Why there's no worn tab in Catznip (and never will be)

One of our favourite things in Second Life is dress up; we spend a fair portion of our relaxation time (between shopping) putting outfits together. But it could be so much better and we want your help.

So far we have already put a fair amount of work into Catznip to enhance and smooth wearing of attachments, stacking up clothing layers and helping you organise your outfits better.

But this is about the lack of a ‘worn tab’ and how we want your help to work out alternatives.

If you’re feeling lost already, when I say worn tab, I’m referring to a tab on the inventory floater seen in most other TPV projects. It shows you an inventory based view of what your avatar is wearing. (See Picture)

This worn tab has been a pretty standard addition to other third party viewers and while it did get added to Snowglobe, it never went on to make the official Linden Lab viewer. The closest was a video tutorial from Torley about how you can just search for “(worn”, so clearly the Lab could see the need but didn’t much care for the proposed solution.

Neither do we.

From a technical perspective, this simple, almost trivial floater increases the amount of memory the viewer has to use for inventory. The worn tab holds an entire second copy of your inventory and is just filtered by what’s being worn. It makes opening a second inventory slower and if you’re really unlucky and have a huge inventory can even be the root cause of login issues.

But for us, that’s not even half of it.

The biggest problem is that at best this is a engineering solution; like eating soup with a fork, it works, but it doesn’t really work as well as a spoon might.

This is where we need your help, to better define the problem so we can build a spoon.

Just noooooouuuuuu! >.< , but LL coded the worn tab already! its just a XML panel you have to add >.<

im sure LL doesnt even know that they coded it! if someone opens a Jira they will most likely add this tab cuz it was already coded!

The two huge differences between a "worn" tab and typing "worn" in the inventory filter are:

1. a "worn tab" shows active gestures as well
2. a "worn tab" shows "worn blue jeans" only if you are.... wearing them.

line 507 to 521

the addition of this small chunk of XML lines brought me the Worn tab in Inventory without any code , the proof for this is that my Viewer was created from scratch based on Linden Code and it instantly worked when i merged my UI mods which included this XML addition

That's what the parenthesis is for

"(worn"

I put instructions for doing this in my Infoplasma Avatar instructions and web page years ago.

Catznip is the worst name for a client I've seen in 5 years. It sounds like a bad flash game for six year olds.

I don't really notice not having a worn tab in Catznip (which I use almost all the time). The Wearing tab in the Outfits floater does me perfectly well, and if it were possible to have "find original" on the context menu there, I wouldn't notice the lack at all.

Here's what I wrote in response to Torley's 2009 "(worn" post. I don't know if anything similar was ever developed as I haven't paid much attention to SL since I pulled out in 2009, and I've been wearing mostly the same two outfits since!

Quote:
I make this suggestion for people to find their hair and shape, among other things, before wearing my avatar, so they'll know where to find them when they want to revert to their previous appearance. It's little problems like this that make SL a challenge to learn.

SL really needs some dynamic links to inventory items, and an intuitive way to use them. I should, for example, be able to press a button to make an outfit out of everything I'm wearing, and give it a name. It wouldn't make copies; it'd simply set up a single item in my inventory (in, say, an "outfits" folder) that when worn will replace my outfit with all the inventory items that were worn when that outfit was created. No more copying inventory items into folders. No more being prevented from doing so by no-copy items.

There should also be a "revert to previous appearance" button; kinda like an undo.

Yep, my viewer does have a worn tab but I never use it because I don't like the items showing in folders, takes longer to find what I want. Or because I want to copy the outfit to clipboard and only the wearing tab on outfits will let me.

So by this same logic, if we get rid of the recent tab? Will it be even faster? I don't use the recent tab either.

The version of it on the Appearance floater suits me just fine; the TPV version that spits out the folders too just drives me nuts and i never use it.

Yes, subsequent inventory panels would load up quicker.

I don't really miss the worn tab when I'm using Catznip since I just type 'worn' and everything comes up without much delay and I can scroll, click on it, etc without the inventory jumping around like a crazy lunatic on shoe speed.

What would be helpful is if it filtered (maybe it does and I have no clue how to use it right) out anything NOT worn but labeled with the word 'worn' .... because that is a bit of a pain in the ass.

For me, that's where the actual worn tab comes in handy. If I'm in a hurry and need to see something quick (my inventory is a mess so even the folder isn't easy to find for me). Otherwise, I've always just typed out 'worn' in the search field an scrolled around for the actual highlighted items.

I like and use my worn tab when I am on viewers that have them, and do notice it's absense when I'm on Catznip. It's not a show stopper or anything, but I have gone to look for it more than a few times before realizing it wasn't there.

I understand (ok, sort of) the technical reasons for not having one so I'm trying to pin point what it is I like/want/need a worn tab for. I know the wearing in outfits is similar, but for some reason I have a preferance for it being in my inventory.

I'll need to think on this some more, because honestly so far the only good answer I can come up with for wanting a worn tab is "Because I want it" That is clearly not very helpful LOL!

If a Worn tab on inventory pointed to the Appearance panel's "Wearing," would that cover the gap for you? Assuming that's even possible, I mean.

At this point it's just second nature to run to "Wearing" to quickly take things off. Digging through directories (Worn tab) to find one thing is a royal pain in the kiester, and "Show Original" takes me right to the folder its in anyway.

That might be all it takes yes, would certainly help.

I'm looking at the screen shot of the worn tab, and I think what I've always liked about it is actually what Orc dislikes about it. The folder and structure. When I need to see where in my inventory an item is filed and the folder name which can differ and be more descriptive than the item name itself.

Having said that, it's certainly not a deal breaker, especially if it affects performance. I've adapted and will continue to.

I'm guessing my preferance for it is because I've got the crutch of having it on other viewers so I haven't fully embraced the wearing tab yet.

"Show Original" context menu in Wearing will actually open up an inventory folder and take you right to the item's folder. I have to agree with a previous suggestion that adding "Show Original" context menu to the Appearance panel would also be a great help.

That's understandable. When V2 came out I dropped all and went to it, and there was no Worn. Then I went to Catznip back around what, 2.2ish? Still no Worn. And that's pretty much all she wrote. Any viewer that has a Worn I've glanced at and never used cause it's a mess. I nest folders like batshit crazy, so finding things in it takes forever. So, it's reasonable to say that if I had it from the beginning it's possible I might rely on it as well.

Come on, you have to admit, adding random z's or x's to things makes them at least 30% cooler.

~InzWorldz Virzual Livez Xtreamez!~

ETA: Catznip is a fine viewer and everyone should try it at some point at least twice.

The name was picked by Kitty way way back when. Any proximity to cool, actual or imagined is entirely accidental, she lives under a mighty big rock.
