Once again, does LL have a plan, clue whatever? Mainland Supply on hold

Mainland supply on hold until July « Official Second Life Blog

The average price per meter is the key metric we observe to decide levels of mainland supply. It takes account of all resident-to-resident sales per day, but excludes a number of data items such as zero value sales (when friends swap land around), Governor Linden sales (including Auctions themselves) and all private estate sales.

We also measure sales by groups and those by individuals separately although at the moment the average price for both is similar (group sales being as much as L$1 per meter lower on average).

It will be no secret to those that have bought or sold land recently, that the average price of mainland has been falling. In 2007 we managed the price down slowly from a high figure of L$12 per meter to a more reasonable L$6 to L$8. It then rose a little as we reached March of this year before falling consistently since then. In recent days we have seen it dip below L$6 per meter which we feel is a little low.

There are a number of factors behind this recent drop, not least the large number of Openspace regions sold through the new Land Store and the changes in island pricing. Of course the supply of new Mainland at auction is another factor.

At Linden Lab, we respect the investments you make in Second Life land and are sensitive to price fluctuations related to our auctions of new land. To allow the market to absorb the land recently added to the grid, we will be suspending whole region auctions for the next four weeks after which we will review the situation again (on or around the 11th July).

We will, however, be continuing to recycle the smaller abandoned parcels via the auctions, and you may see more of those plots becoming available than usual. As the next few weeks go by we will continue to keep you informed via the blog.

Comments are interesting, as you might expect.

This is the one that gets me. I know he means well, but I don't think he understands how much were fucked when they flood/hold like this. It should be a slow steady flow to regulate at a normal pace. Not crash and then gas price style rise.

Selfishly what I personally wish they would do is make the middle levels of tier cheaper. This would enable someone to buy the view in a large mainland plot, and the extra prims would be useful. When I owned land I set myself a hard personal limit of 25 a month in tier, and if the neighbors are not fugly that is plenty, but it's not really enough to get away from them.

Yeah, I was stopped at a 1/8 of a sim, US$40/mo tier. The next jump was to $US75, and that was just too much. I would have happily tier up to US$50-55 for some extra prims and more breathing room, but instead they lost that extra money.

FYI, a solution to get around that problem is to use a group to hold your land with an alt. You also get the added benefit of a 10% bonus amount of land, which makes a difference at higher levels.

As the next few weeks go by we will continue to keep you informed via the blog.

LL's idea of keeping us informed means, "One day we will dump alot of land, enough land so anyone who owns land will lose alot of money. And one day when we think it is the right time, we will completely stop releasing land all together."

They never ease into anything. It's either all or nothing with them. I'm so fed up with them stating that they care about our investments or what we do in sl. It's no wonder I feel so schizo about secondlife, one day I love it and on another day, I feel like throwing my laptop in to LL's ass.

Hate them or love them, I'm still here in SL. Did I make any sense?

It helped me tremendously to just plainly accept the fact that employees of Linden Lab don't give a rat's ass about me, my investment, my contributions, my ideas, or my concerns. I can handle people lying to my face if I know that's who they are, that they're thoroughly deluded, and simply can't help themselves.

I think the number of openspace sims that are being sold is much higher then they thought. This is really depressing the mainland prices right now.

I know exactly what you mean. I found two 4096s side by side in a flat beach area with a full sim of protected water in front. However, I only had 2560 breathing space within my $40 tier. I sold off a ton of snow land at a sizeable loss and deeded the land I share with my partner over to her to make it possible - and she had to sell off a parcel of her own to make that possible. Even that wasn't enough - I had to take ownership of 32sqm of her very-first-ever parcel of land (which is "sacred ground" to us because that's where we first met) to keep her from bumping up into the next tier level.

It would have been so much easier just to pay another 10 or 15 dollars.

Smile use an alt for added tier

Just create an alt and pay premium ...You get the extra 512 or 563 at Group bonus and the weekly Stipend to help offset the Premium fees. I have used that several times when inbetween Tier Levels...Especially 1/2 Sim Jumps
You can even drop the alt in and out of Premium to Basic when not needed anymore LOL
