AMD Pulls a Linden Lab with New Radeon.

In a most disturbing move that uses state of the art confusion inducing techniques that even Linden Lab would be proud of, AMD decides to mystify the new HD6800 series video card specifications. Full Story: http://thebotzone.net/2010/10/24/amd...th-new-radeon/

How is this disturbing? AMD's focus on this next generation has been power reduction. If you read the previous page on the article at Tom's Hardware it clearly indicates that they succeeded. It is the next generation of GPUs. AMD never claimed it would be faster but has said that they would lower the power consumption and the fan noise.

It is disturbing (and misleading) because of the naming convention being used.

When the hd4800 series was released, it was a major performance increase compared to the hd3800 series, when the hd5800 series was released, it was a major performance increase over the hd4800.

As Tom's Hardware points out (and is indicated by the title of the article), it is pretty much expected that the hd6800 series would have an increase in performance over the hd5800 series.

That is why Tom's Hardware dinged them for this misleading naming convention. The HD6800 series is a downgrade for any of the comparable hd5800 cards. In fact, I own a HD5850. I will most certainly be skipping over the hd6850 because it has slower benchmarks. Who cares about the power saving and noise when you are in the market for what normally would be a major performance upgrade. Now since the naming convention is skewed, we will just have to wait and see what the next series is named that we might want to upgrade to. Definately not the hd6800 series (less you are coming from the hd4800 series).

AMD Radeon HD 6870 And 6850: Is Barts A Step Forward? : The New Radeon HD 6000 Family

"Now, if you're like us, that Radeon HD 6800-series moniker will strike you as disingenuous. Even after hearing the official party line, we still don't like the fact that the branding requires an explanation from us in order to make sense. What about the folks who don't get the memo? We can only hope that price insinuates performance"

"I’m sure we aren’t the first to be surprised by the new naming scheme—to us, it’s a cinch that Barts should file in as the Radeon HD 6700-series. AMD claims that 6800 was chosen because the Radeon HD 5700s will remain in production for some time to cover the sub-$150 market. We honestly don’t think this is a very good justification, as product generations have overlapped time and time again without too much of a problem. The biggest issue for us is that the ill-informed Radeon HD 5870 owner will assume that the Radeon HD 6870 is an upgrade, when in fact the new card wields less performance."
