or "run towards cursor" style movement control. Give me WASD or I'm just controlling a game character. Barely.
