Graphic Novels

Comics, BDs, Mangas - Do you enjoy them?

I admit, I'm more into the hardcover BDs. I know nothing about mangas, and I've never read any superhero type comics, but it would be nice to get some suggestions in styles I'm not used to. The libraries here have aisles full of all types, so I'm looking for new authors/artists.

What have you read lately (or not) that has blown you away?

I read a variety of DC, Marvel, Vertigo, Dark Horse, and Indie stuff. At the moment, I'm enjoying Saga by Brian K. Vaughn (author of Y The Last Man, Ex Machina, Runaways, etc.) a trippy, fun, fast-paced, satirical sci-fi story; and Mind MGMT, by Matt Kindt, a very clever, yet creepy psychological story. Volume 1 of Saga is collected already, and Mind MGMT is an ongoing series.

I'm reading Y The Last Man right now! The first 2 this week-end in French because they didn't have the original, so I've ordered the next two in English. I've been trying to read more English/American authors.

That's crazeh...

BDs: I like the fantasy ones. Lanfeust, Ythaq, Les Druides, ...

I also love American style comics, but not so much the default Marvel/DC mass market crap.
Sorry for not giving an explanation with all the good series I've been reading in 2012, because it's just too many:

Transmetropolitan, Fables, Northlanders, Y The Last Man, Preacher, The Boys, Chew, The Walking Dead, Irredeemable, Punk Rock Jesus, Harbinger, Sandman, Watchmen, Morning Glories, Chronicles of Wormwood, Star Wars Legacy, Saga

If you like the fun sci-fi/serious social commentary of Y the Last Man, you may like Ex Machina as well. It's a story about an engineer from New York who touches a strange substance under the Brooklyn Bridge and finds that he now has the power to talk to machines. He has a brief career as a superhero which ends after he literally talks down one of the hijacked airliners on 9/11. He then decides he will do more good as a political leader and gets elected as the Mayor of New York (replacing Bloomberg). There's a lot of fun political stuff and a deep conspiracy plot relating to the strange glowing thing under the bridge.

Really fun read.

It's a fun series. Also, the ending is the most terrifying thing I've read in a while.

Johnathan Hickman also does incredible near-future, transhumanist comics with a political spin. My favorite of his is Pax Romana, a story about the Catholic Church sending back a group of mercenaries and operatives to prevent the fall of the Roman Empire, to prevent the Dark Ages, and to prevent the Catholic Church from losing power.

I'm slightly embarrassed to say that I 'discovered' Warren Ellis through Freak Angels. That's why I'm reading Y at the moment...

And speaking of stuff from the Big Two, I would definitely recommend Dial H for Hero. It's written by China Mieville, the novelist, and it's ridiculously fun. If you like Sandman or Grant Morrison's Animal Man, you should definitely pick it up in floppies or trades.

Going to be honest, I like Warren Ellis, but his recent stuff has been pretty one-note. His older stuff is golden, though.

No, this is great.

My usual stuff is more cartooney, or about everyday life, or even simply focused on the art (think Shaun Tan's The Arrival). It's also mostly from Francophone authors. Much not even translated so I don't bother giving any of you suggestions, but there is so much stuff out there, it's sometimes hard to know where to start when you feel like switching genres. Anyhoo... I'm taking notes.

Actually, I am reading Noah (Darren Aronofsky) at the moment which of course comes in English and is being made into a film.

The last comic series I read completely, recently was Spiderman Loves Mary Jane.

Its fantastic and I am irritated that there isn't more. Also I love the art style.

There is a ton of good French stuff, some of which is only available through fan-translations. My current favorite is Blacksad. And I have a lot of Moebius on my hard drive I need to get through.

Have you read Palmiotti/Amanda Conner's Power Girl run? It's a really fun story with gorgeous art and you don't need to know anything to start.

Good God! Are you in my house? I'm reading this, too. Although, for some reason, I thought it was in English originally - probably because it is set in the US.

So I've logued in the public library site and I'm going to reserve a bunch of these.

If you like Sandman, check out Books of Magic, Alan Moore's Swamp Thing, Shade the Changing Man (by Peter Miligan), Hellblazer (by Garth Ennis), and any other 80's/early 90's Vertigo stuff that looks interesting. They all have that mix of magic, horror, and metatextual commentary. Also, if you want disturbing psychological analysis and/or like Batman, pick up Arkham Asylum: A Serious Home on Serious Earth.

I think I've never picked up any manga, even though it's readily available for me, because I have the (false?) impression it's about children. Young literature can be fun and interesting for adults, but when a story is told in a visual way, it can be a little off puting, at least for me, when all the main characters are little kids. I do know the themes are adult for the most part, but I wouldn't know where to begin...

Mangas come in many many genres, so only a subset of them have kids as main characters.
