Random thoughts (and pictures) as I wander North and West - and eventually home again.
Mile 418: Bedroom with Redtails!

I grabbed a couple of hours sleeping in a highway pullout.
So comfy and warm in my traveling cocoon. Its built of a thermal reflection layer, 4 inches of microfoam, then piles of blankets, 2 sheepskins, 4 pillows and two sleeping bags. I sleep diagonally, to stretch out fully... with the things I might want in the night stashed around me... book, keys, light, etc.
A redtail hawk, perched on a fencepost maybe 20 feet away, greeted me when I awoke. A good omen for my trip as I've always had a special fondness for redtails.

I've got a 2003 Mazda Tribute. At 5'8", I can comfortably sleep diagonally with the back seat down. That's at full stretch. Since I normally curl up a bit, it's quite comfy. It has a rear hatch window that opens independently of the hatch itself, so I can have a nice view and ventilation from the back.
Being able to camp in the car is the key to this being an affordable trip. If I had hotel on top of gas, it wouldn't be doable.Posted 04-23-2009 at 05:33 PM by Surreal

Bathroom is restaurants, rest stops, etc. Showers is the same as tent camping... every other day or so I will be hitting a state park or something like. Otherwise cat baths with wet wipes.
If the need arises, there are ways to stealth shower too. Visiting a state park with camping using a day pass and hitting the showers is one.Posted 04-24-2009 at 10:15 PM by Surreal
