My Mood: | But... you can buy more islands for less money! How is that a bad thing for an estate owner?

Whilst I do agree that there is too much mainland I think people should understand the phenomenal growth in private estates since mid March - During that period LL added 646 Mainland regions (14% growth) - The net growth in Estates over the same period was 8050 (a 60% increase).

I disagreed with them, as did a couple of others.

My Mood: | So this is the best TV show on SL then? Last night there was some person who spoke broken english demanding an answer about what LL will do about people who copy content. I don't think they understood they're supposed to file a DMCA, or were too lazy to do it themselves. |

I'm sure there will be a slow down in growth at some point - I can't see it being sustainable with the current player base not significantly increasing * . Of course this is assuming that a good proportion of estates are bought for renting out to others - plenty are bought for peoples own enjoyments/private estates as well by successful businesses to host their own stores . Most of the increase has come since the Land Store opened fully at the beginning of May so its only about 10 to 11 weeks since then - If there is any bubble bursting I'd guess we'd begin to see it in the next few weeks as the 2nd and 3rd month of tier is due on purchases made round that time . I'll keep an eye out for significant changes in the rate of sims appearing /disappearing . My methods are totally super ultra ninja seekret (and there are pirates involved as well !) ... I use a modified libsl based client to survey the grid on a daily basis and just keep track of changes .EDIT: I will say that the good landlords (and those with the specially themed estates - who are often the same ) will survive - I think a large proportion of the increase has been opportunist new land barons taking advantage of the barriers to entry being lowered (both in tier and the rollout of openspaces) - Many of these will fall by the way in the next few months Last edited by Tyche Shepherd; 07-19-2008 at 12:53 PM.

| Yeah I do not think we are at a plateau by any means. Thats the problem. The smart move was for the lindens to make maintaining a sim more likley, I would have loved instead of dropping the sim purchase to 1000.00 to see the monthly drop by 50.00. Natually, you will have slower sim additions BUT higher retention of those that do come in. A more stable economy can develop around it. Yes there are some people that arent looking to make any money off their sim and get it for the sheer enjoyment. However, the mass amount of people either do it for profit or at a minimum to have a sim that partially pays for itself. Anyway, plateau no but with the surge of sims since the lowering of the cost to 1000.00 we are seeing the classic bubble form. Not sure when its gonna happen but sooner or later the land bubble is gonna burst as more and more people cannot cover their sims as the paying people get more and more spread out. There will be a folding of a lot of sims. SL will take another bloody nose which it will more then likely survive then the survivors of the sim crash will emerge and there will be an economic balance for awhile as even though people can afford sims they will be gunshy after the bloodbath. What SL needs to worry about is these opengrid projects. None are on par with SL YET but they are working on it hard. In fact, Microsoft has been fishing around realextend and one of the open grids, looking to merge their live technology. Then there is Google Live. Depending on when the bubble bursts or how long confidence in SL is shot then these alternatives could be what really ends up hurting SL and you see a major downturn. Unless soemthign completely crazy happens, SL will not get killed by it but they are likely to not be the giant of the virtual worlds they are now. |

Most people who want a Full sim will go buy an Estate sim, instead of worrying about mainland. And I have seen a few full mainland sims up for sale. They are out there.

My Mood: | When you consider what mainland USED to sell for, you could have purchased a private island and paid tier on it a full year or more before breaking even on the equivalent mainland purchase. It is no wonder then that the only people who ever bought mainland sims were typically land traders or developers, and not the casual "I want my own sim" folks. But even then, many people want the water that surrounds an island, and buying a landlocked mainland sim isn't going to cut it. |
