Numb and sick

Posted 07-26-2009 at 03:36 PM by Lewis Luminos

You know, normally I'm an optimist. I'm the guy that believes that every cloud has a silver lining somewhere, even if you have to hunt for it. But this whole thing about being banned is just something I can't see any silver lining in at all.

I've done some googling, and reading up about what other people have done when they've been banned, even when it was through no fault of their own, and it seems that it's almost unheard-of for Linden Lab to reinstate a banned account.

Their ToC says "We can ban you for any reason or no reason."

And here's why I don't think they will reinstate me.

Reinstating me is an admission that they were wrong. It's them saying "OK we screwed up." And that, potentially (if I was a content creator, or if I was rich) could open them up to a potential lawsuit.

They have, according to their terms and conditions, no obligation to even tell me why I'm banned. And that is just plain depressing.

I'm thinking that I will have to take a break from SLU and Plurk, at least until I can manage to read posts about SL without feeling sick about how much I've lost.

Wait until you talk to them. It's still possible this is something fixable.

I am new to SLU, I was reading through blogs and saw this. You got banned from SL with no reason given at all? Or did they give you a reason but didn't have all information? This is scary that they can ban anyone with no reason.

Crossing fingers and toes for you, Lewis

Fwiw I'm something of an optimist. My CC info has been blocked a couple of times (not as serious, I know, but it threatened to lose me my land the last time). I got on live chat and was told 'you need to contact Billing' - who didn't even acknowledge my ticket.

So in the end I got onto live chat again, and got somebody really helpful who noted what I told her, escalated it to Billing herself, and then followed it up. I think they'd flagged the fact that my account was accessed from some pretty weird bits of the world and (of course) blocked it rather than asking me why. The woman asked if I had any theories WHY this had happened: I said 'all I can think of is that I travel a lot for work and have bought Lindens from strange places'. And got 'aha'. She didn't confirm it, but I've not had any problems since.

Sure, I know you can't get onto live chat if you're blocked but maybe a calm phone call where you don't take 'no' for an answer and ask, if necessary, to talk to somebody higher than the person who initially answers? So, so much depends on who you are talking to.

    Hugs anyway!
