Have you seen the Linotype movie? There's one junkyard scene that just made me cringe.

It was still used at the newspaper where I got my first job, and computers were programmed with punched paper tape.

Wow, what memories. The tiny, tiny town where I grew up had a newspaper with a Linotype. I wrote the occasional "from the world of kids" article and then they'd let me watch it get typeset.

What a contraption, and what a miracle. Words went in, MY words, and printing came out. I was enchanted and instantly considered myself a Writer. I've been inflicting my verbiage on innocents ever since.

I've been trying to wrap my head around the reasoning for Linotype for years. The best I've come up with is the cleaning of old ink. Interchangeably inked characters would have to be cleaned after a little use. Dies to which lead slugs wouldn't stick did not have such a problem. And the slugs were quickly recycled in a casting machine for the next day.

The reasoning for Linotype is that it takes about 1/10th the time to set a line of type by keying bam bam bam ETAOIN SHRDLU... than by pulling individual letters out of a case and setting them up against each other Lorem ipsem dolor sit amet...

The whole business of lead slugs is because (a) a couple of grams of molten lead is way cheaper than a brass matrix that you ink directly, (b) you only need to have enough multiple copies of each matrix to make up a single line, not many many trays of set type, and (c) a line of type that's a single block of metal is lighter, easier to handle, and about ninety zillion times less likely to go "sproing" while you're carrying it than some Heath Robinson contraption of springs and retaining rods and clamps.

It used to be about how Linden Lab was worse than Hitler for obsoleting Phoenix, then something about private Phoenix builds, now something about typography.

Forget vodka, try acid.

Plus trying to find where you left the key for the spring boxes when you take it apart.

About ....

How people communicated before computers?

Linotype porn?

Using terminology/references only a few people here understand?

Never staying on topic?

/me tries to diagram the thread so far and fails completely

I'm surprised FT_LOAD_FORCE_AUTOHINT didn't work. Recompiling freetype 2.4.11 without its bytecode interpreter does work. And so does toggling autohinting when using the freetype demos on those fonts.

My Father was the editor of a local newspaper and for years he had some Linotype "blocks" kept in a glass frame on the wall of his home office, including the papers old mast head. We recently donated them to the local historical society. They could not fathom what they were or how they could have possibly worked. It was as if we have brought in some bizarre contraption from a steampunk novel.

The site for the linotype movie is selling slugs with their logo for $10. I am tempted to send one to my dad as a late present. We used hand setting rather than a linotype but he would recognize it as a letterpress block.

I was mistaken when I said I tried FT_LOAD_FORCE_AUTOHINT before. I checked again and that is actually the default used since 2011-03-23 with STORM-1090

I think they're trying to tell us one of the cross beams has gone out askew on the treadle.

They weren't expecting some sort of Spanish Inquisition!
