I just finished Alexander McCall Smith's The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, which was decent -- some lovely descriptions, but the episodic style didn't quite work for me. I expected a cosy mystery, and instead got a series of slices of life.

Currently reading: The Steampunk Megapack: 26 Modern and Classic Steampunk Stories. They're not kidding about the "Megapack" aspect; some of the short stories are novella-sized (I'm looking at you, Lovecraft). Just started HERBERT WEST: REANIMATOR, by H. P. Lovecraft, which I don't like as much as the other Lovecraft story in there (THE WHISPERER IN DARKNESS -- spooky).

I liked SevenEves until the final third section. You could skip it if you really wanted to.

I took a detour from a detour to binge on a reread of 'Stranger in a Strange Land'.

Future Home of the Living God by Louise Erdrich

If you liked Handmaid's Tale and Children of Men, this may also interest you since the novel addresses similar issues. Some people have said that it was too similar to Atwood's work, but I just thought of it as a companion to that novel, taking place right before and in another State (Minnesota). The first part was a little long for me, I'm not a big fan of reading the rambling thoughts of a character - probably because all the rambling going on in my own head leaves no room. And although the 'evolution going backwards' part could have been interesting, it's mostly used as a metaphor. I found all the details about her baby growing inside her difficult, for personal reasons. I really enjoyed it, though, when the focus was more on interpersonal relationships, I simply chose to read it in little spurts instead of in one sitting.
Quote:
The world as we know it is ending. Evolution has reversed itself, affecting every living creature on earth. Science cannot stop the world from running backwards, as woman after woman gives birth to infants that appear to be primitive species of humans. Twenty-six-year-old Cedar Hawk Songmaker, adopted daughter of a pair of big-hearted, open-minded Minneapolis liberals, is as disturbed and uncertain as the rest of America around her. But for Cedar, this change is profound and deeply personal. She is four months pregnant.

Though she wants to tell the adoptive parents who raised her from infancy, Cedar first feels compelled to find her birth mother, Mary Potts, an Ojibwe living on the reservation, to understand both her and her baby’s origins. As Cedar goes back to her own biological beginnings, society around her begins to disintegrate, fueled by a swelling panic about the end of humanity.

There are rumors of martial law, of Congress confining pregnant women...
